Sterling's father, "Coo Coo" Marlin, was injured in the race the previous week and broke his shoulder. He could not make it to the race, so he decided to let young Sterling drive at the Nashville Speedway in his car. Sterling was only 18 years old. He had worked as a crew member on his father's race team before his debut race. From then on, his racing career was started.
