Felix Potvin was born in Anjou, Quebec. He played most of his junior hockey for the Chicoutimi Sagueeneens of the QMJHL, before being drafted into the NHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs saw the untapped potential of the goaltender, and decided to draft him in a considerably early round to see if his potential was really what they believed it to be. In his first season (1991-92), Felix recorded an 0-2-1 record with a 0.933% save percent and a 2.29 goals against average.

He played a further seven seasons with the Leafs, compiling a 160-149-49 record with 12 shutouts.

The first penalty shot Potvin faced was on October 22, 1992. It was against Brian Bradley of the of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He stopped it with ease. The final regular season penalty shot he faced was on October 7, 2001. The shooter was Sebastien Bordeleau of the Minnesota Wild. It remained the only regular season penalty shot which he conceded.
