Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is the only penalty in which a player who is found guilty of it, is automatically given a match penalty?

Answer: Slew-footing

Rule 52. "Slew-footing is the act of a player or goalkeeper using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent's feet from under him, or pushes an opponent's upper body backward with an arm or elbow, and at the same time with a forward motion of his leg, knocks or kicks the opponent's feet from under him, causing him to fall violently to the ice."
2. If a team complains that a player, about to take a penalty shot has a stick with verified illegal length, how many chances does the player get to take his stick back and replace it with a legal stick?

Answer: One

Rule 10.6. "If the [first] stick is "illegal" the player will be assessed a minor penalty. He will be ordered to obtain a new (second) stick prior to the penalty shot. After he takes the shot he will be required to serve his penalty. If second stick is "illegal", disallow the opportunity for the penalty shot and assess one minor penalty for the first illegal stick." So if the shooter if found to have an illegal stick, he gets a minor penalty, which he serves following the shot, gets another stick, and has it checked. If the second one is illegal, then he must serve the penalty without the chance to take the penalty shot.
3. Of the 87 Official Rules contained in the 2008-09 edition, which of the Rules is no longer in effect?

Answer: Rule 24

Rule 24 regards to the classification of "gross misconduct," which is now classified as "game misconduct." Rule 15 regards calling penalties, Rule 40 tells of situations with abuse of officials, and Rule 83 clarifies offside.
4. If an unusual delay occurs, what is the maximum amount of time left allowed in which the referee may order the next intermission to begin immediately without any outside permissions?

Answer: 5 minutes

Rule 77.3. Basically, with less than 5 minutes, the referee may call intermission. Any more time left, and he may only do so with the home team's permission.
5. What is the lightest penalty a player can get for butt-ending?

Answer: Double-minor

Rule 58. "The action whereby a player or goalkeeper uses the shaft of the stick, above the upper hand, to check an opposing player in any manner or jabs or attempts to jab an opposing player with this part of the stick. A double-minor penalty will be imposed on a player or goalkeeper who attempts to butt-end an opponent." The double-minor is given to anyone who attempts to butt-end, major to anyone who does, and higher penalties for injuring an opponent as a result of butt-ending. Minors cannot be given for an attempted butt-end.
6. Team A and Team B are playing. In the second period, Team B leads 4-2, but due to non-compliance with the rules, they forfeit. What will the score be recorded as in favor of Team A because of the forfeit?

Answer: 1-0

Rule 66. "If the game was in progress at the time it is declared forfeited, the score shall be recorded as zero for the loser and 1, or such greater number of goals that had been scored by it, for the winner..." Since Team A was not ahead, then they win 1-0. If they were ahead by multiple goals, then A's score would have been the difference at the time the forfeit was called, and B's would be 0.
7. What is the signal for tripping?

Answer: Hitting the leg with either hand below the knee with both skates on the ice

Rule 30.31. Hitting behind the knee is clipping, side-sweeping is washout, and hitting the knee is kneeing. Remember, the key to those signals is to keep both skates on the ice.
8. Which of the following is not a case in which a goal would be disallowed?

Answer: When the puck is hit and deflected off another player's skate

Rule 78.5. It is legal for the puck to deflect off of a skate and go in. If it happens, then whoever the puck bounced off of would be credited with the goal, and the player who hit it with his stick would get an assist. Kicking the puck in is forbidden, along driving the goalie into the net with the puck and hitting the puck in with the blade raised above the height of the stick. If those are seen, the goal is disallowed and play resumes at the appropriate faceoff spot.
9. How high must the glass partitions around the penalty bench at least be?

Answer: 5 feet

Rule 3.2. This is mainly for the protection of the fans. It may be 10 or 15 feet, but it must not be shorter than 5 feet.
10. During overtime, Team A pulls its goalie for an extra attacker. Seconds later, their goalie returns to the ice. Is Team A to be penalized, and if so, which form of penalty will they receive?

Answer: Yes; bench-minor

Rule 84.2. During overtime, goalies may not change "on-the-fly" as the others do. He may only replace the extra attacker at the next stoppage of play. Furthermore, if Team B was to score from Team A's goalie's absence, not only would Team B win, but Team A would forfeit the automatic point in the league standings given for taking a game to overtime.
