The club were originally called Argyle F.C., adopting their present name in 1903. Although there is some debate as to the origin of their name, it is thought likely that it refers to either the Argyle Tavern pub or a street called Argyle Terrace.

The Southern League was, at the time, arguably the strongest in England outside of the Football League, most of whose members were in the north or midlands of the country. Other members of the SL in Argyle's first season included Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Fulham and Southampton.

The Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America in 1620 aboard the Mayflower. The club adopted the Pilgrims as their nickname, and the ship appears on the club's badge.

They moved there in 1901, from Marsh Mills. Home Park is situated within the grounds of a large public park called Central Park. The record attendance for the stadium was set in 1936 when 43,596 people watched Argyle play Aston Villa. After much redevelopment in the early 21st century, the ground had an all-seated capacity of just over 18,000.

Before 1958, the third tier of the Football League was divided into north and south sections, with only the champions of each section being promoted. Argyle had the misfortune to finish in second place for six consecutive seasons from 1921-22 until 1926-27. In 1929-30, they finally made it to Division Two, finishing as champions by seven points from Brentford.

Plymouth Argyle are one of the few teams in the Football League to wear green shirts. Black and white have also featured on the shirts regularly throughout the years - shirt designs tend to change from season to season, but green and white stripes, green and black stripes or just plain green shirts are the most common Argyle colours.

Plymouth and Portsmouth may be separated by around 170 miles, but the naval/maritime histories of the two cities mean that there is a fierce rivalry between them. In 2016, the two teams met in the semi-finals of the League Two play-offs, with Argyle prevailing over the two legs, although they would go on to lose to Wimbledon in the final at Wembley.

Plymouth Argyle were a Third Division team in 1983-84, and weren't expected to progress far in the F.A. Cup. A favourable draw in the early rounds, followed by upset victories over West Bromwich Albion and Derby County, saw them reach the semi-finals, where they met Watford at Villa Park.

A solitary goal by John Reilly was enough to end Argyle's Wembley dream, with Watford going on to lose to Everton in the final.

Answer: Kevin Hodges

Kevin Hodges was a midfielder who joined Argyle as a teenager in 1978. Over the next 14 years, he scored 87 goals in 620 appearances in all competitions. He helped the club to promotion to Division Two in 1986, and eventually moved to local rivals Torquay United in 1992. He would return to Argyle as team manager between 1998 and 2000.

Moses Russell was born in Tredegar, Wales, in 1888. He spent 16 seasons with Plymouth Argyle between 1914 and 1930. Twenty of his 23 caps for Wales were won whilst he was an Argyle player.
He was Plymouth Argyle's most-capped player of the 20th century.
