Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1996-97 season, David Beckham scored from the half way line against Wimbledon using which of these?

Answer: His right foot

Indeed Beckham, playing for Manchester United scored with his favoured right foot, shooting from inside his own half to lob Neil Sullivan from 60 yards out. United won the game 3-0. Ever since then I've taken notice of how far goalkeepers stand off their line during matches. Paul Jones seems to venture out more than most, of course Fabien Barthez is the worst culprit. Beckham's goal was also voted 'Goal of the Decade' in the Premiership's first 10 years of existence getting 5% more votes than Bergkamp's majestic turn and shot against Newcastle towards the end of the decade. Matt Le Tissier's 1994 strike for the Saints against Blackburn in 1994 came third with 11% of the votes.
2. One of the best London Derbies was played out between Chelsea and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on 23rd November, 1999. Chelsea seemed to have secured the 3 points as they were leading 2-0 with 20 minutes to play. One Arsenal player however scored a hat-trick, the winner being a phenomenal strike past two defenders on the line from a seemingly impossible angle, after rounding the goalkeeper. Who was this player?

Answer: Kanu

I remember watching the highlights of this match with the dread of knowing what a comeback Arsenal were going to show. But what a comeback! A truly astonishing hat-trick from the out-of-favour Nigerian who often showed moments of ingenuity. One of my other favourite goals (which I unfortunately will not mention in the other questions so I'll do it here) is from this same derby, but not the same match. Arsenal versus Chelsea, and Silvinho's swerving strike from the left side of the area.

The spin on the forgotten left back's shot is mesmerising, akin to that of fellow Brazilian Roberto Carlos.
3. In 2001, the 10,000th Premiership goal was scored by Les Ferdinand playing for which club?

Answer: Tottenham Hotspur

It was fun - December 2001, after Manchester United had thrashed Derby County 5-0 in midweek, the 10,000th goal would be the first goal scored on the following normal Saturday afternoon by the first goalscorer of the afternoon - how lucky was that? I predicted it would be some defender scoring from an early corner but it turned out, justifiably, to be one of the all time Premiership top scorers.

At that time, Ferdinand was the Premiership's 3rd hightest goalscorer of all time behind Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, each having scored well over a hundred in the first 10,000 of the Premiership, so in effect, each has scored over 1% of all goals ever scored in the Premiership.
4. One player had a habit of scoring spectacular long-range goals, it seems that's all he ever did, but who is he?

Answer: Matt Le Tissier

Matt Le Tissier only played 8 times for England. Why? Because he played for lowly Southampton. Shame he wasn't around for the 2002-03 season then, when the Saints had a good season.
5. Chelsea thrashed promising Sunderland 4-0 on the opening day of the 99-00 season. The pick of the bunch was volleyed in by Gus Poyet in the 78th minute, but supplied by the "scoop" of which Italian?

Answer: Gianfranco Zola

Gianfranco Zola, was on his way to Serie B in Italy after an awesome 7 year Chelsea career after the 2002-03 season. One fabulous goal I can't mention in the questions (because it was in the FA Cup NOT the Premiership) came against plucky Norwich City. From a corner, Zola scored with his right foot, mid-air behind his left leg. Sublime. A Premiership legend.
6. Peter Schmeichel's only Premiership goal, scored in 2001, came on which ground?

Answer: Goodison Park

Schmeichel's ventures forward are well known. He has in fact scored a handful of goals in his career, but only one in the Premiership - a powerful volley against Everton at Goodison Park for Aston Villa. He also scored for Manchester United in the UEFA Cup and had an extraordinary over-head kick disallowed against Wimbledon in the FA Cup for offside (well done linesman for staying alert, with two goalkeepers that must have been confusing).
7. Which Liverpool midfielder, in successive seasons, scored brilliant goals at Old Trafford to win both matches 1-0?

Answer: Danny Murphy

Danny Murphy twice scored the only goal in this heated derby for Liverpool in Manchester to secure bragging rights for supporters of Pool for the coming months.
8. In the run-in for Bradford City at the end of an awful 2000-01 season, they at least provided one handsome performance for their supporters with an entertaining win over Charlton Athletic. The second goal was a spectacular side-footed volley from outside the area, by who?

Answer: Benito Carbone

Alas, it was against my team, but they always finish the season poorly. It was a great goal, you cannot deny, by Carbone who had the potential to be a Premiership legend.
9. In the 2001-02 season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slotted under Dean Kiely to put United 2-1 up against Charlton Athletic, the ball having come back off the cross-bar from a shot at the half way line by which United midfielder?

Answer: Ryan Giggs

Yes, once again against my team. I only wish I had been there - I was not a season ticket holder until the next year. Manchester United had only just equalised through the Welsh Wizard and a matter of seconds had passed from the kick off when Giggs turned and hit the ball on the bounce from just inside the Addick's half.

The ball made a black mark on the bar and the Baby Faced Assassin was there (as always) in the right place at the right time. Obviously he was running into position whilst everyone else just stood and "gorped". Fantastic goal.
10. Tony Yeboah scored a 'belter' at Selhurst Park against Wimbledon in the 1995-96 season. His control on the chest and knee found him some space as he drove to the edge of the area and then he unleashed a bullet into the top right hand corner. He was swamped by his team-mates, who played for which club?

Answer: Leeds United

Unusual phrasing of the question, I know, but just to keep you on your toes. This goal is my all-time favourite goal, just for the power and accuracy. I get such a buzz each time I watch it, Yeboah scored his fair share of awesome goals. This goal came in an awesome 4-2 away win for Leeds at Wimbledon, Yeboah scoring a hat-trick.
11. In 1996, which Italian scored a memorable hat-trick on his Premiership debut in a thrilling 3-3 draw on the first day of the season?

Answer: Fabrizio Ravanelli

The white haired Fabrizio Ravenelli got off to the best of starts for his new club Middlesbrough when he scored all 3, only problem was the defence also conceeded 3, to Liverpool. His celebration was memorable too, he pulled his shirt over his head and ran around with his arms streched out. Did you know FIFA have now banned players from removing their shirts in goal celebrations?
12. Jon Harley scored a scorching shot at Loftus Road in the 2002-03 season, hitting the ball on the run from far outside the area. With such power and curve, the goalkeeper had no chance. Who was young Harley playing for?

Answer: Fulham

One of my favourite goals of that season, Harley seemingly came out of nowhere to strike this shot with awesome power. Of course, Fulham played their home games at Loftus Road in the 2002-03 season while the plans for a new ground were decided upon.
13. Dennis Bergkamp, in France '98 against Argentina, scored the best goal of the tournament. From a long pass into the area he showed astonishing control to bring the ball down and finish powerfully into the net above the goalkeeper. It was remarkably similar to a goal he scored against Leicester City in a thrilling match at Filbert Street. Who set him up by providing the incisive pass in THAT match?

Answer: David Platt

The similarity between the two goals is remarkable and both are considered to be two of the Ducthman's best. The pass came from David Platt who returned from Italy to help Arsenal to the Premiership trophy.
14. In the 2002-03 season, Manchester United travelled to St James's Park to face a daunting but crucial tie with Newcastle. It proved nothing short of a walk-over for the Red Devils who trounced the title outsiders 6-2. The first fabulous strike of the game came from which young talent?

Answer: Jermaine Jenas

The quality of goals in this game was remarkable and United demonstrated why Newcastle were only outsiders in the bid for the title race that year. However the first strike went to young Jenas, who volleyed in from outside the area after the ball worked slowly to the edge of the area. Paul Scholes scored one of the best Premiership hat-tricks ever: one swift passing move finished with a clean volley into the bottom corner; one bullet from the edge of the accuracy - the trademark Scholes strike; one neat finish after half time.

Another promosing young star, John O'Shea, also shined as he hit the woodwork after some tidy footwork.
15. The first ever Premiership goal is memorable just because it is that - the first Premiership goal. Scored on the opening day of the season in 1992 against eventual champions Manchester United, but by who?

Answer: Brian Deane

Brian Deane scored the first ever Premiership goal in a 2-1 win for Sheffield United against Manchester United who finished quite a few points in front of the Villans, Canaries and Rovers. The Blades would struggle to shine this season and lose their only consistent scorer Deane to neighbours Leeds after the finish.
16. An extravagant mid-air scissors kick by this player, was commonly conceived as being the best goal of a season early in the 21st Century. He received a long drilled pass from his West Ham team-mate Trevor Sinclair, and from one edge of the area volleyed in superbly to the opposite corner. Which player scored this incredible goal?

Answer: Paolo Di Canio

Trevor Sinclair drilled a wonderful cross-field ball onto the flying boot of the extravagant Italian who wagged his finger in disbelief in celebration of the goal.
17. Which youngster grabbed the headlines and took the country by storm when he curled into the top corner over David Seaman to end Arsenal's long unbeaten run?

Answer: Wayne Rooney

An easy one this, at 16 years old Wayne Rooney became the youngest player ever to score in the Premiership only for an even younger Milner to score for Leeds later in the 2002-03 season. The bulky Rooney however has made even more of an impact by consistently playing well for Everton, scoring against Arsenal again at Highbury later in the season, and being picked to play for England on a few occasions.

A star of the future, and a perfect partner for Owen in England matches at last!
18. Fondly remembered by Charlton fans is the 4-2 victory over Arsenal at Highbury in 2001-02. By far the best goal of the day came from one of Charlton's many brilliant midfelders. A clumsy Arsenal throw in lead to Patrick Viera having the ball nicked away from him, the Charlton midfielder quickly looked up and from the right corner of the area and looped an astonoshing chip into the net, in off the underside of the bar AND post. Who scored?

Answer: Claus Jensen

Being a Charlton fan, this is one of my favourite goals and favourite matches. In Arsenal's double winning season they only lost three matches, this being the most surprising. Arsenal took a deserving early lead but heroic defending prevented it being 5-0 in the first 20 minutes. Charlton scored two late on in the first half, from two free kicks (their only chances) while Arsenal continued to squander every chance they had.

After the break Claus Jensen chipped an exquisite goal into the net and Jason Euell added a fourth to make in 4-1 after only 60 minutes. Arsenal showed signs of a comeback and only scored one more, a penalty, after Henry had gone down (far too easily) in the box. Arsenal should have won 20-5 but wasted nearly all their chances.
19. Kanu scored a cheeky goal against Middlesborough in a 6-1 drubbing at the Riverside in 1999, but which colour strip were Arsenal wearing?

Answer: Yellow

One picture I always remember in my head is Kanu running backwards slowly towards the corner flag smiling giddily and pointing to the sky wearing that hideous yellow kit. A funny story from that game is what I heard on the radio. Arsenal were 6-0 up when Neil Armstrong scored a late consolation for Borough, whose fans (well, those that were left) started singing "You're not singing anymore!", classic. I've experienced a 6-1 home drubbing of your side, and once the score reaches a certain absurdity the home crowd searches for anything slightly amusing in order to make the best of the situation.
20. An otherwise boring 1-0 win for Derby over Southampton in the latter end of the period 1992 to 2003 provided one of the most fantastic own-goals ever. From a low corner, what happened?

Answer: The defender hit the ball high into the air, it came down, no-one touched it and bounced into the net.

I remember this one from "The Monday Night Premiership" show on ITV in which the Derby representative had a video diary taken of him at this game. He and the others at Pride Park watched as a defender, who was rushing towards his goal hit the ball high into the air.

The goalkeeper thought it was going out but it had so much spin that it fell back onto the pitch directly next to the goal line and span high up into the roof of the net. The Derby representative described it as "80 yard shot - 40 yards up and 40 yards down". Hope you enjoyed the quiz! Please send me any corrections though I'm 99% sure about all the facts I have provided and omitted any information I had doubts on.
