Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player in baseball history to hit more than 25 home runs in a season?

Answer: Ned Williamson

Williamson played for the Chicago White Stockings in 1884. His 27 home runs, along with his team's 142 total home runs was a fluke. Lakefront Park had very short fences, and 1884 was the only season at Lakefront that allowed a home run when the ball cleared the fence. All other seasons at Lakefront Park had the rule that it was only a double.

Other than Williamson's 27, his season high was only nine home runs. The Providence Grays took the National League pennant in 1884, and they only hit 21 home runs as a team.
2. The new American League took roots in 1901 with eight new teams. How many inaugural teams moved to different cities within the first five seasons?

Answer: 2

The American League began with the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Americans, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Blues, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Athletics, and Washington Senators. Only two teams moved, and both after the 1902 season. The Orioles moved to New York and became the New York Highlanders.

The Yankees took the New York name in 1913. The Milwaukee Brewers moved to St. Louis after the 1902 season also, and became the St. Louis Browns. In 1954, that franchise moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles.
3. Who was the first pitcher in baseball history to win 50 games in a season?

Answer: Al Spalding

Spalding was with the Boston Red Stockings in the National Association from 1871-1875, before the team and the league went defunct in 1875. The Red Stockings took every league pennant except in 1871. Al threw a 52-16 record in 1874, then topped that by going 55-5 in 1875. He retired with the Chicago White Stockings of the National League in 1877.
4. Which of these sluggers retired with the most career home runs?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

Sosa retired in 2005 with the Orioles, then came back with the Rangers in 2007 to hit 21 more and become a member of the 600 Home Run Club with his 609. His season high was 66 in 1998. Sammy was the first player in history to hit 50 home runs in four consecutive seasons.

He hit 63 in 1999, 50 in 2000, and another 64 in 2001. Those four seasons saw him average 60.75 home runs per season. Robinson hit 586, McGwire 583, and Killebrew hit 573.
5. Howard Frazee was known as the Boston Red Sox owner who sold the great Babe Ruth to the Yankees on January 3, 1920. However, this was not the first time that Ruth was sold to a team. Who sold Ruth to the Boston Red Sox in 1914?

Answer: Jack Dunn

Dunn owned the Baltimore Orioles of the International League that had a Minor League label. When the Baltimore Terrapins were selected to play in the new Federal League in 1914 instead of the Orioles, Dunn was crushed and claimed that his team could beat any Federal League team. Dunn was going bankrupt, and decided to sell the 19-year old Babe Ruth to Frazee and the Red Sox.

The rest is history.
6. Which manager set a record for managing an All-Star team 10 times?

Answer: Casey Stengel

The first All-Star game was held in 1933 with the American League winning the inaugural game 4-2. Stengel also set a record for managing in consecutive seasons twice. He helmed the American League team from 1949-1953, then again from 1955-1959. Casey was most noted for taking the Yankees to 10 World Series appearances in a 12-season span. 1947-1957 was the first time that fans were allowed to select the starters of an All-Star game. That opportunity came back in 1970 for the fans, and continued for many decades.
7. Which Negro League player was the very first player in any professional league to wear protective headgear at-bat?

Answer: Willie Wells

Wells was with the St. Louis Stars in 1924 of the Negro National League. In one game, he was hit in the head by a pitch. The next time at-bat, Wells borrowed a construction hat from a worker at the ballpark and wore it.
8. Which player in the 1940s hit the most home runs in one season during the decade?

Answer: Ralph Kiner

Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates took four home run crowns in the 1940s, and seven consecutive from 1946-1952. His season high was 54 that he hit in 1949. Ralph was still unable to finish better than fourth in his career for the MVP voting. He played for only 10 seasons but still hit 369 home runs.
9. Major League Baseball finally put their foot down due to fan violence against players, and prosecuted many fans for assault when they threw soda and beer bottles at players and umpires for the first time. Which year was this curtailment?

Answer: 1921

Baseball was still rebounding from the 1919 Black Sox Scandal in the World Series, and the head brass was still trying to clean up the game. One major issue was fan violence, and because some players retaliated by jumping into the stands after fans, Major League Baseball put the word out. Any fan who threw an article on to the field in the direction of any player, manager, or umpire, would be prosecuted. Vendors were paid extra as investigators and witnesses, and the leagues prosecuted 77 fans in the season.

This brought the game with fans back under a lot more control. However, in later years, Joe Medwick was removed from a 1934 World Series game by umpires for his own protection against fans in the outfield, after a brawl ensued in the previous inning.
10. On July 7, 1941, Yankee Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak came to an end. What else happened on that day?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio was selected for the U.S. Army Draft

With each draft number representing only one person, the number 90 was called out, and it belonged to Joe DiMaggio, but not the Yankee Clipper. It belonged to 21-year old Joe DiMaggio (no relation). The press had a field day with it, some stating that the Yankee had been drafted, and some relieved that he dodged the bullet.
