1. In which season did the Sixth Man of the Year award begin?

Answer: 1982-83

The inaugural award in 1983 was presented to Bobby Jones of the Philadelphia 76ers. Bobby was in his 10th season in the NBA, and averaged 23.8 minutes per game in that season as their sixth man, and scored nine points per game.
2. Who was the first player in NBA history to win the Sixth Man of the Year award twice?

Answer: Kevin McHale

McHale won it in the second and third presentation of the award in 1984 and 1985. Kevin was a Boston Celtic his entire career from 1980-1993. He shared the front court of Boston with Cedric Maxwell, Larry Bird, and Robert Parish. The Celtics won the NBA Championship for the 1983-84 season.

In the 1984-85 season, they went to the finals again, but lost to the Lakers. McHale was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.

Answer: Detlef Schrempf

Detlef Schrempf began his NBA career in 1985 with Dallas, then was traded midseason in the 1988-89 season. He was a force that he created while in Dallas. With his new Indiana Pacers team, he won his first award in the 1990-91 season, then repeated it in the 1991-92 season.

After the 1992-93 season, Detlef was traded to the Sonics where he played for six seasons, then it was two seasons in Portland before he retired in 2001. He averaged 13.9 points per game throughout his career.

The Laker franchise had always been known for keeping nine players deep. In other words, a starting five, then rotating another four bench players regularly. In 20 presentations, the Celtics won three (two by Kevin McHale and one by Bill Walton), to lead the rest of the NBA.

Curry played in all 82 games in the season, averaging 26.5 minutes per game. He also averaged 16.3 points per game. He was in his eighth season in the NBA, and his fifth with the Hornets when he won the award. Dell played for 16 seasons, retiring with the Raptors in 2002.

Answer: Philadelphia 76ers

It was in the first season of the Sixth Man Award. The 1982-83 76ers went to the NBA Finals with Bobby Jones, and met the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers rostered Kareem, James Worthy, Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper, Jamaal Wilkes, and a host of others.

The Lakers went 54-24 in the season while Philadelphia went 65-17. Moses Malone was the series MVP, and helped his 76ers to a four games to none championship.
7. Toni Kukoc played with four teams throughout his NBA career. With which team did he win a Sixth Man of the Year award?

Answer: Chicago Bulls

Toni played in seven seasons with the Bulls, and it was his third season that we won the award in 1995-96. The Bulls also won the NBA Championship, and Toni three-peated by winning two more NBA Championships in 1996-97, and 1997-98. Kukoc played for 13 seasons, and retired with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2006.
8. Who was the first Detroit Piston to win the Sixth Man of the Year award?

Answer: Corliss Williamson

Nicknamed "Big Nasty", Williamson won it with his first full season with the Pistons in 2001-02. He played for the Kings prior to a Pistons trade. He averaged just under 22 minutes per game in 2001-02, and averaged 13.6 points per game. Corliss played for 12 seasons in the NBA, and retired back with the Kings in 2007.
9. Danny Manning won a Sixth Man of the Year award with which team?

Answer: Phoenix Suns

Manning won the award in his 10th season in the NBA. It was his fourth season with the Suns in that 1997-98 season.
10. Who won the Sixth Man of the Year award for the 2007-08 season?

Answer: Manu Ginobili

The others were already for at least five seasons. Manu Ginobili was in his sixth NBA season, and all with the Spurs in 2007-08. Gino averaged just under 20 points per game in the regular season. With his just over five rebound average per game along with his four assists average, he also shot a .400 percentage for three-pointers.
