Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yelena Produnova is readying herself for the vault, and her vault involves a powerful run, a jump on to the springboard, a forward handspring on to the horse, and two tucked saltos off to land. What skill is this?

Answer: Handspring double front

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Produnova, of Russia, was one of the first women to do this incredibly difficult skill well. For her efforts, this vault was named after her.
2. On vault is Elena Zamolodchikova. She salutes and sprints down the runway, leaping on to the springboard and performing a half twist on to the horse and a back salto off to land. What skill is this?

Answer: Tsukahara

Zamolodchikova, also of Russia, performed a variation of this vault and had it named after her. Her version was a half on, double layout full off.
The first Tsukahara was performed by a member of the 1972 Japanese men's team, Mitsuo Tsukahara.
3. On vault is Alicia Sacramone. She steps into the chalk box and over to the end of the runway dusting off the excess powder on her feet. Deep breath, and she's charging down the runway. She performs a round-off on to the springboard, flic-flac on to the horse, and then pushes into a laid-out double twist to land. Which maneuver is this?

Answer: Yurchenko double

Sacramone spent the 2004-2008 quad the sole star for the United States on vault. She typically performed a Yurchenko double and a laid-out Rudi. Both vaults are from different vault families. All Yurchenko vaults begin with a round-off onto the springboard. Rudi's are part of the handspring vault family and do not include a round-off.
4. Gymnasts are busily preparing the even bars for the next competitor, Mo Huilan. Mounting the bars, she begins to swing, switching giants and speeds up to her release, which involves a front flip over the high bar to catch. What skill is this called?

Answer: Gaylord

Mo Huilan was the first known female to compete this skill in elite international competition. Television viewers gasped watching her perform this during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Very few international gymnasts have attempted this skill since that time.
5. On bars is Svetlana Khorkina. She scowls at the judges and spits on her palms. Running, she hits a springboard and vaults over the low bar to the high bar. A few skills and she's back down to the low bar. Next comes her low to high transition beginning with a free hip circle, releasing the low bar and launching toward the high bar to catch. What skill is this?

Answer: Shaposhnikova

A Shaposhnikova was invented by the Russian gymnast, Natalia Shaposhnikova in the late 1970s. Several gymnasts have created variations of this skill, including Khorkina (adding a half twist during the flight phase to catch).
6. On bars, Emilie Lepennec straightens her grips and takes a deep breath. A few quick steps and she vaults over the low bar and begins her giants, hop full and one more giant before she releases. Her release involves a backward salto completing a 1/2 twist before re-grasp on the same bar. What maneuver is this called?

Answer: Geinger

Lepennec of France upped the difficulty level of this skill by adding another full twist (thus a 1.5 twist) before her re-grasp. This addition makes the skill a "Def", named after Jacques Def also of France (although male). Lepennac's bars routine won her the gold medal on bars at the 2004 Olympic games in Athens.
7. Vanessa Atler stops biting her lip long enough to toe shoot to the high bar. Giant full pirouette to a Tkatchev, then moving to her second high bar release move beginning with a kip/cast to front salto in the straddled position. What skill is this?

Answer: Comaneci

The Comaneci was invented by Nadia Comaneci of Romania and first performed by Nadia in the mid-to-late 1970s. It was a skill included in Vanessa Atler's elite bars routine, although she rarely completed it in competition (usually fell). It continued to be her nemesis throughout her elite career until her retirement shortly after the 2000 Olympics. Vanessa was an international elite gymnast for the United States in the 1996-2000 time frame.
8. The air echos with hollow thuds as the various girls warm up for the beam. The timer has started and Nastia Liukin begins with a beautiful straddle press to handstand. Her next skill involves a back handspring with a half twist to a front walkover forward. What is this called?

Answer: Onodi

This skill is referenced in the Code of Points as an "Onodi", named after the beautiful Hungarian gymnast, Henrietta Onodi. Onodi wasn't the first to do this skill, but she was the first to submit it through the proper channels to have it named after her. American Nastia Liukin just happened to perform this skill very nicely in her World and Olympic medal winning routine.
9. On beam, Fan Ye of China straddle presses to sit. Switch leap, back tuck and she has survived her first acro series. Her next dance element shows beautiful extension as she split-leaps so huge she is arched backward, and her head full released back resulting in a blind landing. What skill is this called?

Answer: Yang Bo

This leap is credited to a fellow countrymen of Fan's. Yang Bo first performed this skill in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It is incredibly difficult as the gymnast takes her eyes off the beam and releases the head backwards so she is looking at the ceiling (or behind her). Fan Ye performed this skill beautifully and won the gold medal on beam at the 2003 World Championships.
10. On beam is Sarah Shire. She is using a springboard to mount the beam from the end. Running and jumping on to the springboard, she performs a front handspring on to the beam landing lightly on both feet. What is this called?

Answer: McCool

This skill was first performed and submitted by American Courtney McCool during the 2000-2004 Olympic quad. Courtney made the 2004 Olympic team and finished 13th in the All-Around during qualifications. However, due to the "two per country rule" she was not able to compete during All-Around finals.
11. On beam is Shantessa Pama. She uses a springboard to mount with a press to handstand, step-out. After her first acro series, she moves to her dance elements, a straddle leap followed by a leap where she leaps arching her neck and back. Bringing her pointed feet to the back of her head, she resembles the letter "O". What is this called?

Answer: Sheep jump

Pama had some of the best sheep jumps. She was best known for performing a triple back dismount from bars as a junior elite. A fan favorite, many people had high hopes for her bringing her beautiful style to the 2008 Olympic team. Unfortunately, chronic injuries forced her into early retirement.
12. Australian Daria Joura is about to perform her floor exercise. Her music begins, and she moves across the floor opening with a skill that includes a tucked double front salto, with a half twist out to land. What skill is this?

Answer: Podkopayeva

This skill was invented and submitted by 1996 Olympic All-Around gold medalist Lilia Podkopayeva of the Ukraine. Lilia was a beautiful performer on floor, and truly a complete gymnast across all four events. She suffered an injury shortly after the Olympics, retiring from the sport.
13. On floor is China's Cheng Fei. Opening choreography was followed by two back handsprings and into her first big skill. The skill begins with a back handspring, a half twist followed by two tucked front saltos. What skill is this?

Answer: Double Arabian

The double Arabian is a very distinct skill easily identified on both floor and beam. Variations of the skill on floor have been developed including doing the skill in the piked position (the "Dos Santos"), or in the laid-out position (the "Dos Santos II"). On beam, you commonly see the skill done standing in place or as a dismount (called the "Patterson").
14. On floor is the lovely Stefani Bismpikou of Greece. She completes her open pass, rebounding straight up to a straddled prone position in the air and then landing prone on the floor in front support. What is this called?

Answer: Shushunova

This skill was invented by Yelena Shushunova of Russia in the 1980s. It has been developed into different variations by several gymnasts, usually adding some amount of rotation from the air to the ground.
15. On floor is Elise Ray for the United States. Elise opens with a double layout, punch front, and then works through some choreography preparing for her second pass. She runs and performs a laid-out punch front with 1.5 twists. What skill is this called?

Answer: Rudi

Elise Ray was the 2000 U.S. National Champion and a member of the U.S. Olympic team in Sydney. She was a beautiful performer on all apparatus with several skills on bars named after her. During the Olympics, she was one of several gymnasts hampered by the vault being set at an incorrect height, crashing heavily on both her attempts. Disheartened, she did not do well for the rest of the competition despite being given permission to retry her vaults (she did not retry).

After the Olympics, Elise moved on to a successful career in NCAA gymnastics and then joined Cirque du Soleil.
