Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the remarkable things about this match, is that it was played over a reduced number of overs. Why was the number of overs reduced, and to how many?

Answer: Wet outfield delayed start. Reduced to 40 overs.

Wet weather occurred earlier in the day, and the game was delayed. The number of overs was reduced to 40 per innings. In spite of this, South Africa managed to score 353 runs, at a run rate of 8.82 runs per over, the highest run rate by a team batting first in a World Cup game. Netherlands won the toss, and sent South Africa in to bat first.
2. Herschelle Gibbs made history in his innings. What did he do that was so special?

Answer: First batsman to ever hit six sixes in an over in an ODI

The earlier record for the most number of runs in an over was 30, a feat performed twice by Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka. The new record of 36 runs far exceeds that. For his effort, Herchelle Gibbs received a million dollars towards charity from Johnnie Walker. His total of seven sixes is one less than the eight made by Ricky Ponting of Australia in the World Cup final in 2003. Herschelle made a total of 72 runs of 40 balls.
3. A record smashed was the fastest half-century in an ODI. Which player broke the record, and how many balls did he need to make 50 runs?

Answer: Mark Boucher - off 21 balls

Mark Boucher made 75 runs from 31 balls, using only 21 to get his half-century. The previous record was held by Brian Lara, of the West Indies, who used 23 balls, in a match against Canada. Mark Boucher was also the first South African wicketkeeper to score a half-century in a World Cup innings.
4. How many sixes were hit in the South African innings?

Answer: 18

This was another record for an ODI. The previous best of 16 sixes in an ODI innings had been achieved by both Australia and New Zealand.
5. In spite of the record-breaking achievements, the game got off to a bad start by South Africa. Which batsman was out for a duck, and how?

Answer: AB de Villiers - caught Smits, bowled Stelling

Once again, an opening batsman dismissed for a duck. AB de Villiers faced two balls, before being caught. Graeme Smith went on to make 67 runs, and Prince and Kemp did not bat.
6. Which South African-born Netherlands player scored the most number of runs against South Africa?

Answer: Ryan ten Doeschate

Ryan ten Doeschate made 57 runs off 74 balls, the highest number of runs in the Netherlands innings. De Leede made 21 runs, Kervezee made 17, and Szwarcynski made 12. They were the highest runs scorers in their team. Ryan ten Doeschate is an all rounder with the Essex county cricket team. Eric Szwarczynski was also born in South Africa.
7. What notable achievements was the South African vs Netherlands match known for?

Answer: All of these

It is also the 5th highest score in a World Cup match, even though only 40 overs were played, and the third largest victory margin in World Cup games.
8. Did the Netherlands team bat out the full 40 overs?

Answer: Yes

By the end of the 40 overs, Netherlands were nine wickets down. J Smits was their only player who did not bat.
9. What was the final result of the South African vs Netherlands match?

Answer: South Africa won by 221 runs

The final score by South Africa was 353 for 3 wickets after 40 overs. Netherlands responded with 132 runs for 9 wickets after their 40 overs.
10. Who was the player of the match in the South Africa vs Netherlands match of the Cricket World Cup 2007?

Answer: Herchelle Gibbs

After making history with six sixes in an over, Herchelle Gibbs deserved the player of the match title. Jacques Kallis made the most runs in the South African side, with 128 off 109 balls. Mark Boucher broke the record for the quickest half-century. Justin Kemp was the best South African bowler, picking up 2 wickets for 18 runs.
