Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When this Hall of Fame great retired in 1968, he retired with the most strikeouts of anyone in World Series play. This was probably because he went to 12 World Series in his career. Who was this player?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

Mickey went to all 12 World Series with the Yankees from 1951-1964. Mickey struck out nine times in the 1960 series in a loss to the Pirates, eight times in 1953 against the Dodgers, and another eight times against the Cardinals in 1964. Mantle more than made up for that by hitting a record 18 career World Series home runs.

He hit a total of 26 extra-base hits in World Series play. The Hall of Fame inducted him easily in 1974.
2. Which pitcher in the 1968 World Series set a record for striking out 35 batters in the series?

Answer: Bob Gibson

It was the Cardinals' Bob Gibson against the 31-6 Denny McLain and the Tigers in the 1968 World Series. McLain fell apart in the series, but teammate Mickey Lolich stepped up to win three of the Tigers' four games for the win. Gibson struck out a tremendous 35 Tigers in only 27.0 innings. Bob's ERA was 1.67.

He also broke his own record of striking out 31 in the 1964 World Series against the Yankees.
3. Which player in the 2009 World Series set a new record for striking out 13 times in a series?

Answer: Ryan Howard

The 2009 World Series pitted Howard and the Phillies against the New York Yankees. Howard, who hit 45 home runs in the season, struck out 13 times in 25 at-bats in the series. Ryan hit one home run and batted only .174 against the Yankees. New York won the series four games to two. Howard also set a season record in 2007 for striking out 199 times, which was broken by Mark Reynolds of the Diamondbacks in 2008 with 204.
4. Which of these Hall of Fame pitchers won the most season strikeout crowns in their career?

Answer: Walter Johnson

Johnson was a career Washington Senator from 1907-1927. He won 10 strikeout titles. Ryan, who retired with a record 5714 career strikeouts, won nine titles. Bob Feller was next up by winning seven. Carlton won five.
5. Which Hall of Fame slugger led the American League seven times by striking out the most times in a season?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

Although Foxx retired with 534 home runs to his credit, he led the American League in striking out from 1929-1931, 1933, 1935 and 1936, then finally in 1941. He still would win the AL MVP in 1932, 1933, and 1938, and batted for the Triple Crown in 1933, the fourth time that he led the league in striking out also.
6. In the 2009 season, which team led the National League by striking out the most times?

Answer: Arizona Diamondbacks

The Nationals won only 59 games in the season, and the Diamondbacks won 11 more, but still led the league by striking out 1298 times as a team. The Rockies, although finishing in second place in the NL West, struck out 1277 times.
7. Which pitcher threw three complete games in a World Series, won all three, and shutout the opposing team in each one for a 0.00 ERA?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

The 1905 World Series pitted the New York Giants against the Philadelphia Athletics. Mathewson went 33-9 in the season but didn't stop there. In 27.0 World Series innings, Christy allowed 13 hits, struck out 18, and walked one for his three shutout wins. The Giants won the series four games to one.
8. Who was the first pitcher in history to strike out 3500 batters in their career?

Answer: Walter Johnson

The others never reached the 3000-strikeout plateau in their careers at all. Johnson of the Senators reached the 3000-milestone in the 1923 season. He led the league 12 times in strikeouts. Walter retired with 3509. The great Cy Young retired with 2803.
9. Reggie Jackson retired with a career record of 2597 strikeouts. Whose career record did Reggie break in 1982?

Answer: Willie Stargell

The others did not strikeout even 1500 times. Willie "Pops" Stargell was a career Pittsburgh Pirate and retired in 1982 with 1936 career strikeouts. Reggie played for five more seasons until 1987, and struck out 100+ times in each season except for his 1987 final with 97. Jackson also struck out 24 times in five World Series.
10. In 1988, Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden set a League Championship Series record by striking out 20 Los Angeles Dodger hitters. Which Oriole and later Yankee pitcher came along in 1997 and struck out 25 in the ALCS?

Answer: Mike Mussina

Before becoming a Yankee in 2001, Mussina was on fire in the 1997 ALCS against the Cleveland Indians. Mike threw 25 strikeouts in only 15.0 innings in the series. The Indians would still win the series four games to two, then would lose to the Marlins four games to three in the World Series.
