Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first team from the American Football League to win the NFL championship?

Answer: The Miami Dolphins

The New York Jets were the first AFL team to win the Super Bowl, upsetting the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. However, that game took place before the NFL-AFL merger was made official following the 1969 season. When the Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII, they became the first franchise originally from the AFL to win a Super Bowl played for the NFL title.
2. Dan Marino was the first quarterback from the famed class of '83 to start a Super Bowl, losing to the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XIX. Who was the second quarterback from that class to start a Super Bowl?

Answer: Tony Eason

University of Illinois product Tony Eason started Super Bowl XX for the New England Patriots against the Chicago Bears. He struggled in the loss, however, and was replaced in the second quarter by popular veteran Steve Grogan. John Elway and Jim Kelly later appeared in a combined nine Super Bowls, while fellow '83 draftees Ken O'Brien and Todd Blackledge appeared in none.
3. Who was the first quarterback to start a Super Bowl against his former team?

Answer: Craig Morton

Craig Morton played ten seasons for the Dallas Cowboys and was their starting quarterback in Super Bowl V, losing to the Baltimore Colts. In 1977, Morton won the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award while leading the Denver Broncos to the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance. The Broncos faced the Cowboys in Super Bowl XII and lost 27-10.
4. The Pittsburgh Steelers, the Miami Dolphins, and the Oakland Raiders dominated the AFC during the 1970s, winning a combined seven Super Bowls. Which team lost a Super Bowl to all three of them?

Answer: The Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota dropped Super Bowl VIII to Miami, Super Bowl IX to Pittsburgh, and Super Bowl XI to Oakland.
5. How many interceptions total did Joe Montana throw in his four Super Bowl appearances?

Answer: 0

In leading the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1980s, Joe Montana did not throw a single interception in any of those Super Bowls.
6. Minnesota Vikings legend Fran Tarkenton is sometimes erroneously referred to as the first quarterback to lose four Super Bowls, when in fact he was not a member of the team when they made their first appearance, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl IV. Who was Minnessota's starting QB in that game?

Answer: Joe Kapp

Nicknamed "Engine", scrappy veteran Joe Kapp is one of the lesser known quarterbacks to have guided his team to the Super Bowl.
7. Before their run of dominance in the 1970s, the Pittsburgh Steelers were notable for having lost two quarterbacks who eventually went on to lead their respective teams to victory in the Super Bowl. Who are the two quarterbacks?

Answer: Johnny Unitas and Len Dawson

The Steelers drafted Johnny Unitas out of Louisville in 1955, but cut him before the season began to make room on the roster for other quarterbacks. Unitas would eventually lead the Baltimore Colts to several NFL Championships, including a victory in Super Bowl V against the Dallas Cowboys despite being knocked out of the game in the second quarter.

In 1957, the Steelers drafted Len Dawson out of Purdue. Dawson was traded in 1960 to the Cleveland Browns and would ultimately wind up with the Kansas City Chiefs (formerly the Dallas Texans) of the American Football League. Dawson eventually led the Chiefs to the franchise's only Super Bowl win, defeating the Vikings in Super Bowl IV.
8. Super Bowl I (originally called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game) was played in the Los Angeles Coliseum on January 15, 1967. How long before that date was L.A. awarded that game?

Answer: Six weeks

Due to the logistics of playing a game between seperate leagues (The NFL and the AFL), and the question of how well the event would go over with fans and media, some cities actually passed on the oppurtunity to host Super Bowl I. Six weeks before kickoff, Los Angeles agreed to be the host city.

Some of the fears harbored by the city and the two leagues turned out to be well founded. Due to each league's respective television contracts, Both NBC and CBS had to televise the game simultaneously, which created problems during the broadcast.

In the first 40 Super Bowls, Super Bowl I remained the only non sell-out game.
9. The Dallas Cowboys were the first winner in history to return to the Super Bowl the following year and lose, winning Super Bowl XII against the Denver Broncos and losing Super Bowl XIII to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Which franchise became the second to accomplish this dubious feat?

Answer: The Washington Redskins

The Washinston Redskins won Super Bowl XVII by defeating the Miami Dolphins. They returned the following season, but lost to the Los Angeles Raiders.
10. In terms of yardage, who was the leading running back for the 1981 San Francisco 49ers, the season they won their first Super Bowl?

Answer: Ricky Patton

Ricky Patton led the 1981 SF 49ers with 543 rushing yards. Running backs Earl Cooper and Bill Ring were also on the roster. The 49ers did not draft Roger Craig until 1983.
