Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Opening day was marred by the death of a Georgian athlete during a practice session. Which sport was he training for when the tragedy occurred?

Answer: luge

A luge is a small sled on which one races laying down, face up and feet first. The Georgian athlete lost control of his luge going nearly 90 mph through one of the turns, and he was thrown into the air and into an unpadded steel support pole. After the accident the track was modified to decrease the speeds by at least five mph, but further analysis demonstrated that the track was not at fault in the accident.
2. The pairs figure skating event was won by a couple competing in their fourth Olympics. These veteran skaters gave their country its first-ever Olympic figure skating title. Which country were they from?

Answer: China

Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo are a husband-and-wife team who, though they were in their thirties, came back for one last try and struck gold. With another Chinese team winning the silver medal, and Germany winning the bronze, this was the first time since 1960 that there were no Russian or Soviet Union skaters on the winners podium for this event.
3. Simon Ammann created quite a buzz at Vancouver when he became the first man to win gold medals in both individual ski jumping events in two Olympic games. What country does Ammann hail from?

Answer: Switzerland

The Austrian team protested that Ammann's ski bindings gave him an unfair aerodynamic advantage, but the international ski federation rejected the complaint. Amman proceeded to win two gold medals, thereby becoming the most decorated Swiss Olympic athlete of all time.
4. Who won the women's figure skating event?

Answer: Kim Yu-Na of South Korea

Kim Yu-Na skated flawlessly to win with an incredible total of 228.56 points, breaking her own world record by 18 points. This gave South Korea its first-ever gold medal in a Winter Olympics other than in speed skating. The other choices are the winners of the women's figure skating event at the prior three Olympics.
5. Which snowboarding superstar, sometimes called "The Flying Tomato" for his long, red hair, won gold in the halfpipe, repeating his win of four years earlier in the 2006 Olympics?

Answer: Shaun White

White has enjoyed corporate sponsorship since the tender age of seven, and, according to Forbes magazine, had parlayed his fame to endorsements totaling nine million dollars a year by the time of the 2010 Winter Games.
6. Which country won its first gold medal since 1948 in the four-man bobsled?

Answer: United States

The U.S. sled, nicknamed "Night Train", was driven to victory by its team led by Steven Holcomb.
7. Which country won the women's curling event?

Answer: Sweden

With King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia looking on, Sweden edged Canada in an exciting gold medal game, tying the score with two points in the tenth end, and then scoring a point in the 11th end to win. Interestingly, the King and Queen had met 38 years earlier at an Olympic games, the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics.
8. Who won the men's ice hockey event?

Answer: Canada

The listed teams were the four semi-finalists. The United States and Canada each comfortably won their semi-final game, then in the finals Canada won a thrilling 3-2 victory over the U.S. in overtime. This represented considerable redemption for the Canadian hockey team, as they had failed to win any medal at all at the 1988 Calgary games, the only prior time the Winter Games had been held on Canadian soil.
9. Which individual won the most medals in these Olympics?

Answer: Marit Bjorgen of Norway, in women's cross-country

Marit Bjorgen won five medals: three golds, a silver, and a bronze. The other choices listed got more press, but none won more than three medals.
10. Which country won the most medals at the Vancouver games?

Answer: United States

The U.S. finished with 37 medals, followed by Germany at 30, Canada with 26, and Norway with 23. However, Norway left the 2010 games still in the lead for all-time Winter Olympic medals with 290, comfortably ahead of the U.S. which had 237. Interestingly, the stats for all-time medals per capita showed tiny Liechtenstein in the lead.
