Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Motherwell Football Club was formed in 1886 by the merger of Glencairn FC and which other club, founded by workers from a local engineering firm?

Answer: Alpha

Named for the Alpha Steam Crane and Engineering Works, Alpha FC had previously been Glencairn's great rivals but in 1886 the clubs decided to join together to create a new club under the town name. In its first match Motherwell defeated a club that became a traditional rival, Hamilton Academical, by 3-2.
2. Who became the first manager of Motherwell in 1911?

Answer: John "Sailor" Hunter

"Sailor" was not only the first manager but served the club as manager for 35 years. When he chose to step down in 1946 he remained as club secretary until 1959. It was under Hunter that Motherwell became a formidable team, one of the few who could challenge the domination of Celtic and Rangers in the 1920s and 1930s.

The others named were all players signed by Hunter. George Stevenson succeeded him as manager.

Answer: Alan Craig

Centre half Craig heard a shout of "Go for it, Alan" as the ball was crossed towards the Motherwell penalty area so tried to clear it only for the ball to deflect from his head past the other Alan, goalkeeper McClory, who was coming to intercept the ball. Celtic won the replay 4-2.
