Answer: 2002

Ward Burton won the race in 2002, inheriting the lead after Sterling Marlin pulled his fender out during a red flag (five laps to go), relegating Marlin to a tail end of the longest line on the last restart.

He led the most laps in the 2001 running, but was taken out in the dreaded "big one".

Answer: Jeff Burton

Jeff Burton was Ward's brother. He raced with Roush Racing most of his 22-year career before moving over to Richard Childress Racing in 2004 and finishing out in 2014 with Identity Ventures Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing as a part-time driver.

Ward Burton was born in South Boston, VA in October 1961.
The other cities have a racing history, with the Earnhardt family hailing from Kannapolis, Bill Elliott and his son from Dawsonville and the Waltrip brothers from Owensboro.

Ward Burton won the 2002 New England 300, after starting deep in the field. This also marked the final victory for Bill Davis Racing at the NASCAR Winston/Nextel/Sprint Cup Series level.

Ward Burton was let go from Bill Davis Racing with four races to go in the 2003 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. He got a ride with Haas CNC Racing and raced most of the 2004 Nextel Cup Series campaign with them, but was let go with two races left in the season after managing only two top 10s in 38 starts with the team.

His tenure at Morgan-McClure-Motorsports was abysmal to say the least. He qualified for 3 out of the 4 races he attempted with them in 2006 and got a best finish of 25th at Texas. His next season in 2007, he got 19 DNQs (did not qualify) and accomplished a best finish of 14th at Indianapolis in the 16 races he did make without even getting a chance to race at Homestead.
