Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did Hall Of Famer Harold "Pee Wee" Reese obtain his nickname?

Answer: He was a champion marble player

A peewee is another name for a marble, which Reese excelled at. He was a ten-time All-Star as a shortstop and was elected to the Hall Of Fame in 1984. Besides his many accomplishments on the field, perhaps his greatest was his support of Jackie Robinson and the desegregation of baseball.
2. What famous Willie was nicknamed "Pops"?

Answer: Willie Stargell

"Pops" Stargell was a seven-time All-Star who hammered out 475 homers and won the National League and World Series MVPs in 1979. He was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1988.
3. What "mad" nickname was given to reliever Al Hrabosky?

Answer: Mad Hungarian

Hrabosky earned his nickname because of his heritage and his goofy antics on the mound. He had a respectable career as a relief pitcher, topping the NL in saves and winning the "Sporting News Fireman Of The Year" award in 1975.
4. Outfielder and manager Harry Walker received what nickname from an article of clothing he continually adjusted in the batter's box?

Answer: Harry the Hat

"Harry The Hat" played for four different teams from 1940 through 1955 and was part of two world championship teams. He won National League batting title in 1947 and went on to manage the Cardinals, Pirates, and Astros.
5. All-Star third baseman Ron Cey was nicknamed after what creature?

Answer: Penguin

The Penguin played for the Dodgers, Cubs, and Athletics from 1971-1987. He was a six-time All-Star selection and led the Dodgers to the 1981 World Series championship as series MVP. He acquired the nickname in the Minor Leagues by then manager Tommy Lasorda for his slow, waddling running style.
6. Former New York Yankee pitcher Ron Guidry had what "stately" nickname?

Answer: Louisiana Lightning

Guidry, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, played 14 years in the majors from 1975-1988, all with the Yankees. He amassed 1788 strikeouts, a career 170-91 record, and an excellent 3.29 ERA. He was selected to four All-Star games, won five Gold Gloves and the 1978 AL Cy Young Award.
7. Slugger Gorman Thomas was known by the nickname "Stomin' Gorman. What was his other nickname?

Answer: The Perch Man

Thomas played in the majors from 1973-1986, mostly for the Milwaukee Brewers with short stops in Cleveland and Seattle. He won one home run title and tied for another, was selected to one All-Star team, and won AL Comeback Player of the Year in 1985.
8. Which base is called the "keystone sack"?

Answer: Second Base

Second base is called the keystone sack because its central location on a baseball diamond makes it of strategic defensive importance, and a runner on second is said to be in scoring position, where he can score on a single.
9. Pitcher Sal Maglie, famous for pitching inside to hitters, was given what nickname?

Answer: The Barber

Maglie played for five different teams from 1945-1958. He was part of the New York Giants 1954 World Series championship team, was a two-time All-Star, and won the NL ERA title in 1950. He is also one of a handful of pitchers to pitch a no-hitter. Both Don Drysdale and Jim Lonborg credit him with teaching them how to effectively pitch inside.
10. What player was nicknamed both "The Iron Horse" and "Biscuit Pants"?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Gehrig's accomplishments are almost too numerous to mention but include seven All-Star appearances, two American League MVP awards and an incredible 2130 straight games played, a record surpassed 56 years later by Ripken. His career and life was cut short by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurodegenerative disease now commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

His farewell speech at Yankee Stadium is considered one of the most powerful and moving speeches ever given by a pro athlete.
