Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first World Series skunk job of four games to none was provided by which National League team in the 1910s?

Answer: Boston Braves

The other teams did not exist in the 1910s. The Braves met the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1914 series, and put them down four games to none. The Athletics went 99-53 in the season, but couldn't come up with a win against the Braves. Two of the four losses were one-run games.

The Braves were led by Johnny Evers who batted .438, and Hank Gowdy who hit .545 in the series. Both Bill James and Dick Rudolph won two games each for the Braves.
2. The New York Yankees dominated baseball in the 20th Century by going to an amazing 36 World Series. How many times did they win by skunking a team four games to none?

Answer: 7

Their first victim was the Pirates in the 1927 series, via 'Murderers Row'. Those that followed were the Cubs in 1932 and 1938, the Reds in 1939, Phillies in 1950, in 1998 against the Padres, and the Braves in 1999. The Yankees themselves were skunked by their opponent only twice in the entire century. The Dodgers blanked them in 1963, and the Reds took care of them in 1976.
3. Which team was the first to provide a World Series skunk job in the 21st Century?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

The other teams never saw a World Series in the 2000s decade. Boston finally broke the so-called "Curse of the Bambino" in 2004 when they blanked the Cardinals four games to none. The White Sox provided a skunking to the Astros in the following season, and the Red Sox pulled another skunk job to the Rockies in 2007.
4. With Major League Baseball rules changes, there cannot be a called tie game in World Series play. The game will be resumed at a later date if need be. There were two World Series that had a tie involved in the past, and both times the series went 4-0-1. One series was the Giants-Yankees, and the other was the Tigers against whom?

Answer: Cubs

The others were American League teams, so they could not have played the Tigers in World Series play. The Tigers met the Cubs in the 1907 series which the Cubs won 4-0-1. The tie came in game one in the 12th inning with both teams having three runs each.

It was called due to darkness, but still lasted only 2hrs and 40min. It was the second of three consecutive appearances in the promised land for the Cubs.
5. There was only one skunking in World Series play between 1966-1989. Which National League team provided this feat in the 1970s?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

The Reds blanked the Yankees in the 1976 World Series. It would be a repeat crown as they defeated the Red Sox in 1975, four games to three.
6. Who was the first-ever team that was skunked in World Series play twice?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The Yankees provided both embarrassments to the Cubs. They skunked them in 1932 and 1938. The Yankees had a roster that managers and owners dream of with Gehrig, Ruth, DiMaggio, Dickey, Coombs, Gomez, Ruffing, and a host of others.
7. In the first 100 World Series from 1903-2004 (two were postponed), how many times did a team go home after being skunked four games to none?

Answer: 16

Four teams were even unfortunate enough to get skunked twice in 100 World Series showdowns. They were the Athletics, Cardinals, Cubs, and Yankees.
8. Losing a World Series four games to none is bad enough, but which team was skunked, and three of their losses were heart-breaking one-run games?

Answer: 1950 Phillies

The others listed were all World Series winners in that year. The Phillies faced the Yankees in 1950. The Phillies lost game one 1-0, game two 2-1, game three 3-2, and game four 5-2. In one of the lowest scoring World Series ever, the Yankees scored 11 runs against five runs by the Phillies.
9. In which season did Major League Baseball go to the best-of-seven game World Series format for the final time?

Answer: 1922

The first World Series in 1903 was a best-of-nine game format, then the following World Series was best-of-seven. They went back to the nine-game format for three seasons from 1919-1921, then went to the seven game format permanently.
10. In which two seasons were fans treated to two consecutive World Series skunks for the first time in history?

Answer: 1927 and 1928

There was no World Series in 1904 or 1994, and there was no World Series in the 1800s. The Bronx Bombers of New York, compliments of Babe Ruth and company put down the Pirates and then the Cardinals, respectively.
