Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In total, how many matches were played in the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup?

Answer: 51

There were 24 matches in the group stage, and 24 matches in the Super Eights round, both of which were based on points. The top four teams in the Super Eights went through to the two semi-finals, and the semi-final winners contested the final.
2. Only two batsmen managed to reach a half-century (50 runs) in the opening match of the tournament, played between Pakistan and the West Indies. Who were they?

Answer: Marlon Samuels and Shoaib Malik

The match was played at Sabina Park in Jamaica, where the West Indies defeated Pakistan by 54 runs. The West Indies batted first, posting a total of 241 runs, and then backed up their batting performance by bowling Pakistan out for 187.

Marlon Samuels scored 63 runs from 70 balls, while Shoaib Malik played an aggressive innings of 62 from 54 balls.
3. By runs, what was the largest victory margin in the World Cup?

Answer: 257 runs

The massive victory was achieved by India, playing against cricketing minnows Bermuda in the group stage. It was also the largest victory margin by runs in the history of One-Day International matches, narrowly edging past Australia's 256 run victory against Namibia in 2003.
4. The 5th match of the World Cup ended in a tie between Ireland and Zimbabwe. What was the run total which both sides managed to score?

Answer: 221 runs

In this amazing thriller, Zimbabwe needed just one run off the last ball to win the match, but Stuart Matsikenyeri played and missed, and the two batsmen took off in a final effort which resulted in a run-out to tie the match.

At one point in the match, Zimbabwe only needed 15 runs from 36 balls, but some good bowling combined with slow batting from Zimbabwe eventually left them trailing by 8 runs in the last over. In the end, Zimbabwe did well to tie the match.
5. At the end of the Super Eights stage, Australia was on top with 7 wins from 7 matches, and Sri Lanka were second with 5 wins and 2 losses. New Zealand also had 5 wins and 2 losses, but Sri Lanka's net run rate was higher than New Zealand's 0.25. What was Sri Lanka's net run rate in the Super Eights round?

Answer: 1.48

Net run rate was used to decide the positions of teams with an equal number of points. It was essentially the difference between one team's average run rate and the run rates their opponents achieved against them. If a team was bowled out, then their run rate for the purpose of net run rates would be the amount of runs they scored divided by the number of overs in their innings.

The other net run rates in the Super Eights were: Australia, with 2.40; South Africa, with 0.31; England, with -0.39 (negative 0.39); the West Indies, with -0.57; Bangladesh, with -1.51; and Ireland, with -1.73.
6. Matthew Hayden scored the most runs in the tournament with 659 runs and an average (runs per dismissal) of 73.22. Who had the highest batting average in the tournament?

Answer: Shane Watson

Shane Watson missed four matches in the 2007 Cricket World Cup through a calf injury, but was still in fine form. He had an average of 145, accumulating 145 runs in 6 innings, and only being dismissed once. He also had a phenomenal strike rate of 170.58 runs per 100 balls.

The next highest batting average was New Zealand bowler James Franklin, who was also dismissed only once, and scored 95 runs at an average of 95.

Michael Clarke also had a high average of 87.20, while Jacques Kallis averaged 80.83, and Ricky Ponting had another steady tournament, with 539 runs at an average of 67.37.
7. What was the highest batting partnership in the tournament, and who were the two batsmen?

Answer: 204 runs, Michael Clarke and Brad Hodge

Michael Clarke and Brad Hodge put on 204 runs from just 164 balls for the 4th wicket against the Netherlands, guiding Australia to a grand total of 358. Australia eventually won the match by 229 runs.

India's Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag were close behind, with a 202 run partnership against Bermuda, while Sri Lankans Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene had the third highest partnership with 183 against the West Indies.
8. South African opener AB de Villiers and Irishman Kyle McCallan shared first place for most ducks in the tournament. How many ducks did they each have?

Answer: 4

Irish spinner Kyle McCallan had a batting average of 4.71, having only scored 33 runs in 8 innings, while AB de Villiers had a very rocky tournament, filled with highs and lows. He averaged 37.20 at a strike rate of 100.81. Apart from the four ducks, he also scored two half-centuries, and one massive innings of 146.

Fifteen players shared second place for most ducks, with 2 apiece. On that list were four of McCallan's Irish teammates.
9. Towards the end of the Super Eights stage, West Indian captain Brian Lara announced that he would retire from all international cricket after the World Cup. The great middle-order batsman from Trinidad played his last match for the West Indies against England at Kensington Oval in Barbados. Sent out to bat first, Brian Lara walked out to the pitch to bat for one last time with the score at 131 for 1. How many runs did he score?

Answer: 18

In his final innings in international cricket, Brian Lara was tragically run out by Kevin Pietersen at the non-striker's end when he was involved in a horrible mix-up with Marlon Samuels. He managed only 18 off 17 balls, and left the international stage quietly. The West Indies managed to score 300 runs, but England chased it down with one wicket and one ball to spare.

Brian Lara had 10405 runs in One Day International cricket, and 11953 runs in Test cricket. He retired as the fifth highest run-scorer in ODIs, and the highest run-scorer in Tests. He also held the record for highest individual score in a single innings, with his undefeated quadruple century (400*) against England.
10. Glenn McGrath retired from international cricket after the World Cup. He won the Player of the Tournament award, for his record 26 wickets in the tournament at an average of just 13.73. How many runs did Glenn McGrath concede during Australia's successful World Cup campaign?

Answer: 357

Glenn McGrath finished his illustrious career with 381 ODI wickets at an average of 22.02 and a superb economy rate of just 3.88 runs per over. He also retired as the most successful fast bowler in Test cricket, with 563 wickets at an average of 21.64.

He also held the record for the most World Cup wickets, with a total of 71 wickets from 4 World Cups, and the most wickets in a single World Cup, with 26 wickets from 11 matches at this 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

In his final international match, against Sri Lanka in the World Cup final, he finished his career in his standard fashion, with bowling figures of 7 overs, 1 wicket for 31 runs.
