Answer: Dan van Bunge

Herschelle Gibbs became the first player to achieve the maximum 36 in an over in an international one day match after Sir Garfield Sobers (West Indies) and Ravi Shastri had earlier achieved it in first-class matches. Gibbs hit in all seven 6s and four 4s in his innings of 72 off just 40 balls as South Africa easily beat the Nethlands.

The luckless van Bunge announced he was stepping down from the national side after the tournament.
2. Sri Lankan sling bowler Lasith Malinga took a record four wickets in four balls against South Africa. Who was the first of his four victims?

Answer: Shaun Pollock

Malinga finished with figures of 9.2-0-54-4 as South Africa held on to win by one wicket. He bowled Pollock , had Hall caught by opening batsman Tharanga, Kallis caught by wicketkeeper Sangakkara to complete a hat-trick then with the next ball bowled tail-ender Ntini. All this when South Africa were only four runs short of victory!

Lou Vincent got back into the team only weeks before the World Cup after the unexpected retirement of long-time opener Nathan Astle and arrived as one of the Black Caps' form players. After ducks against England and Kenya and a century againsst Canada, Vincent's wrist was broken by fast bowler Shane Bond, who had already injured team mate Craig McMillan at an earlier training session. Vincent was replaced by Marshall, who only played in two matches.

Scotland also played in 1999, Canada in 2003 and the Netherlands in 1996 and 2003.

Steve Bucknor also officiated in the tournament decider in 1992, 1996, 1999 and 2003. It was Bucknor's 163rd one day match. His one day debut came in 1989. He has also umpired 117 tests. Bucknor was aged 60, while his umpiring partner this time was Pakistani Dar, aged just 37 and standing in his first final. Bowden was fourth umpire while Hair was removed from the elite umpiring panel after the ball-tempering and forfeit scandal at the Oval.
9. Who topped the batting averages after the semi finals?

Answer: James Franklin (New Zealand)

All-rounder James Franklin, who batted No. 9 in most matches, averaged 95 after scoring 95 runs in five innings and only being dismissed once! He had a strike-rate of 98.95. Hayden, the leading run scorer, scored 621 runs at an average of 77.62 prior to the final and Clarke 428 at 85.6. Canadian Dhaniram was ranked third with an average of 81, like Franklin scoring his runs for just once out.
10. Who was the only bowler to finish in the top five on the bowling averages despite his team not reaching the Super 8 stage?

Answer: Iftikhar Anjum (Pakistan)

Anjum finished his three matches with an average of 14.6. He bowled in just two of them, recording figures of 20 - 3 - 73 - 5, with best fugures of 3-44 v West Indies. His economy rate of 3.65 was also impressive.
