Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening scene of this episode showed Ewing patriarch, Jock Ewing, riding horseback across the paddocks toward the main house. Soon after he and his wife, Miss Ellie, discussed how peaceful the ranch was early in the morning. Who played the part of Jock Ewing in this episode?

Answer: Jim Davis

Jim Davis was perfect for the role of Jock Ewing. He was tall and thin with the rugged good looks - those that most often only a life of hard knocks can bestow. Davis was not stranger to a Western saddle, either. He started his work as an actor in the 1940s but much of his work for at least his first ten years was "uncredited". The 50s, 60s and 70s were when Jim Davis made a name for himself in the western genre, both in movies and in television.
2. The peace and quiet of the early morning was quickly interrupted with a flurry of Ewings with their own particular perils as they started their morning routine. Lucy was fuming because she had been thus far denied one luxury she thought should be hers. What was her vehement request?

Answer: She wanted her own car.

We the viewing audience had heard this impassioned plea from Lucy in previous episodes, too. It really hit home to Lucy that she did not have her own car when (in an earlier episode) Bobby had bought Pam a car; an eye-catching, black Corvette, that is. Lucy was determined to convince the other Ewings that it was in consideration of everyone that she should have her own vehicle and the independence it would provide. Of course, her granddaddy was her first target. Miss Ellie quickly reflected that hit with this quote: "You leave him out of this, young lady.

He spoils you rotten as it is".
3. Bobby continued to work constantly to promote and expand his fledgling construction company. During a meeting he learned an older, well-established investment company had expressed interests in expanding - into the Texas market. Where was said to be the corporate headquarters of this "old-time money", as Bobby called it?

Answer: Boston

The idea of a major insurance, mutual funds and investments company building its first southwestern branch in Texas really grabbed Bobby's attention. He began immediately making the plans to show the visitors from Boston that Texas, Dallas AND the Ewing Construction Company were worthy of their consideration.
4. During the evening meal, J.R. told the family it would be necessary for him to be in Washington, D.C. to do some lobbying for the next few days. Sue Ellen was very adamant that she drive J.R. to the airport; which she did. Soon we saw that J.R. was obviously not traveling alone. Who was seated next to him in that first class compartment of the plane?

Answer: An unnamed very young, super sexy blond woman

When Sue Ellen knew J.R. was asleep she made a phone call to let a secret someone know that J.R. was to be gone and to be sure of it she was taking him to the airport. Seemingly unaware of Sue Ellen's delight that he was to be gone, J.R. had (apparently) made some plans of his own.

The pretty blond seated next to J.R. in the commercial liner told him she was looking forward to their trip to Washington. J.R. punctuated his response with that chuckle that we "Dallas" regulars grew to recognize and despise, yet enjoy so much. (Were we to believe a Ewing would fly commercial? Hardly! Maybe, if you ARE trying to hide an affair; what better place to be than with the common people.)
5. Meanwhile at Ewing Oil Company, Bobby and Jock learn the partners of the old money investment firm have accepted the invitation to attend a party at Southfork given in their honor and hoping to procure their business. There is one major caveat. What is that admonition?

Answer: Family is very important to them. They insisted they must meet Bobby's family.

Bobby and Jock (who is substituting as "boss" while J.R. is gone) were told family was very important to the old-line-money company. The ultra-conservative, and well old school investment firm forewarned Bobby and his business associate that family was just as important as his business - especially Bobby's relationship with his wife, Pamela. Bobby was delighted to hear this; he knew Pam would be the most charming, loving and loyal wife anyone could ever want.
6. Pam had made a point of telling the Ewing family that she was "cheap help" (as she described it) thus it was necessary for her to work the long hours of store inventory. This was all about to change. Liz, her boss at the dress shop, promoted her to buyer and told Pam of plans for a very special trip just in time for a big fashion show. Where had Liz planned for Pam to go?

Answer: Paris

Liz surprised Pam with the promotion and asked her if she had a passport. Liz had planned the trip for them to be gone to Paris for several days. Only one problem: The trip directly overlapped the date of Bobby's party at Southfork when he was to entertain his prospective customers from the East. The dilemma was immediately apparent to Pamela but Liz insisted this was a chance of a lifetime.
7. In an attempt to rectify her dilemma Pam tries to convince Bobby to delay the party without telling him about her trip. She uses a wide range of excuses. Bobby only reiterates how important this deal is to the both of them and how important she is to it all. What does Bobby decide to get for Pam as a surprise before the party?

Answer: A new dress

Bobby went to the dress shop and asked Liz to help him select a dress for Pam's very special occasion. Liz assumed Bobby knew of her plans for Pam to go on the buying trip but Bobby really wanted the dress for Pam to wear to his party. Liz proceeded to compliment Bobby on his open-mindedness about Pam's career and Bobby learned of Pam's quandary. Thus, the "Dallas" version of "The Gift of the Magi" began.
8. Sue Ellen mentioned to Pam that she had been feeling a bit queasy for a few days but did not mention that she had made an appointment to see the doctor. Good thing she did, though. Sue Ellen learned she was pregnant by taking a telephone call from the doctor when she returned to the ranch. She was with the Ewing family members when the call came; except J.R. was still on his trip. Who phoned J.R. to tell him the news?

Answer: Jock

Jock phoned J.R. as the other members of the family offered their delight and good wishes to Sue Ellen. Sue Ellen told J.R. how excited everyone was and he told her that he would be on the first flight back to Dallas the next day. Later that evening Bobby and Pam are talking about the news when Bobby says the phrase, "Now that J.R. knows he is going to have the first baby"... Wonder what Bobby considered Lucy?
9. Pamela told Bobby she wanted to talk with him. Instead Bobby wanted to give her a surprise. He had something for her that he wanted her to have before her upcoming trip. As tears filled her eyes, Pamela expressed how perfect the gift was for her. What did Pam tell Bobby that surprised him?

Answer: She had told Liz she could not go on the buying trip.

Reflexive of the episode's title, Bobby and Pam demonstrated their acts of love for each other. Bobby loved Pamela enough to risk the biggest deal of his construction company if she were gone when his potential clients were in town. Pamela loved Bobby enough to pass on the biggest opportunity - thus far - of her career by cancelling her trip to the fashion show.

Their acts of love do seem to be totally unselfish. Such may not be the case for others.
10. J.R. and Sue Ellen share a glass of champagne and a private moment to discuss their baby. J.R. does some quick calculating and questions Sue Ellen about the timeline she has shared with everyone. In what may be one of the best lines of the entire series, how does Sue Ellen explain the paternity of her child?

Answer: "I've been just as faithful to our marriage vows as you have, darling."

The episode obviously pre-dates the universal warning of no alcoholic beverages for those who are pregnant but that is a classic line for this series! And, so well delivered. With her pregnancy, Sue Ellen felt she was finally holding a trump card that she could play any time and every time she wanted. Sue Ellen was about six weeks pregnant.

As fate (and, TV writers) would have it, she and Cliff had just celebrated the time stamp of six weeks since they had begun their affair. In a tender moment Sue Ellen and Cliff talked of her pregnancy and how things would change between them - regardless of whether it was Cliff or J.R. who had provided the effective sperm cell. Just to nit-pick a bit about one scene: J.R. left Dallas (shown at the airport) carrying a garment bag and arrived back at home (shown exiting a commercial taxi) carrying a tote bag. Same color and leather for both but too obvious (to me) that it was two DIFFERENT bags. Were the wardrobe people asleep or on break?
