Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the episode began we saw J.R. and Bobby had (apparently) disregarded their differences long enough for some competition and exercise. What racquet game were they playing at the local club? Hint: It was an indoor court.

Answer: Racquetball

This episode originally aired in February, 1979; at that time racquetball was extremely popular in the U.S.A., especially among those affluent enough to afford membership in the private court clubs. Much could have been said about the opening scene with its obvious competition and that aspect was not lost. Bobby could not "beat" J.R. at home but he could surely give it a try on the court.
2. Pamela was (still) estranged from Bobby - and the Ewings of Southfork - so she concentrated on her work at the department store. Pamela and her boss, Liz, were shown doing something that - in a way - would contribute to the bulk of this episode. What were they doing?

Answer: Overseeing a photography session with a group of three models

Pamela was not ready to return to Southfork although she confessed her love and devotion for Bobby without hesitation. The photography session included three young and, of course, gorgeous models. One of the models was more talkative with Pam than the other two.

It seemed they were friends. When the photography session ended Pam insisted this model, Leanne, go with her to the Racquet Club for some lunch.
3. Pamela became friends with Leanne (Rees) very quickly. The beautiful dark-haired woman who played Leanne in this episode may be familiar to many of us. Her TV appearances spanned more than five decades. After this "Dallas" appearance she starred as Joyce Davenport on "Hill Street Blues" (1981-1987). Who portrayed Leanne?

Answer: Veronica Hamel

As did many tall, thin, beautiful actresses, Veronica Hamel began her professional career as a model. She quickly moved to television and has appeared in more than 50 TV movies or shows since the early 1970s. She was a part of the cast of the award winning "Hill Street Blues" for its entire run. According to imdb.com, Hamel was offered the part of Kelly Garrett on TV's "Charlie's Angels" (1976-1981). That part was played by Jaclyn Smith.
4. J.R. was shown playing another game of the same sport at the racquet club but with a different opponent this second time. His opponent was Ben Maxwell. Mr. Maxwell was very powerful in Dallas. What was his title/office?

Answer: Head of the OLM

We "Dallas" fans had been introduced to Ben Maxwell in previous episodes as the Head of the OLM (Office of Land Management). Maxwell had been responsible for procuring the appointment as Director of the OLM for Cliff Barnes. This association was enough to cause friction with J.R. alone but there was even more. Maxwell was determined to retard the growth of independent oil companies in Texas and he was happy to allow Cliff to do the same. J.R. wanted Maxwell out of the OLM and he would do whatever necessary to remove him but J.R. had his challenges - Maxwell was described as "squeaky clean".
5. Pam and Leanne began to talk of sharing an apartment, even if temporarily. J.R. spotted Pam and Leanne together and unfortunately J.R. recognized Leanne as someone with whom he had done some business. What was Leanne's previous line of work that allowed J.R. to recognize her?

Answer: Call girl (Prostitute)

We learned Leanne had worked as a call girl and she had used the name Amber when J.R. had first met her. Since then she had become a mother to her four year old daughter and was determined to make a "new life" for herself - as she told J.R. Leanne destroyed the money J.R. offered her and told him she would not work for him. Typical J.R., he was not about to take "no" for an answer.

He threatened to have her daughter removed from her care and (then later) he called an officer on the Dallas police force and asked that vice officer to remind Leanne "who she is and who her friends are". All this unbeknownst to Pamela who decided to share the apartment with Leanne.
6. Bobby and Ray had learned of recent cattle theft from Southfork. The two of them decided the best way to learn who may be involved with this theft was to visit some "cowboy bars" and try to get some of the local wranglers to talk with them. At one such bar they met a young man who they recognized. What was his last name?

Answer: Mainwaring

Bobby and Ray joined the mêlée that Kit Mainwaring started in the bar. Bobby was curious why Kit was there at all. Kit told Bobby he was there doing the same thing that the two of them were doing. Bobby invited Kit to come to Southfork the next morning and further join forces to stop the cow rustling.

In the same evening, J.R. and Sue Ellen argued because she was too drunk to join the family for dinner, Bobby and Ray were involved in a brawl at a local saloon and Leanne returned to her apartment after being "arrested" (this arrest was a farce) by J.R.'s friend on the police force to find J.R. waiting for her in her apartment.
7. Leanne executed her plan (J.R.'s plan!) perfectly. She met Ben Maxwell at the racquet club and spent the day with him. What did she plan to do once she convinced Ben to join her "for a nightcap" in her apartment?

Answer: Photograph Maxwell, Pam, and herself in an embarrassing pose

Leanne knew Pam should be in bed asleep by the time she and Ben Maxwell entered her apartment. She knew Maxwell was very drunk - drunk enough to be manipulated, that is. J.R. and Leanne had a photographer situated to snap photos of Leanne and Ben Maxwell as they (both) stumbled into Pamela's bedroom and landed on her bed as she was suddenly awakened.

The photographer got the shots he needed and made sure the local newspaper ran the scene on its front page.
8. J.R. delighted in sharing the front page story titled "Financier In Love Nest" with the entire Ewing family at their breakfast on the Southfork patio. A photo of Pam, Leanne and Maxwell accompanied the story. Bobby was very upset, to say the least. What did Jock say to J.R. as that scene ended?

Answer: J.R., if I find out you had anything to do with this I'll kick your tail over to the next county, do you hear?

Each member of the Ewing family seemed to have a different concern and, thus, reaction to the newspaper article. Miss Ellie was not convinced it was valid. Lucy was sad to see such a damaging scandal about her family. Sue Ellen used it to belittle Pam in hopes of gaining favor with the family. J.R. and Jock discussed the business aspect of Maxwell's now tattered reputation. Bobby knew instantly that J.R. had (somehow) arranged the entire incident and that J.R. was just too overjoyed with its effects.

After Bobby swung a few punches at J.R. he left the ranch in a hurry. J.R.'s comeback comment to Jock ("There's no sense in looking a gift horse in the mouth, Dad.") was more of an acknowledgement than an apology.
9. The morning after her date with Maxwell Leanne told Pam she was leaving Dallas and punctuated it with a tearful apology. All part of J.R.'s deal with her (Leanne). But everything did not go according to plan for J.R. He called a meeting with some top brass from other oil companies to discuss something Cliff had long stymied for Ewing Oil. What was that?

Answer: Placing an oil refinery on the Gulf Coast of Texas

J.R. felt it would take Ewing Oil from a small independent oil company in Texas to a huge international company IF he could get a refinery situated in a most advantageous place. Cliff had used his position - in the OLM - to quell any efforts J.R. made to get that Gulf Coast refinery.

The three oil executives wasted no time telling J.R. that even though Maxwell may be disgraced and out of his position it was Cliff Barnes who still had the power over J.R./Ewing Oil when it came to issues about oil refineries.

Not what J.R. wanted to hear.
10. Bobby imagined Pam had to be devastated by the fabricated scandal; he went to Leanne's apartment to find her. Pam was packed and ready to leave Dallas rather than explain to family, friends and co-workers. Bobby convinced her to fight it rather than run from it. He wanted her to move back to Southfork and be with family. She agreed and they arrived there together. Who was the last member of the Ewing family to notice her return?

Answer: J.R.

This scene is one of the best of the entire series! All of the actors portrayed their parts to the utmost. Sue Ellen was perfectly acerbic with drink in hand as she spewed her cutting comment: "Pamela, I don't know how you have the nerve to show your face around here." Miss Ellie, Jock and Lucy were genuinely glad to have Pam back at Southfork even if they wanted as much, or more, for Bobby than for Pam. Pam and Bobby were almost giddy as each of them wore devious grins because they knew J.R. would NOT be happy. J.R.'s look was somewhere between astonishment and disgust when an out-of-sight Pam announced "I'm starving" and was ready to join the family for dinner; it was wonderful.

The best of all was when Bobby gave J.R. a big ol' brotherly hug and said, "You know, J.R., funny thing happened when Pamela and I saw that picture of her in the morning paper; made us realize just how much we really needed one another. I'd sure like to know who to thank for that." Which was answered with another completely baffled look from J.R. as the episode ended. Good stuff!
