Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Dr. Torrence find eating the animal in the Costa Rican forest?

Answer: vultures

He shooed off the birds before examining the body of what looked like a small elephant. When he pushed the boil, it exploded on his face. That night, Torrence called in a distress signal, but he was already dead when help came the next morning.
2. What crime had the escaped prisoners committed?

Answer: murder

The men had escaped in the laundry cart. Mulder commented wryly that the prison guards didn't watch enough prison movies. Scully and Mulder were sent in to help with the situation, but thought it odd because the FBI didn't usually get involved in that sort of thing.

The Federal Marshals on the hunt were equally confused. While Mulder tagged along with the Marshals, Scully used her medical background and FBI credentials to force her way into the quarantined area so as to figure out what was really going on.
3. Talking to Mulder on the phone, how long did Scully say the infected men were lasting before death?

Answer: 36 hours

Scully told Mulder that the prison seemed to be wracked by a deadly contagion. When Mulder asked how deadly, Scully replied, "36 hours after infection deadly."
4. Where did the gas station attendant find the infected fugitive?

Answer: gas station bathroom

The attendant had been watching the camper sit at the pump for a while and eventually went out to check on it. When he didn't find anyone in the camper, he checked the bathroom and found the fugitive crumpled on the floor with boils on his face. Before the attendant could do anything, though, the second fugitive came up behind him and hit him over the head.
5. Who was behind the quarantine at the prison?

Answer: Pinck Pharmaceuticals

The doctors at the prison originally claimed to be from the CDC, but when Dr. Osborn found he'd been infected, he pulled Scully into a lab and told her that they were actually from Pinck Pharmaceuticals and that they had been researching a new drug when the contagion had broken out.
6. After meeting with Skinner and the Cigarette-Smoking Man, Mulder wanted to make the information they had about the contagion public.

Answer: True

On the phone with Scully, Mulder told her to collect the information so they could start informing the public. Scully resisted against leaking the information so soon, and Mulder protested, "What if someone dies because we withheld what we knew?" Scully replied with equal vehemence, "What if someone dies because we didn't? There'll be a time for the truth, Mulder, but this isn't it." That seemed to finally get through, and Mulder changed the subject to ask about Scully's welfare in the locked-down prison.
7. Where was Paul, the second fugitive, going?

Answer: Toronto

He was taking a Greyhound bus to Toronto, but the Marshals caught up with him in time.
8. Scully was infected.

Answer: false

She tested her blood with the help of Dr. Osborn and found that she had not been infected. Before she could do anything, though, the team from Pinck Pharmaceuticals had destroyed all the evidence at the prison.
9. Paul told Mulder what was in the package Robert Torrence received.

Answer: false

Before he could tell him, one of the agents shot Paul through the bus window.
10. What did the scientist in the Costa Rica forest have in common with the prisoner who first contracted the infection?

Answer: same name

Scully and Mulder realized that Pinck Pharmaceuticals had planned that as their fail-safe; even if the agents figured out the truth of what had happened (the company evading federal regulations to use prisoners as guinea pigs), Pinck could blame it on a simple postal error.
