In an effort to alter the domino effect and chain of events that led to the crash of Oceanic Flight 815, Daniel has returned to the same time period, in which most of the other survivors find themselves. Miles says, "Dan? Once you left for Ann Arbor, I figured you'd gotten rich, invented the DVD or something." Daniel shows Miles the photograph of the Oceanic Six in 1977. It's Dan's quest to alter the past.

Daniel's mother is intent upon Daniel focusing on his ability with mental acuity. At this age, Daniel displays a remarkable memory. He can recount the exact number of metronome beats, during a piano recital. Even so, she says that this is not important.

Suddenly intrigued, Daniel's mother inquires as to the source of the grant.

She expresses genuine surprise to learn that Charles Widmore is the benefactor.

Charles says, "I want to send you to the Island. It will further your research, show you things you'd never dream of. But more importantly, it will heal you, Daniel...your mind, your memory."

However, Juliet gives Daniel the code to the sonar fence, which would allow him to enter the Hostile territory.
