This marked the first birthday since the series began that Buffy herself was not markedly hurt in some way, either physically or emotionally. Now, if Giles had been killed or lost inside the demon forever, that wouldn't have been the case. In season two she lost Angel on/around her birthdate, in season three she was tested by the Watcher's Council, and finally in season four she was just the hero of the piece.
