James Marsters, born in Greenville, California, started to act when he was nine years old. He played the part of Eeyore in his school's theatrical performance of "Winnie the Pooh." In the episode 'School Hard,' Spike comes to Sunnydale. His first scene is at the end of the teaser. His car runs over the welcome sign, he steps out of the car, and says "Home sweet home." Later in 'Lover's Walk,' Spike will repeat this epic scene in a more comedic fashion while he is drunk.

When Spike first comes to Sunnydale, we meet Drusilla. The dark haired woman who is child-like in her actions and whose speech is frightening. Her devotion to Spike flickers, however, when Angel comes back into the fold. The last we see of her in season two is with Spike in his car, leaving the country for good ... or so we think ...

In the season five episode 'Crush,' we discover the true reason behind Spike's HUMAN nickname "William the Bloody." We had thought that this was a reference to his brutal killing methods he used on his victims, until this episode where we view his past. We see that this nickname was given to him when he was still human because of the awful poetry he wrote for his obsession, Cecily.

After Spike escapes from the Initiative, he is unaware of the chip that has been implanted into his brain. He goes to Buffy's dorm room to kill her and finds Willow, but not Buffy. He tries to bite her several times, until he realizes that something is wrong.

In 'Halloween,' Spike watches a video in his lair of Buffy fighting a vampire. He is studying her methods so that he can kill her. When she uses a sign post to stake the vampire, Spike comments that she's resourceful because she doesn't even need to use a traditional stake at all times.

In this episode, Spike comes to the gang for help, begging them for blood after finally realizing that he is unable to hunt on his own. Buffy doesn't trust him and ties him to a chair, just in case he is lying. During the fight scene with the Chumash spirits, Buffy stabs the leader, causing him to turn into a bear. Spike becomes very alarmed and yells at Buffy to undo it.

In 'The Gift,' the Scoobies are brainstorming for ideas and methods to defeat Glory. When Xander and Anya are giving Buffy an idea, Spike walks over and Xander states that he is a good bowler, to which Anya backs him up. Spike then says, "The gods themselves do tremble." His sarcastic remark causes a flicker of emotion in Xander, which he holds back.

Spike becomes very depressed and suicidal in this episode due to his "condition". When he and the Scoobies are at the destroyed Sunnydale High to stop the apocalypse (once again), he punches a demon and clutches his head expecting pain. When the pain doesn't come, he tries again and becomes very happy when he makes his glorious discovery.

In season seven, the First uses Spike as a killing machine. It placed a trigger in his brain in order to control him. When Spike finds out the name of the song (Early One Morning), he tells Buffy and the others that it was a song his mother sang to him when he was still human.
