Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Catterick" was written by and starred the well know double act of Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. It also featured a host of other well known faces from the British television comedy scene. Who, from the following, did NOT appear in "Catterick"?

Answer: Paul Whitehouse

Charlie Higson appears as Pat the Barman. Charlie is best known for his work on "The Fast Show" (and its spin-off series "Swiss Toni").
Reece Shearsmith appears as Tony. Reece is best known for his work on the darkly funny comedy "The League of Gentlemen".
Morwenna Banks appears as Tess. Morwenna is best known for her work on the Channel 4 comedy "Absolutely".
2. The main characters are brothers Carl and Chris. They drink at the local pub with some friends. One of these friends is Ian, who always complains that his wife is cold. We eventually find out why. What is the reason?

Answer: She's been dead for nine months

We find out that doctors tell Ian she's been dead for nine months (not that he believes them). Ian believes that she really died on the way to the hospital because of the bumpy ride.
3. What is the correct spelling of the four crown hotel where Chris and Carl stay and where Mark and Tess work?

Answer: The Mermade Hotel

The Mermade Hotel is run by manager Roy Oates and is a four crown hotel (five crowns would be too much for Chris, who believes a man can suffocate in so much luxury).
4. How many characters did Matt Lucas play throughout the series?

Answer: 3

Matt Lucas is well known for his ability to play all sorts of weird and wonderful characters (a talent he displays in his sketch show "Little Britain") and in "Catterick" he plays three very different characters: Roy Oates (Mermade Hotel manager), Webster (DI Fowler's partner) and Dan, Dan, The Shellfish Man.
5. Whilst Carl, Chris and Mark are out looking for Carl's son, Chris goes to pick some fruit for them to eat. He comes back with a lot of one particular fruit. What has he picked for them?

Answer: Gooseberries

Carl is not overly impressed by Chris' findings but decides to give them a go after Chris notes that "gooseberries are just English grapes".
They continue to eat the gooseberries whilst having a deep and meaningful conversation through their twisted faces (due to the taste of the fruit).
6. At one point, we find out Chris has ripped a poster of his favourite celebrity in half. This is seen as outrageous behaviour by Carl, Mark and even Tony (who finds the torn poster sickening). Who is the celebrity?

Answer: George Clooney

Chris was angry when George left the cast of American hospital drama "E.R." and ripped the poster. Carl pretends to ring George to tell him about the incident, though when he accidently rings room service he orders fried eggs on toast. Chris, still thinking his brother had actually rang George Clooney, asks why George is sending them eggs after he ripped the poster. Carl explains it's because "he's a decent bloke" and "he doesn't bear a grudge".
7. When Carl first arrives in Northallerton, he and Chris go for a drink in the pub where their friends are regulars. What is the name of the pub and what food does Pat the Barman regularly try to sell his customers?

Answer: Siberian Khatru and Spatchcock

The pub is called "Siberian Khatru" which is presumably named after the song by progressive rock band "Yes".
"Ummagumma" is an album by Pink Floyd, "Abacab" is an album by Genesis and "Tormato" and album by "Yes".
Spatchcock is a type of flattened chicken. In "Catterick", Pat the Barman flattens his with his van
Guinea Pig is a commonly eaten meat in parts of South America, though it is best known as a domesticated pet.
Moth Sandwiches appeared in the BBC satire "Look Around You".
Turducken is a dish consisting of a duck stuffed with a chicken which is then stuffed into a turkey; essentially a chicken in a duck in a turkey.
8. When Tony breaks into Chris' house, he is taken by surprise when Chris' pet turkey appears wearing a cardboard box.

Answer: True

Thinking the house is empty, Tony is quite surprised when a turkey walks into the room, especially seeing as it appears to be wearing a cardboard box. The turkey meets its end as Tony decides to shoot it with his pistol.
9. During a big showdown at the garden centre, Carl attempts to make a bomb using standard gardening equipment. Where did he learn to do this?

Answer: He saw it on "The A-Team"

Carl takes a small plantpot and adds 200g of slug pellets, 3 kapok (chewed and distressed), 200g of powdered weedkiller, 2 scoops of compost and a lit cigarette.
Needless to say, the "bomb" doesn't work at all and simply smashes on the ground.
10. At the end of the series we discover that the antagonist (Tony) is actually Carl's son (Paul). What explanation is given for the change of names?

Answer: His name is Paul Anthony

When Chris finds pictures of Tony in Carl's ex-wife's house, he asks if they are pictures of Paul. Carl's ex-wife Judy explains that his name is Paul Anthony and he's been called Tony since he was young.
Chris decides not to tell Carl that Tony is his soon, especially seeing as Carl has just murdered him (albeit in self defence).
