Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For the first Detour of the race, teams needed to complete tasks in Sao Paolo, Brazil. How many teams completed the 'Motor Head' task?

Answer: Two

In Sao Paolo, Brazil, teams inevitably made their way to Viaduto Santa Efigenia in the heart of the downtown area of the city. Here, they found their Detour task, a choice between 'Motor Head' and 'Rotor Head'. In 'Motor Head', teams needed to travel one mile to a nearby motorcycle shop, pick a frame, and assemble a bike using the tools provided and an example. Once the bike could be kickstarted, they would receive their next clue. Only Ray and Yolanda and Lake and Michelle finished this task.

In 'Rotor Head', teams took a drive to an airport three miles away, took off in helicopters, and located one of three buildings listed for them in a guide. Once they picked and located their building, they had to land on top and search a designated area for their next clue.

The remaining nine teams finished this one. After the Detour, teams headed to a residence in Santa Cecilia for their next clue.
2. In Leg 2, some teams completed the 'Press It' Detour task in Brazil. What did they need to press?

Answer: Sugar cane to make ethanol

In Leg 2, teams found their Detour in the town of Brotas in Brazil. Upon reaching their Volkswagen Beetles at the bus terminal in Brotas, they found their Detour task, a choice between 'Press It' and 'Climb It'. In 'Press It', teams needed to drive to Campina Bela Vista and crush fifteen stalks of sugar cane into their distilled juices.

They would then need to create half a liter of ethanol, then fill their car's gas tank with it to receive their clue and carry on. In 'Climb It', teams traveled to Usina do Jacare, and using ascenders team members needed to climb ninety feet into a waterfall. Dave and Lori, Wanda and Desiree, and Lisa and Joni completed 'Press It' while the others took 'Climb It'.

After the Detour, teams went to the Pit Stop at Fazenda Primavera da Serra in Brotas.
3. In the first half of Leg 3, racers chose between 'Scrub' and 'Scour'. What did they need to clean in 'Scrub'?

Answer: Bus

Arriving at Novodevichiy Monastery, racers located their third Detour clue of the race: 'Scour' and 'Scrub'. In 'Scour', attempted by Ray and Yolanda, Eric and Jeremy, Fran and Barry, Lake and Michelle, and BJ and Tyler, teams needed to visit Dubrovka Theatre and search through over one thousand Russian nesting dolls for one of only a few containing a tiny clue. 'Scrub', completed by Wanda and Desiree, Dave and Lori, Dani and Danielle, and Joseph and Monica, involved finding a trolley park where they had to scrub and wash an entire trolley bus, inside and out, to claim their clue.

After the Detour, teams met with Phil at Moscow's Red Square to find that the leg was not quite over.
4. As Leg 3 continued into Germany, how many team members completed the 'Slap It' detour task in which they learned a specific dance?

Answer: Five

In the second half of Leg 3, racers made their way to the Bavaria Film Studios in Grünwald. Here, a choice between 'Break It' and 'Slap It' was proposed. In 'Slap It', teams needed to learn the steps in a specific German dance and properly perform it to complete their task. Fran and Barry, Joseph and Monica, Ray and Yolanda, Dani and Danielle, and Wanda and Desiree completed it and received their clue. 'Break It', a more popular task (completed by all other racers) involved smashing bottles on each others' heads only after the cuckoo of a clock until they found one with the word 'Prost' on the label. All teams needed to wear lederhosen during their task.

After the Detour, teams found their way to the Pit Stop at the Siegestor in Munich.
5. In Leg 4 (in Italy), teams that chose the 'Laundry' option had to wash clothing.

Answer: False

In Leg 4, teams found the Detour clue in Castellammare del Golfo on the island of Sicily. Here, teams chose between 'Laundry', a task which required that teams search from over two thousand articles of clothing for one of sixteen containing a red and yellow tag, or 'Foundry', in which teams needed to carry a 50kg. bell of iron to a vehicle, then drive it to a specific destination.

While Joseph and Monica and Ray and Yolanda carried the bell in 'Foundry', the remaining teams took down their 'Laundry'.

After this, teams headed to Teatro di Segesta in the city of Segesta to find their next clue.
6. In Leg 6, teams chose between 'Herculean Effort' and 'It's All Greek To Me'. Which team completed 'It's All Greek To Me'?

Answer: Lake and Michelle

In Leg 6, teams headed to Greece to complete some daring tasks and historical events. Arriving at the ancient stadium in Nemea, teams who chose 'Herculean Effort' needed to partake in three different Greek events from the Olympics. One member needed to toss a discus a certain distance, the other member needed to hurl a javelin a certain distance, then both needed to wrestle opponents in a wrestling ring to receive their clue. Teams completing 'It's All Greek To Me' searched a dig site for nine pieces of pottery to rearrange, translate, and spell out a city on their map: Dimitsana. Fran and Barry and Lake and Michelle completed this task while the other teams completed 'Herculean Effort'. Eric and Jeremy claimed the Fast Forward clue and did neither choice.

After the Detour, teams went to the Pit Stop, the Fortress of Rion.
7. In which country did teams complete either the 'Camel' or 'Watchtower' tasks in Leg 7?

Answer: Oman

In Leg 7, teams made their way to Muscat, Oman for their tasks. In the town of Sur, at the Baith Al Battha, teams located the Detour, a choice between 'Camel' and 'Watchtower'. In 'Camel' (completed by Eric and Jeremy, Joseph and Monica, and Ray and Yolanda), teams needed to travel by ferry across a river to lift a camel into a truck (using a winch), then drive it to a Bedouin camp.

In 'Watchtower' (completed by BJ and Tyler and Fran and Barry), teams needed to go to specific watchtowers across the river to find one containing a scroll.

Then they needed to bring the scroll to a silver shop to receive their next clue. After the Detour, teams went to Al Hawiyah to tackle their Road Block task.
8. In Leg 9 in Australia, teams chose between 'Wet' and what other Detour choice?

Answer: Dry

Heading from Australia's Western Coast to Darwin in the northern end of the country, teams found the Detour task just outside the city of Batchelor. In 'Wet', teams needed to go to Buley Rockhole in Litchfield National Park to hike, then swim a mile down river to receive their next clue.

In 'Dry', teams instead needed to travel to Litchfield National Park's Lost City. Here, teams obtained a didgeridoo and followed the sound of other didgeridoos nearby to match theirs with one in possession of an Aboriginal. Once that team member played a note on the didgeridoo, they received their clue.

After the Detour, teams headed to the Pit Stop, Lake Bennett Wilderness Resort. BJ and Tyler and Eric and Jeremy completed 'Wet' while Ray and Yolanda and Joseph and Monica finished 'Dry'.
9. In Leg 11, teams needed to complete either 'Maiden' or 'Messenger' in Japan. In 'Messenger', how many packages did teams need to deliver?

Answer: Two

In Tokyo, Japan, teams needed to find the statue of Hachikô at Shibuya Station for their Detour, a choice between 'Maiden' and 'Messenger'. In 'Messenger', teams needed to head to Sankusu Street to construct a folding bicycle, then they had to deliver two packages, one to two different buildings in the Shibuya area, to receive their clue.

In 'Maiden', teams needed to find Hamarikyu Gardens and carry a large containing apparatus known as a palanquin a third of a mile to a pavilion. When they arrived, a maiden inside would hand them their next clue. BJ and Tyler completed 'Messenger' while Eric and Jeremy and Ray and Yolanda completed 'Maiden'.

After the Detour, teams found their way to Capsule Land Hotel for an overnight sleep.
10. Because of weather issues in Leg 12, teams were unable to participate in which Alaskan Detour task?

Answer: 'Deliver It'

Arriving in Anchorage, teams headed to Mirror Lake for their final Detour task. In this Detour, teams needed to choose between either 'Drill It' or 'Deliver It'. In all fairness, teams would be unable to deliver anything because of inclement weather; the 'Deliver It' task required that teams load a plane with supplies and fly 75 miles to drop it off. All three remaining teams finished 'Drill It' in which they needed to drill ten holes in the ice, then push a fishing hut over at least two of them to receive their clue.

After this, teams drove to Kincaid Park and eventually flew back to Denver, Colorado, their final destination city.
