Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does Harold create his family?

Answer: In his basement

The story begins with an active cul de sac. Outside, the weather is warm and kids play in the street. Sprinkler systems dot the lawns all down the sides and a mailman delivers the post to each individual mailbox. The real story is inside a house near the center of the street though as a single man, Harold, pours acidic chemicals into a pitcher and pours it onto the corpse of an elderly man as he listens to religious music.

As he finishes melting the flesh from his victim, the alarm clock rings and he goes to get the mail and eat his lunch.

As Harold walks outside, he finds that a couple has moved into a nearby house. They both wave to each other in acknowledgment. When Harold goes back inside, he makes his meal and heads upstairs to find a young girl and a woman watching TV.

As they begin a conversation, it is revealed that the two are actually skeletons, and that Harold had been talking to no one at all. He goes on to say that 'Grandpa' will be with them very shortly as the process is taking less time than he anticipated.
2. What do Celia and David crash their car into?

Answer: A mailbox

The couple that Harold saw earlier, David and Celia, are certainly moving into their new house. David is tense about the move as the couple thought it would be a new start for them, but he still remains nervous about the whole thing. Celia tells him not to be so uptight about it and they decide to get a drink and go for a bite to eat nearby. On the way home, both are quite groggy from their drinks and the long day of moving.

After Celia tells David that everything will be fine after they're done the move, David drives into Harold's large, brick mailbox at the end of his driveway.

The two laugh about it and David leaves his insurance information. As he walks to the door, Celia thinks that she hears something. It turns out to be Harold, watching from the corner of his house.

He remains in the dark and isn't seen. Celia and David make their way home, merely two houses over, and fail to notice a skull amongst the damages.
3. Harold tells David and Celia that he has always been a bachelor.

Answer: True

The next morning, David and Celia look outside to find Harold's mailbox completely restored. They decide to introduce themselves and apologize for the inconvenience with the mailbox and Harold invites them in for a pot of coffee. When Celia asks if Harold's wife did the beautiful decorating in his house, Harold mentions that he's always been an old bachelor, but he took the reins on his decor. Celia asks what line of work Harold is in and he mentions that he's a sort of salesman, but it's hard to explain.

He develops an odd, exotic plastic film to coat hunting and fishing licenses, and although it's an obscure job, it allows him to work out of his house. Celia agrees with him, saying that it's great to work from home since she's an investigative reporter. David says that he's an ER doctor and that he's taking time off work before starting at the nearby Westfall Hospital. Harold compliments David, saying he must have been very young going into medical school, and David laughs it off.
4. Where did David and Celia move from?

Answer: California

Harold asks why the couple moved from California, and assumes that it must've been family, but Celia states that their parents had both passed on, but they wanted to start their own family. She then asks Harold how he knew they were from California, since they never mentioned it earlier. Harold claims he saw their license plates, and that he once lived near Los Angeles himself.

After he says this, Celia tells Harold that she's not satisfied emotionally or sexually. Harold is taken aback by this, but soon realizes that he heard it in his head, as she really asked about where he came from in Los Angeles instead.

They soon realize that they lived within a short distance of each other before Celia once again makes sexual comments to Harold.

He has her say what she said again and he realizes that she was once again apologizing for the mailbox instead. He claims that he had some bricks and mortar laying around and fixed it himself, and the couple invites him over for dinner once their settled in before leaving. Later that day, Harold finishes work on "Grandpa", using wire to tie his cleaned bones together.
5. What is the name of Harold's skeleton wife?

Answer: Jane

After finishing "Grandpa", he places the skeleton into the family room with the rest of his family. The daughter and Grandpa proceed to read a book with each other while Harold and his skeleton wife, Jane, have a talk about what happened. Jane feels that Harold is going to try and add Celia to the family despite the fact that they live too close-by for him to perform such a risky maneuver. Harold also thinks that David saw the bones the previous night when he hit the mailbox, but Jane says that he was probably too drunk and it was too dark to see anything, and if he had seen, he would've gone to the police before having a friendly chat over coffee and apologizing.

The daughter tells Harold that he promised that Grandma would stay with them too, and Harold says that he knows, but he and Jane were talking about something else with Celia there. Harold claims that Jane is being too jealous before settling in to read the paper.
6. From where does Harold follow his grandmother victim?

Answer: The supermarket

The following day, Harold stakes out the local supermarket and finds his next victim, an elderly woman. She has a bag boy carry her groceries to her car and then drives home. She doesn't notice Harold following her, and as she makes her way to her groceries as she arrives home, Harold asks if she is Mrs. Chase, living at her house.

She claims that it isn't her name, but he has the right address. Harold claims that he works for an insurance company, and he was sent out to discuss a contract, but he was given the wrong address.

As he's about to leave, he asks if he can help with the groceries, and as they make their way into the woman's house, he looks to make sure the coast is clear and locks the door. He later drives her to his house after he murders her. David finishes replacing the toilet seats in the new house before going to the bedroom and he finds Celia lying in bed, beckoning him to be with her.

He tells her that it's not the right time yet to try having another child after what happened.

She says that he told her to go off the pill, but he says that he may be having second thoughts. They both go to bed.
7. Celia and David previously had a daughter.

Answer: True

The following day, Celia goes to Harold's house, and she inadvertently ends up interrupting Harold, who's spending time washing the flesh off his new mother in his basement. As she decides to leave, he finally reaches the front door and Celia asks him if he would like to join her and David for dinner that Friday night.

While Harold makes up his mind, he ignores the yelling of Jane in the background, and he agrees to come over. When he goes back inside, he yells at Jane for embarrassing him. That Friday, he arrives for dinner and goes on a small tour of their house.

When they reach the kitchen, David pours the three of them a glass of wine. oddly, Harold asks if he can check into their basement to compare it to his own, but David says that they don't have any lights in there; they all burnt out.

They go into the dining room for dinner. After a while, David and Celia are a bit tipsy over the wine and Harold is talking about why he moved back to Wisconsin. After a while, Celia tells Harold that her and David have been trying to have more children, and moved to Wisconsin for that reason.

Their first daughter died of cancer in California. After dinner, Harold departs, but rather than go home, he sneaks around the side of the house to the bedroom window and watches as Celia and David argue and undress. Soon though, David looks to the window and Harold is nearly seen. Harold goes home to an angry wife, who stayed up all night drinking wine and awaiting his return.
8. What happens when Harold tries to abduct his 'big sister' family member?

Answer: He gets into a car accident

Harold and Jane argue for a bit as Jane feels that Harold is going to replace her with Celia, like he did with his first fling when Jane came into the picture. Her bones are in his mailbox now. Before Harold is about to get angry with Jane, his 'daughter' walks into the doorway and asks why her 'parents' are so angry. Jane says that Harold doesn't love them anymore and he's going to replace them, but Harold says that she's nuts for thinking so.

He takes the girl and brings her to bed. The girl asks Harold if it's true and he says that it couldn't be further from the truth.

She tells Harold that she wants a sister and he says it's a good idea. He says that he'll find her a big sister as soon as he can before he falls asleep in her bed. The next day, Harold stakes out a local high school and listens to his own thoughts as to what the girls are saying to him.

He finds one who tells him that she'd be an easy catch and that no one would miss her if she was taken, so he follows her to her neighbourhood.

As he slowly follows her down the street, he fails to notice a truck backing out of the driveway and it crashes into the driver's side of the car. Although he only sustains a minor injury, he goes to the hospital and David decides to check on him, having just got his new job in the ER.
9. How long after David's disappearance does Harold wait before inviting Celia over for dinner?

Answer: One week

That night, David tells Celia that he's ready to give the baby another try. The two of them agree. The following morning, Harold watches from his house and speaks with his new 'mother' about Celia. He says that she would be happier with him since he can show her the family that she deserves. His mother tells him to follow his heart. The next day, the cops show up at Celia and David's house. After they leave, Harold visits Celia, who tells Harold that David has been missing since the prior morning. She gave a statement to the police, but they think that he left her. She says that he wouldn't have done that.
When Harold goes home, he pulls Jane into the basement. Jane says that she's been waiting for this moment, and that now that he's killed David, he'll replace her with Celia. Harold says that he never touched David; he left on his own accord, but he throws Jane to the ground anyways and smashes her skull with a hammer.
One week later, Harold goes back to visit Celia. She says that she hasn't left the house because she's been waiting for a call from the police. Harold tells her to take a long shower and come over for dinner that night to keep her mind off things and tells her to bring her cell phone so she doesn't miss anything. He prepares with immense detail, cooking the food, cutting flowers, and preparing for the big date. Before she arrives, he sets up the three remaining members of his family in the family room doorway.
10. Did David leave Celia?

Answer: No

During dinner, Harold mentions that Celia is very quiet as opposed to interrogative, and she says that she can't help wonder about David. Harold quickly tells her not to talk about David during the dinner, and says that it'll only upset her while she's trying to eat. Harold makes another harsh comment and Celia tells him that she doesn't have much of an appetite in the situation before saying that she should get going.

He convinces her to stay for dessert, but she decides to have a cigarette on the back porch instead.

When she returns, she asks him for the grand tour of his house, which he promised earlier. He immediately takes her to the family room upstairs and she comes face to face with the skeletons of his 'family'. He quickly gets a rope around her neck and she kicks at him to escape.

They fight into the hallway before Celia makes a run for the back porch. She finds it locked and runs back into Harold's arms. As he strangles her into the living room, he tells her that he'll take such good care of her, but before he can finish the job, he's given a dose of choloroform from behind, and David saves Celia from her death. Celia tells David that he was supposed to leave the back door unlocked, but he says that he decided to take him inside since it was safer. Celia tells him that the girl is upstairs in her green dress, and it is shown that the girl that was in Harold's family was the daughter that they lost. Harold wakes up in Celia and David's basement.

They tell him that Celia tracked him down, and that he ended up killing their daughter. They show him a picture of their family and he realizes who he's been dealing with. David tells Harold that he'll be experiencing the pain he's caused to his victims before they kill him, and that they were never violent people until he took their daughter away. Celia also says that from day one, everything was planned, including hitting the mailbox, and that the police came because they reported trespassers lurking in the bushes; they never filed a missing persons report. They proceed to torture Harold before deciding that they're ready to restart their family.
