Answer: Salvo

Salvo is a popular name in Italy, it can mean 'safe' or 'saved'. True to his name, Salvo Montalbano is a (usually) honest Sicilian cop. He doesn't take bribes, even when the Mafia pressure him, but he does occasionally turn a blind eye when it is clear justice will not be done if he does not.

Answer: Augello

Vice-Commissario Domenico Augello was something of a ladies man, to the envy (or disgust) of his colleagues, but when he meets his wife-to-be, he falls instantly in love and all the others are forgotten.
3. In what fictional Sicilian town is the Montalbano series set?

Answer: Vigata

Vigata is in the fictional district of Montelusa and these are based on author, Andrea Camilleri's home town of Porto Empedocle, a southwestern coastal town in Sicily. When the Inspector Montalbano novels and then TV series became popular, the town decided to rename itself Porto Empedocle Vigata.

Catarella is a much-loved character in the series, renown for his bumbling mistakes and getting names hilariously wrong, he nevertheless has an endearing personality.

In spite of living in the northern Italian town of Genoa, Livia is happy to fly to Sicily whenever she is free. She and Salvo have a tempestuous relationship, mainly due to the fact that on far too many occasions, he has stood her up after she's flown down to Vigata especially to be with him. Livia has several times in their 8-9 year relationship hinted at marriage, but in spite of their love for one another, Salvo avoids this last step of commitment.
6. Who plays Montalbano in the TV series?

Answer: Luca Zingaretti

Having graduated from the National Academy of Dramatic Art Silvio D' Amico, in 1984, Luca Zingaretti had a varied career in the theatre, television and films, making his first movie in 1987. He was born on 11th November 1961 and since 2005 has been the partner of Luisa Ranieri, actor and television presenter. They married on 23rd June 2012 at Castello Donnafugata, in Ragusa. They have two daughters.
7. Who wrote the Inspector Montalbano books on which the TV series is based?

Answer: Andrea Camilleri

Born in 1925, in Porto Empedocle, Sicily, Camilleri was already a well-established writer when he wrote his first Inspector Montalbano book in 1994. His novel "The Potter's Field" won the coveted Crime Writers' Association International Dagger, in 2012. Camilleri, now 89, still works as a director and lives in Rome.

At first, it is thought the tattoo is of a butterfly but then it is learned that it in fact a moth of the Sphingidae family. This family includes the large Hawk Moth which feeds on nectar and can sometimes be mistake for a humming bird.

Answer: A Tunisian boy

In this episode, Salvo shows a softer side than usual. In an area where illegal immigrants are unwelcome and unwanted, Salvo is sympathetic and helpful, even treating the elderly Aisha as he might his own grandmother. When the snack thief's mother is killed, Montalbano finds the little boy a good home with friends who own a farm.
10. Who is the highly efficient Detective Inspector who replaced his father (of the same name) and who works closely with Montalbano?

Answer: Fazio

In "The Young Montalbano", middle-aged Carmine Fazio was the respected police officer, mentor and friend of Montalbano and introduced his son, Giuseppe, who was at police college. After a series of health problems, Fazio senior reluctantly retired and his son took his place.
