Abraham Avatar / Juzo Okta is the captain of the "Argo" on its voyage from Earth to Iscandar. He is a veteran of space flight, having previously served as commander of a fleet of Earth ships that battled the Gamilons at Pluto. With his wife and son both deceased, he latched onto Derek Wildstar as a surrogate son. Over the course of the season, he grows increasingly ill with radiation poisoning.

He dies near the end of the voyage when Earth is again in view of the ship.

Peter Conroy / Saburo Kato was the second in command of the Black Tiger Squadron of fighter craft. He was a skilled pilot who often risked his life for his comrades. He later died in the second season of the series.

While Nova Forrester / Yuki Mora begins the series as a nurse, during the season she carries out a variety of other tasks, including serving as an operator of the radar system. The only significant female character in the first season of "Star Blazers", Nova is unfortunately the recipient of "fan service" moments, usually at the hands of the robot IQ-9 / Analyzer AU-09.

It is noticed that she bears a strong resemblance to Starsha and Sasha of Iscandar.

Homer Glitchman / Yoshikazu Aihara serves as the chief communications officer on the "Argo". While he has a supporting role in several episodes, passing on communications from Earth of the Gamilons to the crew, he plays a significant role in one episode.

When he discovers his father is near death, Homer becomes delusional and attempts to return to Earth in a space suit, despite already being millions of miles away from home.

Mel "Slops" Mulligan / Kaoru Shintani served as chief cook on the "Argo". The viewer saw him in one episode where the distracted Captain Avatar has wandered into the ship's galley. While Mulligan offered to help Avatar with anything he needed, he gently reminded the Captain that the galley crew would better be able to perform their duty without visitors in their way.

Patrick Orion / Hikozaemon Tokugawa served as chief engineer onboard the "Argo". While many of the ship's crew were in their 20s, Orion and Avatar were both significantly older. He spends time both in the engine room and on the bridge as his duties require. Orion had a young grandchild who the viewers saw in an episode where the crew members were communicating with family members.

Dr. Sane / Dr. Sazeko Sado served as the surgeon on the "Argo'. He received his initial training as a veterinarian. His skills as a doctor help to preserve Captain Avatar's life through most of the first season. He was a comic relief character at times in the Japanese series with his silly behaviors due to frequent consumption of sake.

In the American adaptation, the silly behavior remains but references to sake are largely bowdlerized.

Stephen Sandor / Shiro Sanada serves as the science officer on the "Argo". He was a classmate and friend of Alex Wildstar. In one episode the audience discovers he has had bionic limbs since childhood. In later seasons, when Wildstar served as captain of the "Argo", Sandor often provided advice.

In several episodes, Sandor's knowledge was the difference between the survival and loss of the "Argo".

Mark Venture / Daisuke Shima is the navigator for the "Argo". He is good friends of Derek Wildstar and serves a calmer counterbalance to the headstrong Wildstar. Venture sometimes has to overcome feelings of doubt even though he is skilled at steering the ship. His younger brother Jordy / Jiro appears in a few episodes.

Derek Wildstar / Susumu Kodai serves as the battle chief for the "Argo" and late in the season is nominated as acting captain by Captain Avatar. When the series opens Wildstar along with Venture is still a cadet. He was described as a hot-blooded and impulsive officer whose first response to every encounter with the Gamilons is to fight. Wildstar believes that he is an orphan with his parents having died when he was a child and his brother was mistakenly thought to have died in the battle at Pluto.
