Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first happening on the island was the plane crash of Oceanic Flight 815. Which character is believed to be accidentally responsible for the crash even confessing, "I think I crashed your plane."

Answer: Desmond

Plane crashes happen occasionally and usually are not mysterious, but this one seemed odd. As the seasons have gone by, the survivors learned that the all-important button from season two helped to release the tension of a strong electro-magnetic force. Desmond discovered the link that the day he delayed pushing the button was the day that the plane crashed on the island.
2. During the first season, Locke and Boone discovered a hatch buried in the ground. Which research initiative was behind the hatch?

Answer: Dharma

The Dharma Initiative was on the island in full-force by the 1970s. They built a small, reasonably modern town and research stations. The hatch was the top door to the Swan, designed by Dharma employee Stuart Radzinsky. Dharma was also apparently responsible for the weird appearance of polar bears on the island.

The Hydra station on a smaller neighboring island watched over the bears. Kate and Sawyer were kept in their cages in season three.
3. Sayid became distraught during season one for torturing Sawyer. He went on a solitary hike around the island and found a cable. Later, it was learned that this cable was attached to a research station. What was it called?

Answer: The Looking Glass

The Looking Glass was an underwater station that controlled communication from the island with the world. The Others had two women, Bonnie and Greta, guarding the station and utilizing it to block communication. Therefore, the survivors would never had been able to use a radio signal or later a satellite phone to contact authorities for help. Charlie and Desmond made it into the station to take down the communication barrier.
4. During the season two finale, Sayid, Jin, and Sun spied the ruins of a four-toed statue. Season five revealed the whole appearance. Which ancient mythology did the statue invoke in its appearance?

Answer: Egyptian

Hieroglyphics made their first appearance on the time counter in the Swan station, but that was the only sign that Egyptian mythology had any relevance to the island until much later in the series when they made a reappearance on the temple and the frozen donkey wheel. Below the temple in season five, Ben found an Egyptian picture carved into the wall of the monster and an Egyptian deity.

The full statue was first seen from behind when the survivors were skipping in time and then fully seen in a flashback of Jacob.
5. Can't have a 'Lost' mystery quiz without the monster. What is the typical appearance associated with the monster?

Answer: A moving cloud of black smoke

The monster's nature is still a big unknown. Is it hostile, benevolent, a judge? It has displayed all these characteristics. It has judged Eko and Ben. It has been seemingly merciful to others, like Juliet. Ben has stated that the Others have no word for the monster. A room below the Dharma barracks gives the ability to summon it but not control it.
6. I'll turn this question around. Which island mystery was Danielle Rousseau the solution to?

Answer: Who was behind the radio transmission?

In the second episode of the series a small band of survivors took the transceiver, recovered from the cockpit, and went to high ground to send out an SOS. Unfortunately they got interference from another radio signal. Tuning into it, they found a French message on a continual loop asking for help. Since a counter was on the message for how many times it had played, Sayid was able to calculate that it was playing for sixteen years.
7. Hope of rescue came at the end of season three when Naomi parachuted onto the island. However, it was very clear that rescuing the survivors was not their main objective. What was Martin Keamy's mission?

Answer: To capture Ben

The freighter had been commissioned by Charles Widmore, Ben's rival for island control. Not everyone on the freighter was aware of this mission. Daniel Faraday believed he was there for scientific experiments. Ben was fully aware of the mission and planted Michael on the ship as his spy.
8. Richard Alpert was certainly a mysterious fellow, but we do know something about him. Which of the following is NOT true about him?

Answer: He cannot leave the island.

Richard has been off the island several times, most notably to visit a young John Locke and to recruit Juliet Burke to the island. His inability to age was first seen through flashbacks that despite a gap of at least sixty years he still appeared to be the same age.

He told Locke that Jacob had given him this gift. Ben was the one who explained to Sun that Richard was the adviser to the Others' leader.
9. Season three's finale contained a closed coffin. Season four's finale opened it. Who was inside?

Answer: Locke

Three endings to season four were filmed to keep spoilers off track. Desmond and Sawyer were the alternative corpses. How Locke died was a mystery until a season five episode revealed Ben to be his murderer. This was not too surprising as this was Ben's second attempt. He had previously shot and left him for dead at the Dharma burial pit, where his friends and family were also dumped.
10. Jacob, not seen by the audience until the season five finale, has always been touted by the Others as the true leader of the island . Through flashbacks it was discovered that Jacob had had contact with some of the survivors already. Who was NOT one of them?

Answer: Juliet

Jacob was shown via flashback meeting each of the characters at eventful times in their pasts. Kate was stealing a lunchbox. Sawyer was writing the letter to the real Sawyer. Jack had just nearly bungled his first surgery. Locke had been thrown out of a building to be a paralyzed (might have been dead but Jacob brought him back). Hurley was dealing with people pushing him to return to the island. Sun and Jin were at their wedding reception.

While a flashback of Juliet was shown, Jacob was not in it.
