quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the episode "Elementary, Dear Data," the archenemy of Sherlock Holmes, in the holoprogram of Data and La Forge, was Dr. Jekyll.

Answer: False

Hopefully you knew this was false because Sherlock Holmes' archenemy was Professor James Moriarty. Dr. Jekyll was from the book "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Daniel Davis, an American Shakespearean Actor, played the role of Professor Moriarty. You may also know Davis as Niles the butler from the very funny '90s sitcom "The Nanny." I still enjoy watching "The Nanny" in reruns. It was such a funny show. Fran Drescher, as nanny Fran Fine, was the star of "The Nanny."

Being American, the English accent you hear in both this episode of "Star Trek: TNG" and in "The Nanny" is not natural. Real or not, his accent is very convincing.
2. In the episode "Elementary, Dear Data," a crew member on the Enterprise took on the role of Sherlock Holmes in a holodeck program. What is real name of the actor who played this crew member in the series "Star Trek: The Next Generation?"

Answer: Brent Spiner

Hopefully you knew the crew member who liked to play Sherlock Holmes in a holodeck program was Data. Brent Spiner was the actor who played Data on "Star Trek: TNG." Geordi La Forge took on the role of Holmes' ever faithful friend, Dr. Watson. Geordi La Forge was played by the actor LeVar Burton.

Jeremy Brett was probably most known for his role of Sherlock Holmes for British television in the '80s and '90s. To me he was the definitive Sherlock Holmes. Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard played the detective Dixon Hill in holodeck programs.
3. ("Elementary, Dear Data") The archenemy of Sherlock Holmes, in a potentially dangerous development, abducted Counselor Deanna Troi.

Answer: False

False, Moriarty kidnapped Dr. Pulaski not Troi. He used her as bait so Captain Picard would have to meet him. Moriarty was able to call up the holodeck "arch" which gave him access to the ship's computer so he learned all about the Enterprise, its crew, and the nature of his existence. He did not understand everything right away as many concepts were new to him.
4. ("Elementary, Dear Data") Who actually gave the computer the verbal instruction to create a character with the ability to defeat Data in a Sherlock Holmes holodeck program?

Answer: La Forge

Yes, it was Geordi La Forge who said those fateful words to the computer, "create an adversary capable of defeating Data" instead of having the computer create somebody who could defeat Sherlock Holmes. The reason
La Forge wanted to create a more formidable opponent for Data as Sherlock Holmes was because Data too easily solved the mysteries which took the fun out of the holodeck program. And also Dr. Pulaski stated she did not believe Data would be able to solve a true mystery.

Moriarty developed a consciousness, became self-aware, and then got total control of the holodeck. As Data explained it, Moriarty had to develop a consciousness to become an opponent who could beat him. Moriarty was even able to build a large device on the holodeck which could shake the Enterprise itself.
5. ("Elementary, Dear Data") At the end of this episode, what was the fate of the hologram who was the nemesis of Sherlock Holmes, and who had developed a consciousness?

Answer: His program was saved in the Enterprise's computer until such a time they knew how to make it so he can be outside the holodeck environment.

Yes, Picard promised Moriarty he would not delete him, but would save his program until they learn how to make him able to leave the holodeck. This episode ties in with the 6th season episode "Ship in a Bottle." Where once again the crew of the Enterprise has to face this formidable foe.

Interestingly, the original script had a different ending one in which Moriarty, if he had been aware of it, could have left the holodeck and Captain Picard knew this but kept it from him. It was changed at the request of Gene Roddenberry. If you would like to read this original ending a link is provided to it on the "Memory Alpha" website in brackets below.

The "Memory Alpha" article goes on to state it took a few years to make another Sherlock Holmes episode because of legal issues using the character.

6. In "Contagion" one crew member must have ended up black and blue by the end of the episode. First he was slammed around in a malfunctioning turbolift hitting one wall and then another as well as even the ceiling and floor of the lift. Then he was ejected violently onto the bridge when he reached his destination and the turbolift doors opened. Finally, he was thrown as easily as a sack of potatoes by Data (one handed throw too) away from a panel that was shocking him. After being so forcibly thrown, once he hit the floor, he stayed sprawled there for a few moments. Who was this unfortunate crew member?

Answer: La Forge

If you chose La Forge, you are right and congratulations, this has turned out to be the most difficult question on the quiz for some reason. Before rewatching this episode I didn't remember much about it but I did remember poor Geordi being thrown around and slammed into things.

The ship was experiencing malfunctions due to an alien computer program that was reprogramming their computer after they accessed the logs of another ship, the USS Yamato.

Geordi took that crazy turbolift ride because regular communications were out and he had to warn the captain to destroy an alien probe before it scanned them and before Picard could get a tractor beam on it.

Before this, the doomed Yamato wasn't so lucky and had been scanned by the probe and before the eyes of the horrified Enterprise crew, it exploded.
7. ("Contagion") The homeworld of the legendary, ancient, and advanced civilization the ill-fated Yamato and then the Enterprise searched for was called Atlantis, which was thought to be located in the Romulan Neutral Zone.

Answer: False

If you thought this was true maybe you were thinking of "Stargate SG-1," or "Stargate Atlantis" in which the lost city of Atlantis was found on an alien world in another galaxy-the Pegasus galaxy. Two great sci-fi series I miss very much!

In the case of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the lost, ancient but extremely progressive civilization was the Iconian civilization. Captain Varley of the Yamato believed he had even discovered the homeworld of the Iconians-Iconia, in the Romulan Neutral Zone. At first Picard and his officers speculated that a Romulan warbird had destroyed the Yamato but it became clear the Romulan ship too like the Enterprise was experiencing major malfunctions due to them accessing the logs of the doomed Yamato.

The race was on to find Iconia to prevent their advanced technology from being found and exploited by the Romulans.
8. It was said by other ancient peoples there existed a civilization they called "Demons of Air and Darkness" because they could appear, as if by magic, out of nowhere on far away planets. After finding the homeworld of this advanced ancient civilization what technology did Picard and the away team discover that explained how this ancient race was able to get to distant worlds so quickly which caused others to say they were like demons?

Answer: Gateway technology

Again, if you chose stargates maybe you were thinking of the sci-fi series, "Stargate SG-1" or "Stargate Atlantis."

In this case, the very advanced Iconians did not even need ships or transporters for they possessed gateway technology. According to the "Memory Apha," article "Iconian Gateway," the gateways made it possible for the Iconians to travel incredible distances of even 70,000 light years in an instant. This technology was beyond even Starfleet technology. The gateway looked like a door frame with an opening through which you could see the environment of a destination. The scenes would shift and each one could be a new location.

Picard and his away team found one of these gateways intact and he decided to destroy it lest it fall into the hands of the Romulans who could then use it to conquer the galaxy. Worf, helping a malfunctioning Data, used this gateway to travel back to the Enterprise on Picard's orders before he blew it up. Picard escaped the destruction of the control room by using the gateway to step onto the bridge of a Romulan warbird. Luckily O'Brien was able to beam him from this warbird which was in an auto-destruct countdown.
9. I am going to give you a couple sentences describing events in "Q Who?" which is the 16th episode of season two. There might be a mistake in the information given. Choose the answer which correctly identifies the mistake, if there is one, and fixes it. *In the episode "Q Who?", the Enterprise was flung by Q to a distant part of the galaxy where the crew encountered the Borg for this first time. Counselor Troi sensed something wrong and urged Captain Picard to leave and head back immediately, a warning he did not heed.*

Answer: It was Guinan and not Troi who sensed something wrong and warned Picard.

In response to Picard's rejection of his request to join the crew of the Enterprise and to teach Picard a lesson about how unprepared they really were to meet the dangers "out there" in unknown regions of space, with a snap of his fingers, Q flung the Enterprise 7,000 light years into an unexplored region of the galaxy ("Q Who?").

Guinan, whose species had been to this part of the galaxy, sensed something wrong and gave a vague warning to Captain Picard to head back home immediately. Under normal conditions it would take the Enterprise two years to return to Federation space. Picard instead decided to do some exploring first and investigated a class M planet whose machine technology had been ripped from the planet.

Then the Enterprise came in visual contact with a cube shaped spaceship Guinan identified as being Borg. Next, the Enterprise was invaded! Guinan's people had been nearly destroyed by the Borg.

It should be mentioned too that Guinan was not a fan of Q and the feeling was mutual!
10. Picard knew he was out of his depth and his ship was in danger of being destroyed by the Borg, so he turned to the only being who could get them out of this dangerous situation, Q. Below is a quote by Captain Picard to try and persuade Q to save them from the Borg when he seemed reluctant to help. "If we all ________ here, now, you will not be able to gloat. You wanted to frighten us. We're frightened. You wanted to show us we were inadequate. For the moment, I grant that. You wanted me to say 'I _______ you.' I ________ you!" What missing words go in the blanks? Please note the same word goes in the last two blanks which is why they are repeated in the answers below.

Answer: die; need; need

("Q Who?") The full quote is:

"If we all die here, now, you will not be able to gloat. You wanted to frighten us. We're frightened. You wanted to show us we were inadequate. For the moment, I grant that. You wanted me to say 'I need you.' I need you!"

One of the admirable characteristics of Captain Picard was his willingness to ask for help when he had to and also to ask his officers for their opinions and suggestions about important matters. Of course when he finally made a decision, that was the end of discussion. In this episode Picard did not let his pride prevent him from doing anything he could to save the Enterprise so he asked Q for help.

I wonder if he had heeded Guinan's warning and left the area right away instead of staying to investigate a planet, if the Borg would have detected them. Guinan could also have been more adamant and urgent in her warning to Picard. But maybe until she saw the Borg cube, she did not remember exactly the cause of the danger in this part of the galaxy.

Now if you don't remember if Q helped them get back to Federation space, I recommend you watch this episode again. "Q Who?" is a really good episode.
