Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which TV series, starring James Gandolfini, garnered an R rating due in part to its use of very colourful language and the prevalent theme of crime, and has also been criticized for depicting "less than favourable" stereotypes of a particular ethnic group?

Answer: The Sopranos

"The Sopranos" first aired on HBO in the US in 1999 and ended in 2007. It has since been broadcast in reruns on other networks and in many countries around the world. The series was about the dealings of a New Jersey organized crime family and the personal lives of the main characters. James Gandolfini starred as Tony Soprano, the head of the family. Though the series was highly successful and was generally praised by critics, it also received criticism for perpetuating the image of Italian-Americans as mobsters; Essex county in New Jersey even forbade the filming of the show on county-owned property for this reason.
2. There's nothing kid-friendly about this show - even the title is suggestive! Every episode is full of swearing, drug use and especially sex and nudity. What's the title of this show that premiered in 2007 and stars David Duchovny?

Answer: Californication

"Californication", a Showtime network original, stars David Duchovny as Hank Moody. Hank is a writer who, although he loves his long time on-again-off-again significant other, Karen, and their teenage daughter, Becca, can't seem to stop screwing up their lives and his. Throughout the series, Hank is shown to use and abuse alcohol and drugs, to run into trouble with the law, and above all, to have a real issue with remaining monogamous. "Californication" has been critically well-received but has also garnered a lot of criticism for its overt obscenity.

In fact, the show received backlash from conservative and Christian groups in response to the very first scene of the series, which depicted a nun engaged in sexual activities.
3. At first glance, this show may seem like an okay show for kids - it's animated and the main characters are elementary school-aged. After watching for a few minutes, however, you'd quickly see that it can be quite crude and tasteless, and those young main characters curse more than most grown adults! Some of the inappropriate things kids may see if they tune in could include a talking piece of fecal matter, a towel that smokes marijuana and a the repeated violent death of one of the main characters; what show is this?

Answer: South Park

"South Park", created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, premiered on Comedy Central in the US in 1997. The show revolves around school-aged Eric, Stan, Kyle and Kenny, and how they deal with ridiculous adventures with their families and friends. For the few seasons of the show, Kenny 'died' in nearly every episode, often in very violent and over-the-top ways.

The talking piece of fecal matter and the towel that smokes marijuana are Mr. Hanky and Towelie, two of the series' most bizarre and random, yet hugely popular, characters.
4. Which Canadian mockumentary followed the life of three career criminals and their families, friends, and foes, and was comprised almost entirely of swearing, drug use and violence?

Answer: Trailer Park Boys

"Trailer Park Boys" aired on Showcase in Canada from 2001-2007, with a final one-hour special shown in 2008. The show was presented as a documentary in which film crews followed and recorded the actions of Julian, Ricky and Bubbles and the other residents of Sunnyvale Trailer Park.

It's a good job that the show was not censored for graphic language, as just about every sentence spoken on the show contained a curse word or two! The use, distribution and growing of illegal drugs was also a common theme, as was occasional violence and gun play.
5. Which HBO series, rated TV-MA (adults only!), has a rather suggestive title which alludes to the side business of a seemingly-normal single father, Ray Drecker?

Answer: Hung

"Hung" began airing on HBO in 2009. The main character, Ray Drecker, played by Thomas Jane, works at a high school for his day job but also moonlights as a male prostitute (or "happiness consultant") to earn extra money. Jane Adams stars as Tanya, a friend of Ray's who helps him run his prostitution business and finds him new clients. Anne Heche also stars as Jessica, Ray's ex-wife, with whom he has two teenage children.
6. Like many Showtime original series, this show starring Edie Falco is R-rated. It definitely earns this rating, as drug abuse, adultery and other mature themes are rampant in every episode. Which show, which premiered in 2009, is this?

Answer: Nurse Jackie

Edie Falco stars as Jackie Peyton, a nurse with a substance abuse problem who works in a busy New York City emergency room. Falco won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2010 for portraying Jackie. In addition to drugs, Jackie also has a problem with remaining faithful to her husband, even sleeping with the hospital's pharmacist in order to secure more of the painkillers she is addicted to.

This kind of behaviour on the character's part caused the New York State Nurses Association to blast the show for creating such an unethical character who may give a negative impression of the nursing profession.
7. At first, you may think that this historically-based drama may serve as educational programming for your children. You would quickly find out, however, that it was full of nudity, sexual themes and violence - including heads being chopped off! Which of these series, starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, does this describe?

Answer: The Tudors

"The Tudors" aired for four seasons from 2007-2010, airing first on the BBC2 in the UK and then on the CBC in Canada before expanding into other countries. The series detailed the reign of King Henry VIII of England (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and his relationships with his six wives and the members of his royal court.

The show was definitely not for young viewers. King Henry loved the ladies and many of his lovers, as well as himself, were depicted in the nude. In addition to the highly sexual scenes of the show, there was also plenty of violence, including scenes of war, torture, death and of course the beheading of two of his wives, Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard.
8. Though this popular series about four female friends was well-liked by many women all over the world, it was really not appropriate for young children. Nearly every episode features sexual and mature themes, and if you happened to catch it in its original format or on DVD rather than in syndication, there was quite a bit of nudity as well. Which series that spawned two hit movies does this describe?

Answer: Sex and the City

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon starred as Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, the four BFFs of "Sex and the City". The show explored many topics in the realm of sexual relationships, including casual sex relationships, taboo fantasies, adultery, fetishes,... the list goes on. Though it was pretty heavily censored when in ran in reruns in syndication, when the show originally aired on HBO from 1998 until 2004, there was a lot of foul language and nudity - though Sarah Jessica Parker had a clause in her contract that ensured she would never appear on screen dressed in less than her undergarments.

The two movies based on the show, which explored similar topics as the TV series, were released in 2008 and 2010.
9. Despite the "Twilight" and other vampire-related media phenomenon being popular with many people of many different ages, one such television offering is really not appropriate for the younger viewers. Which HBO show featuring the character of Sookie Stackhouse is rated for adults only in both Canada and the US (as well as other countries worldwide) due to highly erotic themes and depictions, as well as violence?

Answer: True Blood

"True Blood", a show based on a series of novels by writer Charlaine Harris, debuted on HBO in 2008. The show features vampires and other supernatural beings. The main character, Sookie Stackhouse is telepathic and involved in a relationship with a vampire.

In 2008, Anna Paquin won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Television Series for her role as Sookie. The show has won and been nominated for many other awards, including Emmy awards, People's Choice awards and Grammy awards, among others.

The show's TV-MA or 18+ rating is well-earned, as it frequently depicts graphic simulated sex scenes as well as violent battles and profane language.
10. This show, created by a well-known film and TV star, may look like a kid's show due to the stop motion animation and claymation techniques, but most parental guidelines recommend that it not be viewed by young kids. The show typically parodies various aspects of pop culture, often in a crude manner. Which show fits this description?

Answer: Robot Chicken

"Robot Chicken" is the creation of Seth Green (known for many TV and film roles and Matthew Seinrich. It originally aired on Adult Swim in 2005. Seth Green voices many characters for the show, and guest voices are frequently provided by some of his "Family Guy" co-stars, including Seth MacFarlane, Mila Kunis and Alex Borstein.

Many other celebrities have guest-voiced as well. The show usually parodies and mocks pop culture fads, particularly those from Green's childhood and adolescence (from the late '70s into the '90s), such as "Transformers" and "Star Wars".
