Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the strip joint that Shanna works at?

Answer: The Penthouse

The story opens with Jake, the owner of a small fur workshop, yelling at his employees for their sub-standard work on recent pelts. Angry with the situation, he decides to leave and go to the local strip joint, at which he is a regular customer. Jake pays one of the bouncers with a small wad of cash and makes his way to the back rooms where a stripper named Shanna is waiting. Opening the door to Room 12, Jake spies a lone chair in the middle of the darkness and takes his seat. Shanna appears from behind a curtain in the back of the room and begins her dance, telling Jake that he smells like rotting flesh.

He explains that it's his job, and that one day, it'd make him very rich. He pays her a bit more and she takes off more clothes. When she finally gets near him, he jumps up and forces her to the wall.

She fights back and manages to get free of his grasp, picking up the chair and telling him he didn't pay her enough for that. He claims that one day, she'll want to sleep with him, and he departs.
2. What kind of animals make up the dangerous pelts?

Answer: Raccoons

Jeb and his son Larry, meanwhile, are out hunting animals for their pelts. While Larry worries about getting caught, Jeb tells him not to, since the only way they'll get caught is if he doesn't stop talking so much. They cross a barbed wire fence before arriving at their destination, a place that Larry is hesitant to visit because of the stories he's heard. According to Jeb, people made up stories about the local area to scare off trespassers.

When they reach an odd stone structure, Jeb says that it used to be part of an ancient city.

They find their traps and discover that nearly each one contains a raccoon. Quickly, Jeb shows Larry that you need to stomp on the windpipe of the raccoons to shatter them and kill them, however, the creatures should still be living, so they brought a bat to finish them off.

While looking at the stone carvings strewn about the area (some of which feature raccoon heads and paws), Larry finds one trap with only the leg inside. Jeb comments that you must really want to be freed if you bite your leg off like that.

As they walk back across the property with nearly a dozen pelts, they notice the owner of the area standing in front of her house, and they quickly make their exit.
3. What item does Larry use to kill Jeb?

Answer: A bat

Arriving at home, Jeb begins working on cleaning the pelts. He notes that the skin is thick and the raccoons are nearly identical to one another, which will result in a good amount of cash from Jake. Larry also notes that there's something weird about the raccoons, almost like they're warm inside. Jeb goes to bed while Larry cleans up.
Jake is back at The Penthouse watching Shanna on stage. While she dances, he receives a phone call from Jeb, who states that his coon pelts are of such good quality that anyone would be willing to pay ten times the going rate just to get their hands on them. Jake is intrigued, and Jeb says that these pelts could have the potential to give him anything his heart desires.
While Larry cleans up, he stares in awe at the beauty of the pelts, running his hands through the fur, feeling the softness on his face. Coming to a realization, Larry picks up the baseball bat near the door and heads upstairs to Jeb's room. He quickly wakes him up and starts smashing at his skull with the object, telling his dad that sometimes, you just have to keep swinging since there's still life in them.
4. Where do Jake and Lou find Larry's body?

Answer: In the basement

Arriving at Jeb and Larry's house, Jake and his partner, Lou enter the house and find their way to the back room containing the pelts. They stare in wonder at the amazing furs, saying that the sky's the limit with what can be done with them, and they search around to make a deal with Jeb. They make their way to a basement workshop to look around and they find Larry's corpse hunched over a table next to a trap.
After killing Jeb, Larry went to the back room with his bat and felt the furs one final time. Compelled by his work, he continued into the basement, taking a metal trap, cleaning it, and setting it up on the table. As one final step, he pushed himself face-first into the metal, slicing his face clean off.
Jake and Lou continue upstairs to find Jeb decomposing. while Lou asks what happened, Jake asks how beautiful their coat would be if they used the pelts. Jake says that they'll call the cops from the highway, but before that, they need to pack the pelts into the trunk of his car.
5. How long does Jake estimate it will take to finish the fur coat?

Answer: One week

When Jake and Lou return to the workshop, they open the trunk and have their workers bring in the pelts. Many of their Asian workers don't help, having looked at the pelts in awe and deciding against it. Jake explains that the coat that they make will get them into a great show and that he has a great model in mind for the jacket.

He quickly rushes to the strip club to tell Shanna, who says that she knows his business deals and that she wouldn't be with him for all the money in the world. Jake insists that the proposition is pure business though.

He's making the jacket, and he wants her to wear it to the largest international fur show. She is intrigued by the offer and she tells him that she'll think it over. He tells her that the coat will be done in one week, and when the magnificent piece is finished, he'll personally bring it by her place to prove that she will take the job.
6. Who owns the property where the pelts were originally found?

Answer: Mrs. Mayter

Back at the workshop, Jake watches as one of his workers cuts the pelts incorrectly. He quickly rushes over and yells at the man, saying that cutting the pelts is like an art form, and he will cut him if he makes any more mistakes. That night, the worker sits in his car drinking. Looking into a paper bag, he finds a pair of his own shears, and thinking it over, he unbuttons his shirt and takes his flesh into his hand. Using the shears, he begins to snip his torso open, tearing at the opening before pulling his insides out. Back at the workshop, Jake's workers begin sewing the pelts together to make the coat. Lou mentions that he couldn't even imagine what would happen if they had more of the beautiful furs from the raccoons, and Jake realizes that if he were to take two of the raccoons from the trapping location for himself, he'd be able to keep them as a breeding pair, making more and more coats.

He quickly sets off to find that location. Upon searching Jeb's bedroom, he finds the map tacked to the wall and heads to the property.
7. According to the owner of the property where the pelts were found, what is the name given to the animals that surround the ruins?

Answer: The Pine Lights

Jake arrives at Mrs. Mayter's property and finds the ruins. Making his way to her house, she ends up meeting him before he reaches the front balcony. He says that he bought her a bottle of moonshine and that he needs to ask her a few questions. She invites him in, saying that she's been expecting him.

They both sit in front of the fire as Jake asks about her animals. She explains that these 'Pine Lights' gathered many years ago and became sentinels of the lost city, which was once located at the ruins nearby.

She fenced off her land and warned people of their influences to prevent people from trespassing on the sacred soil, but she lost some of them a few nights ago. As Jake looks up to the windows, he sees many of these raccoons staring at him through the windows of the house.

He asks if that's them and she says that they are. He quickly asks if he can have a couple of them for himself and she yells at him, saying that he was the one who killed some of their group, and that his vanity would be his ultimate downfall.

She explains that he has yet to pay his dues to the Pine Lights before he is chased away.
8. How did one of Jake's seamstresses die?

Answer: Suffocation

Jake returns to the workshop to find Lou and his workers huddled around a body on the floor. Jake's lead seamstress was found, suffocated on the ground when everyone returned to work the following morning. Having sent everybody home late in the night, she stayed behind claiming that she could finish the jacket on her own.

After marveling the remaining fur left in front of her, she picked up her needle and began to stare at it. Coming to a realization of what she must do, she began by sewing her nostrils closed, then her eyelids, and then her mouth, inadvertently causing her to suffocate. Jake asks why they think she would do that to herself and he tells them to call the police. Lou says that horrible things have happened since they've been working on the coat and poses the idea that it could be cursed, but Jake doesn't listen. Rather than help, he walks over to the coat, runs his hands through the fur, and takes it to his car.
9. When Jake shows the coat to Shanna, does she like it?

Answer: Yes

Jake rushes to Shanna's apartment with the finished product and he takes the elevator to her apartment. Ringing her doorbell, she says that he shouldn't have come, but Jake opens the bag containing the coat and shows it to her through the peephole. She gasps in amazement and tries to feel the fur, but he waits until he's in her apartment to let her try it on.

She exclaims that she wants to keep the coat rather than model it and Jake says that there's a good chance she can after he lets a few models audition to show it first. Shanna gets nervous saying that she doesn't want anyone to model the furs but her.

He says that he can see what he can do before she crawls onto the bed and tells him that she's the only audition that he'll need to take.

He quickly follows her and jumps onto the bed, but instead of putting his focus on her, the focus shifts to the furs. By the end, Jake finds more pleasure in rubbing his face upon the pelts than being with Shanna. When he's done, he tells her he needs to use the bathroom to 'find something sharp'.

When she asks what he means, he replies that he meant he needed to 'freshen up'.
10. What body part does Shanna lose in the elevator?

Answer: Her hand

While Shanna models the jacket in her underwear in front of the mirror in her bedroom, Jake makes his way to the bathroom. Along the way, however, he walks by the kitchen and spies a knife on the counter top. Taking the inspiration, he brings it with him to the bathroom and cleans it off.

In the mirror, he takes the blade, tucks in his stomach, and begins to cut horizontally around the seams of his body, at the neck, arms, and waist. As he pulls the flesh over his head, Shanna hears the screams from the other room and lights up a cigarette.

When she turns around, Jake is calling her name, and she watches as he crosses the room with his skin, offering it to her as his work of art. She screams and flees the apartment with him following close behind. Tripping and falling down the hall, she makes her way to the building's elevator and manages to take it down the shaft a few floors. Jake manages, however, to open the gate to the shaft and fall into the elevator with her, smashing his face in the process. Shanna tries to open the door, but he grabs her and pulls her down, accidentally causing her to knock the lever for the automatic door.

She fights to pull away, grabbing the door, but accidentally closing it on herself in the process. As she struggles to free herself from her own trap, she is forced to tear the hand off, much like a raccoon in a snare trap. Shanna blacks out and dies of the blood loss. Later that night, the police find the bodies. Lou finds Jake in the elevator as the police investigate, and he stares at the fur coat draped over Shanna's shoulders.
