Sick Girl Trivia Quiz

It's love at first sight in Lucky McKee's "Sick Girl", but for one entomologist, an obscure bug delivered to her doorstep puts a damper on what may be true love; especially when someone is bit by the creature. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does Ida work?

Answer: The museum

The story opens with an odd perspective from the eyes of a weird bug. A man takes the creature, examines it, and places it into a small box.
Elsewhere, entomologist, Ida Teeter, is in her terrarium-filled apartment preparing for a date with another woman. As she prepares enthusiastically (while dancing to a song), she receives a call from her date who claims that she can't get together because of the bugs; they creep her out too much. Ida cries about this for a while before noticing a small bug crawling up her arm. Ida babies the bug before going to bed.
The next day, Ida walks to work (at the McNaughton Museum of Natural History) depressed with the events. As she walks to the elevator, her eyes catch a young woman sketching in the lobby. The two of them awkwardly look at each other before Ida enters the elevator and leaves for her office.
2. What happens when Ida speaks with Misty for the first time?

Answer: She accidentally kills a spider

When Ida arrives at her office, her co-worker, Max, soon realizes that she was stood up the previous night and consoles her. Ida claims to want someone she can connect with while Max suggests the girl who always sketches in the lobby. Ida doesn't like the idea though since her hair is so long, and she needs to be able to look the girl she likes in the eyes. Max suggests that Ida never tell other women what she does for a living (the bugs creep them out) and that she remove all of her pets. Ida claims that she can't change who she is. Ida and Max take the elevator downstairs, but Max soon shows Ida that he planned to leave her in the lobby to acquaint herself with the brunette who sketches downstairs.

As Ida tries to introduce herself, the brunette speaks first.

She says that she knows who Ida is and that she sits in the lobby since it's peaceful and it reminds her of her father. The girl introduces herself as Misty Falls and she says that she's not a hippie despite the hair and hobby.

While Misty asks if she wants to go out for a cup of coffee, a large spider crawls out of Ida's lab coat and she squishes it (in an attempt to hide what she actually does for a living). She quickly rushes away and hops into the elevator, but as she leaves, Misty pulls the hair back from her eyes, and Ida connects with her glance. That night, Ida skips home, happy with the situation.
3. When Ida speaks with Mrs. Beezley, what is her granddaughter (Betty) wearing?

Answer: A ladybug costume

When Ida returns home from work, she discovers that a package has been delivered to her apartment. She shoos a small barking dog away from it before picking it up. She soon has to put it down when she hears her landlord down the hall. She walks over to Mrs. Beezley and her granddaughter, Betty, before greeting them.

She also notes the fact that Betty is still wearing a ladybug Halloween costume even though Halloween was four months earlier. Mrs. Beezley tells Ida that other neighbours have been concerned with her pets because of their nature, but Ida assures them that none of them will affect Mrs. Beezley's apartments, which are kept abnormally tidy.

As she says this, the box on her welcome mat begins to shake around the floor. Excitedly, Ida brings her package inside and opens it to find a rather large bug.

She quickly calls Max to tell him the good news about Misty (who she plans to ask to dinner the next day) and the bug, which, as it turns out, is quite aggressive.
4. What does Ida name the new bug?

Answer: Mick

The next morning, Ida heads out for work, but she tells the new creature (who she affectionately names 'Mick) to wish her luck with Misty. During work, Ida takes the elevator downstairs to the seat where Misty makes her drawings and successfully asks her on a date. During lunch, she tells Max that Misty was receptive to her request ,and that afterwards, Misty drew a picture of her as a pixie (which Ida calls 'her thing'). Max asks if she told Misty about her 'thing', the bugs, but she says she hasn't.

While eating their Chinese food, Ida finds a cockroach in her food. Max confirms that the roach is actually from China, so the place must have good, authentic food. Everyone else files out of the restaurant. In the meantime, at home, Mrs. Beezley stands at her door with a can of bug spray.

The small dog from before, meanwhile, is being pursued through the hallways by Mick, the bug, who recently escaped the confines of his small tank.
5. During their date, Misty explains why she rented a movie. What is the movie about?

Answer: Texan pixies

Ida and Misty begin the date on an awkward note. Before eating, Misty tells Ida that she finds her attractive, and Ida is surprised by the comment. They hold hands until their main course is delivered to their table. After this, Misty says that she hoped they could watch a movie after dinner, but when she looked in the listings in the paper, she only found horror movies and talking monkey movies, so she rented one instead.

When Ida asks what it's about, it turns out it's about Texan pixies. Misty also says that she doesn't have a DVD player, so she hoped that Ida would have one. Ida quickly remembers what Max said about choosing babes over bugs, and she tells Misty that they can't go to her place.

However, when she looks into Misty's eyes, she gives in. When they arrive at Ida's building, Betty is introduced to Misty. Betty actually asks if Misty is a fairy and Misty is flattered by the comment. Shortly after, Mrs. Beezley calls Betty in for bed and the two head back to Ida's, where a certain bug is dragging a small dog into Ida's pillowcase.
6. Where did Ida hide all of her 'pets' before her date with Misty?

Answer: In the bedroom

As soon as Misty steps into Ida's apartment, she uses the word 'Snugsville' to describe the homey feeling of her living room. When she moves towards the bedroom, Ida quickly stops her at the door (not knowing that Mick is inside eating the dog). Ida is quick to offer a drink before they put on the movie that Misty rented. Misty takes a whole glass of whiskey in one drink and takes off her sweater in front of Ida before asking if their date was boring. Ida says that it wasn't.
Before long, Misty begins drinking a lot more, and Ida tries to make her move on Misty before the phone rings, interrupting the attempt. It turns out to be Max, who asks how the date has been going. Ida says that they're still in it, and that she moved all the bugs from the living room and kitchen into her bedroom because she didn't anticipate Misty being so easy.
When Ida hangs up the phone, Misty is asleep on the couch.
7. Does Misty ever go into Ida's bedroom?

Answer: Yes

Ida quickly gets a pillow and a blanket from the bedroom (the same ones from the bed), and tries to make Misty more comfortable. Before Ida can place the pillow under her head, however, Misty jolts awake and tries to gather her things. Ida quickly tells her that it'd be okay if she stayed at her place for the night, though she would need the privacy.

As she begins to leave, Misty says that she won't need the privacy and she takes her shirt off, beckoning for Ida to come closer. As they kiss in Ida's living room, they sit down on the couch and Misty leans into Ida's pillow. During this time, a small antenna pokes out and slides into Misty's ear.

She clearly feels this and Ida thinks that she's being too aggressive. Misty quickly tosses the pillow to the ground, not knowing what really happened, and they continue. The next morning, Ida wakes up on the couch and finds that her bedroom door is open, and she hears Misty inside.
8. Misty's mother, as it turns out, was a professor of entomology.

Answer: False

When Ida finds Misty in her bedroom, she discovers that Misty's father was actually the leading professor at the college in the entomology field, and it turns out that he was once Ida's professor. They have different last names because Misty's mother was a hippie and chose her own last name. Ida is delighted since Misty isn't freaked out by her 'pets'. They also notice that 'Mick' has escaped his cage, and the two of them decide to look around for the aggressive bug. All during this time, Misty has trouble with a nagging feeling about her ear. When she reaches into her hair, a strange goo comes off in her fingers. She doesn't tell Ida. Misty also sees something moving in Ida's pillow, but Ida mistakes this staring for daydreaming, and they continue looking. Their search comes to an end when they playfully fight in the bathroom. Ida accidentally hits Misty and knocks her over. Misty says that the hit wasn't strong, but she was feeling oddly weak, probably because of the whiskey from the previous night. Ida makes her lay down on her bed. When Misty asks if Ida cares for her, both of them realize that they're glad to have each other.
Over the next few days, Ida brings pictures of the new bug to Max, who says it can't be real. He also tells Ida to take it easy with Misty, but over the next few days, she moves into Ida's apartment. Ida notices that she's still not feeling well, and as she goes to put Misty's stuff into the bedroom, Misty takes out a small container of mealworms and goes to eat one. Ida walks back out too quickly though, so she puts them away.
In the hall, Mrs. Beezley brings her laundry to her room, and as Betty steps out to get her ladybug costume, 'Mick' scurries by. Betty chases after him, but Mrs. Beezley decides to talk to Ida about it. As she comes to Ida's door, she watches as Ida and Misty begin to kiss on the couch, and she rushes away.
9. After speaking with Mrs. Beezley, how long is Ida given to leave her apartment?

Answer: A week

The following morning, Ida heads out for work and she and Misty discover that the local dog (known as Pumpkin) has turned out to be missing. Ida leaves and Misty prepares to do laundry. While she begins to cough even more, she pulls the pillowcase off Ida's pillow and discovers that Mick has been nesting inside. As she goes to call Ida, the bug makes a noise and triggers something in Misty's head, causing her to drop the phone. She quietly brushes the hair past her ear to reveal that it has been turned into an infectious mass from the first scratch from the bug (during her and Ida's first date). She lays down on the bed and falls asleep as Mick uses the proboscis in her ear once again.
At work, Ida reads over a letter she recently received from the man who sent her the bug. She thinks the letter's tone is apologetic, and somewhat spur of the moment as it describes the bug as dangerous. Ida quickly connects this to the missing dog, realizing that Mick may have gotten to it.
When she arrives at the apartment, Ida realizes that the note was from Professor Wolfe, Misty's father, and as she nears the top of the stairs, Misty jumps at her and kisses her. While she does this, Mrs. Beezley and Betty walk out of their apartment and witness the occurrence. Mrs. Beezley quickly decides to have a talk with her. During their conversation, Misty gives attitude towards Mrs. Beezley and frequently scratches at her ear. Ultimately, Ida ends up having seven days to move out of the apartment. Ida quickly goes to her room to cry over the situation.
When they talk about it, Ida says that she's disappointed that Misty would laugh at the situation and make jokes about it but Misty retaliates, ripping the pillow from Ida's arms and yelling at her about everything. Ida tries to calm her down, but Misty yells obscenities even louder before her ear pops and she falls to the ground.
10. Who does not survive the end of the story?

Answer: Max

When Misty wakes up, she tells Ida that she had a wonderful dream. In it, she was a fairy, and a giant bug landed on her and used its proboscis to impregnate her. When Ida turns on the light, Misty says that "we like it dark in here." Before Ida can ask her what that means, the phone rings. Max asks Ida to come to the lab and she leaves Misty behind. Max tells Ida that illustrations were sent along with an additional letter. The bug, Mick, acts as a parasite, nesting in the nests of other creatures, taking their blood and replacing it with a toxin, and impregnating the being with its own young. In Ida's apartment, the exact same thing is happening to Misty.
Mrs. Beezley takes the opportunity to post the eviction notice on Ida's door, and when she returns to her own apartment, Misty is in the hall. Misty asks why Mrs. Beezley doesn't like her, to which she replies that she thinks they're perverse monsters. Misty agrees that she's a monster and she tells her father that she's sorry. Before Mrs. Beezley can comprehend this, Misty transforms into a monster, scaring Mrs. Beezley over the railing and down the stairwell. She breaks her neck in the fall and Misty returns to Ida's apartment, ripping the eviction notice off the door on her way. Betty finds her grandmother's body at the bottom of the stairs and calls the cops before Ida returns home.
When Ida enters her apartment building, Mrs. Beezley is being wheeled out in a body bag. While she consoles Betty, Misty makes mean comments and goes back to the apartment. Ida does too after a while and she calls Max for help. He rushes over. Ida finds Misty in the bathtub with cuts on her thighs. She explains that she may have been bit and realizes that she's been hiding the bug in her pillow. Ida opens the pillowcase and Mick races away. Misty quickly exits the bathroom and reveals the truth. Her father sent the bug so that it would impregnate Ida. For years, Misty has watched and drawn Ida because she's loved her. Her father knew the whole time and sent the bug to stop anything from happening, but it got to the wrong person. Misty realizes that she still has Ida, and now, she's a monster. As she transforms into the monster once again, Ida screams. Max, coming up the stairs, hears this and races into the apartment only to be seen by Misty. She catches him at the apartment door and kills him by eating his face. Ida, still on the floor, slips on one of Misty's drawings. Mick ends up scurrying onto her back and impregnating her as well with its proboscis. Misty spares her life because of this.
In the end, Ida and Misty sit on the couch, visibly pregnant, in matching outfits. Misty complains that Ida could beat her to giving birth, and both of them know that they'll have a few hundred of each- boys and girls. As the two of them look into each other's eyes, Mick impregnates them both through their ears.
