Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You know the characters Corporal Agarn, Captain Parmenter and Sergeant O'Rourke are from the comedy "F Troop," but what was the name of the fort they were stationed at?

Answer: Fort Courage

The show starred Larry Storch as Agarn, Forrest Tucker as O'Rourke and Ken Berry of "Mayberry RFD" fame as Parmenter. I made up Fort Hekawi. The Hekawi were the Indian tribe in the show, "We're the Hekawi," a lost tribe if ever there was one.
2. Which famous show has this as its premise? They were on the run from the military for a crime they didn't commit.

Answer: The A-Team

Who could ever forget these characters: Faceman, Hannibal, B.A. and "Howling Mad" Murdock; but do you remember some of these guest stars: Boy George, Isaac Hayes, Hulk Hogan or Joe Namath?
3. Although the hit show "Lost" has nothing to do with the military, one character, Sayid Jarrah, has a military background. Please name the armed service of which he was a member?

Answer: Iraqi Republican Guard

Sayid eventually becomes a torturer in the Republican Guard, skills put to use at times on the island. The love of his life is a woman whom he had tortured and then helped to escape. Sayid is portrayed by Naveen Andrews.
4. Name the military base that is the setting for "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."

Answer: Camp Henderson

Jim Nabors has said that it was difficult for him to watch the opening sequence of the show, since so many of the Marines he's marching with were killed in Viet Nam.
Another claim to fame for Jim Nabors, singing "Back Home Again In Indiana" before the Indy 500 for over 30 years.
The author of the quiz was stationed at both Pendleton and Legeune. My Marine buddies will get a kick out of "Camp Swampy, which is a nickname for Camp Lejeune."
5. Which branch of the U.S. Armed Services is the background for Tony Nelson in the show "I Dream of Jeannie?"

Answer: Air Force

Not only was Larry Hagman's character in the Air Force, he was an astronaut. "I Dream of Jeannie" was created in response to the success of "Bewitched" and was inspired by the movie "The Brass Bottle," also starring Barbara Eden.
6. The main character of "M*A*S*H" was Hawkeye Pierce, played by Alan Alda. What was the home town and state of this character?

Answer: Crabapple Cove, ME

So if Pierce isn't from Iowa, why the Hawkeye nickname? It comes from "The Last of the Mohican's," the only book Hawkeye's father ever read.
Cpl Klinger was from Toledo; Radar was from Ottumwa and Major Winchester was from Boston.
The television show and the movie which inspired it were adapted from the book "MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors" by Richard Hooker, and its setting is a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during The Korean War.
7. In "McHale's Navy," which veteran actor plays Lt. Cmdr. Quinton McHale?

Answer: Ernest Borgnine

All four actors were in the show but it was Borgnine who played the lead. I would describe this show as a cross between "Gilligan's Island" and the movie "Mister Roberts." A few men survive a Japanese bombardment of the island their Navy base is on, and they go into hiding with the help of the island natives.
8. Which of these actors, who played Germans in the sitcom "Hogan's Heroes," was actually Jewish?

Answer: All of these

In fact, Howard Caine, who plays the Nazi Major Hochstetter, and Robert Clary, who played Corporal LeBeau, were also Jewish.
"Hogan's Heroes" takes place in a German prison camp during World War II, where the inmates carry out espionage under the noses of the bumbling Germans.
9. Which television show dramatized the exploits of 'Pappy' Boyington and Marine Attack Squadron 214 during World War II?

Answer: Black Sheep Squadron

"Black Sheep Squadron" starred Robert Conrad as Marine Major 'Pappy' Boyington, who commands a squadron of misfits and turns them into the "Terrors of the Pacific" during World War II. This squadron was known as The Black Sheep Squadron. While the real Black Sheep Squadron might have been "Terrors of the Pacific," they were not misfits; but what fun would that be?
10. Name the television show with a military theme that had the following actors/actresses that you likely know from other places: Marg Helgenberger, Ricki Lake, Dana Delany and Robert Picardo.

Answer: China Beach

"China Beach" was a groundbreaking show at the time because it was a military-themed show that dealt with the effects of war on noncombatant military and civilian personnel. It also launched the careers of then-unknown actors and actresses like the four mentioned in the question. You likely know Marg Helgenberger from "CSI," Ricki Lake as a talk show host, Robert Picardo as the hologram doctor from "Star Trek: Voyager" and Dana Delany currently on "Desperate Housewives."
