Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 1, teams crossed from Sweden into which Northern European country?

Answer: Norway

Opening a clue at the Pit Stop on the Swedish-Norwegian border, teams were told to cross from Sweden into Norway to hop into cars and drive themselves to the city of Narvik in Nordland, Norway. Here, they would need to find the gondola which would take them up to the top of Fagernesfjellet, a mountain overlooking the serene northern wilderness. All of the teams departed from their fourth Pit Stop relatively early in the morning, but because of the separation between flights in the previous leg, there was a gap of more than a couple hours between the first and last place teams.
2. To claim the Fast Forward clue in Leg 5, the participating team needed to eat a roasted head of which animal?

Answer: Sheep

On top of Fagernesfjellet Mountain, teams found their regular Route Info and the opportunity to complete a local custom typically held around Christmastime to claim the Fast Forward, the only one on the race. For this task, Nat and Kat headed to a local restaurant to feast on a local delicacy, a dish later discovered to be a roasted sheep's head. Once both team members ate half, they would be able to proceed directly to the Pit Stop without completing the other tasks. Nat, surprisingly, stomached the task despite having been vegetarian for twenty-two years.
3. For the Road Block task in Leg 5, teams needed to rappel and ascend off the side of which of these?

Answer: Bridge

After a stop at Fagernesfjellet Mountain, teams were directed to a rather large suspension bridge just outside Narvik known as Skjomen Bridge. Here, one member of each team completed the Road Block in which they had to first harness into the ropes hanging off the side, then rappel to the edge of the water one hundred and thirty feet down. Once they received their clue from a boat below, they could then begin a grueling ascent back to the top before opening their clue and continuing onward. Kevin, Gary, Claire, Thomas, Vicki, Chad, and Katie all completed this physically-demanding task.
4. How many fish did teams need to carry during the 'Boat' Detour task in Leg 5?

Answer: Two

After the Road Block, teams raced through Narvik to a field in the Harvika region to find their Detour task. For this one, teams chose either 'Boats' or 'Bikes'. In 'Boats' (completed by Michael and Kevin, Brook and Claire, Chad and Stephanie, and Katie and Rachel) teams needed to direct their marked boat to a spot using a map, then deliver a large chainsaw and two large fish up a steep marked path to the man waiting at the top.

In 'Bike', completed by Jill and Thomas, Gary and Mallory, and Nick and Vicki, teams needed to bike along a marked path to a signboard containing lock combinations, then ride back and unlock the appropriate lock to receive their clue.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race in Leg 5?

Answer: Katie and Rachel

After the detour task, teams were told to drive themselves to their next Pit Stop, Ankenes Marina, which would be the fifth such spot in the race. Upon arriving here, Nat and Kat, who won the Fast Forward clue, claimed their second first place victory of the race (second in a row as well) and won a trip for two to Costa Rica courtesy of Travelocity. Katie and Rachel, who departed from the Pit Stop in last place, were unable to pass any of the teams in this fifth leg and were eliminated upon arriving at the mat becoming the fourth to do so in this race.
6. In Leg 6, teams flew to Russia. Which city were teams told to fly to?

Answer: Saint Petersburg

In Leg 6, teams were required to make their way to the city of Saint Petersburg, Russia. This, of course, would be difficult since everybody was departing from a marina in Northern Norway. To get to Saint Petersburg, everyone had to board a train taking them south through Sweden so that they could catch flights in Stockholm. Everyone bunched up on the same flight to Russia and scattered in the city to find Vasilievsky Island for their next clue.
7. In the 'Classical Music' detour option in Russia in Leg 6, how many songs did teams need to correctly identify?

Answer: Three

Upon locating the Rostral Columns on Vasilievsky Island, teams set out to complete their Detour task for this leg of the race. In 'Classical Music', teams needed to take a taxi to Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace and find one room inside containing three gramophones. Once they listened to the three instrumental pieces ("Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky, "Scheherazade" by Rimsky-Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky's "Troika") they needed to go into a nearby room filled with concert pianists and pick out the three (in the correct order) by taking their sheet music to a man waiting outside. If they correctly identified the three songs they would receive their next clue, an image on a vinyl record. Only Nick and Vicki and Chad and Stephanie completed this task.
8. Upon completing the 'Classical Cinema' Detour task in Leg 6, teams received which of these?

Answer: Film canister

For 'Classical Cinema', teams traveled to the Lenfilm Studios in Saint Petersburg and needed to search through endless film strips for one depicting a film playing on a nearby wall ("October: Ten Days That Shook the World" by Sergei Eisenstein). When they found the right strip and gave it to an attendant they would receive a film canister depicting their next destination: Palace Square, specifically Alexander's Column, in Saint Petersburg. Jill and Thomas, Brook and Claire, Michael and Kevin, Nat and Kat, and Gary and Mallory all completed this task.
9. In the Road Block task in Russia in Leg 6, what vegetable did teams plant?

Answer: Potato

After finding the clue at Palace Square, teams needed to take a taxi to the town of Alexandrovskaya and find a marked road leading to a neighbourhood store, outside which would be their clue box. Here, teams found a Road Block in which one team member needed to dress up as a babushka and transport a wheelbarrow of manure (which they'd need to collect) and a bag of potatoes to a local yard (which they'd need to locate as well). Once there, the teammate had to plant fifty potatoes as per local babushkas' methods to get their next clue. Jill, Brook, Kevin, Stephanie, Kat, Mallory, and Nick did this one.
10. Which team was first to arrive at the Pit Stop in Russia in Leg 6?

Answer: Jill and Thomas

In the end of the leg, teams needed to find the Pit Stop at a park across from the rather large Saint Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. Upon arriving, Jill and Thomas landed on the mat in first place (their second time during the race) and they won a trip for two to Sao Paolo, Brazil courtesy of Travelocity (as always). Nick and Vicki ended up being last to arrive this time.

The two of them flip-flopped between Detour tasks long enough to push them to the back of the back, but luckily, they arrived on a non-elimination leg and were spared.
