Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the salvage company that illegally grabs the TARDIS?

Answer: Van Baalen

The Van Baalen brothers run a ramshackle salvage operation. They illegally take the TARDIS with a magno-grab beam, which causes so much damage the engine explodes. Most of the episode focuses on the Doctor trying to rescue Clara and fix the TARDIS.
The Doctor did meet Vincent Van Gogh in "Vincent and the Doctor". Van Helsing is the vampire hunter made famous in "Dracula". There is Fan Fiction where the Doctor meets him.
2. What is the name of the 'android' in "Journey to the Center of the TARDIS"?

Answer: Tricky

There were three Van Baalen brothers: Gregor (Ashley Walters), Bram (Mark Liver), and Tricky (Jahvel Hall). Tricky has been convinced by his brothers that he is an android. In a dramatic scene, the Doctor forces Gregor to tell Tricky the truth: he is actually human.
Kamelion is a shape shifting android who is a companion of the Fifth Doctor in 1983 and 1984. The robot was incredibly difficult to operate, and was quickly written out of the show.
3. What is NOT one of the methods used by the salvage crew to open the TARDIS?

Answer: Explosives

Bram suggests using explosives, but Gregor nixes the idea. Seconds later, the Doctor shows up - somehow he had been thrown clear of the blast, unscathed. That tends to happen to the Doctor a lot.
4. How long does the Doctor give the salvage brothers to find Clara?

Answer: 30 minutes

He starts out at 60, then changes the countdown to 30 before threatening to change it to 15. This does light a fire under the brothers. Only when he reveals that it was all a bluff does the Doctor realize that the TARDIS really was exploding.
5. When they visit the center of the TARDIS, what is the name of captured collapsing star?

Answer: The Eye of Harmony

This season, episodes have been paying homage to past doctors. "Journey" is clearly an homage to the Fourth Doctor. The first appearance of the Eye of Harmony is in a Fourth Doctor adventure, "The Deadly Assassin". The orb was originally captured by the legendary Time Lord Rassilon, and was the source of the Time Lords' power. The Doctor explains that it is "an exploding star on the way to becoming a black hole."
The Fourth Doctor era has several episodes where we see the inside of the TARDIS: "The Mask of Mandragora" (1976), "The Invasion of Time" (1978) and "Logopolis" (1981). The Eye also plays a major role in the television movie in which the Eighth Doctor appears.
The Heart of Gold is the spaceship in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" written by Douglas Adams, who was a staff writer on "Doctor Who" at one time. The Key to Time was the theme of the sixteenth season of "Doctor Who" in 1978-79.
6. When Gregor scans Clara, what part of England does it say she is from?

Answer: Lancashire

This is probably no surprise, but Jenna-Louise Coleman is from Blackpool, Lancashire. She was a straight A student in school there. Lancashire is in northwestern England. Historically, Lancashire was a major manufacturing area, especially textiles. Today, it relies on the defense industry.
Northamptonshire is the home of Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor. Lincolnshire is in northeastern England and Leicestershire is in the Midlands.
7. What is the message that is burned on Clara's hand?

Answer: Big Friendly Button

At the start of the episode, Clara grabs a remote control which burns her hand. This proves critical to the plot, as it allows the Doctor to track down the point in time where he has to reverse what happened. Upon pressing the "Big Friendly Button", time is reset, the brothers decide not to grab the TARDIS, and Doctor and Clara go flying off into.... well, wherever they fly off to.
8. When the Doctor and Clara get to the heart of the TARDIS, they appear to be outside. What does the landscape look like?

Answer: Foggy cliff

They appear to be on the edge of a rocky, mist-shrouded cliff. The Doctor explains that this is a defense mechanism of the TARDIS, which is attempting to keep them away. The two of them leap into the mist to discover the TARDIS engine in thousands of pieces. It's a good thing they had that Big Friendly Button to help them.
9. When Gregor scans one of the fire zombies, who does it turn out to be?

Answer: Clara

Major Spoiler here! The monsters turn out to be Clara from the future, after the Eye of Harmony has turned her into a grayish fire monster that instantly incinerates whatever it touches. The reveal comes when Gregor scans the monster and it has the same DNA as Clara. Best line of the episode may be Clara saying, "Good guys do not have zombie creatures! Rule one, basic story telling!"
Gregor and Tricky are also roasted by the Eye of Harmony and turn into fire zombies.
10. Who violated "rule one of story telling" as the writer of "Journey to the Center of the TARDIS"?

Answer: Stephen Thompson

This was Stephen Thompson's second "Doctor Who" episode. He wrote the pirate-themed "The Curse of the Black Spot," the third episode of season six. Thompson has also written several episodes of "Sherlock" and several plays which have been performed in London.
Mat King was the director. This was his first time directing a "Doctor Who" episode. Walters played Gregor Van Baalen, the ship's captain. While he has done a lot of acting, he is probably best known as rap artist Asher D. Marcus Wilson was one of the producers, and has helped produce most of the season six and season seven episodes.
