Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film opens with a family having dinner. Whose birthday is it?

Answer: The father's

This story begins in 1981. A family sits for dinner one evening and the son comments that it's the second time that month that they've had ribs. He says he keeps a chart for it since he's watching his protein intake. His father laughs at this and says grace.

The family talks about the events of the day before lightning is seen through the window. The mother says that the storms are coming earlier this year, and that for some reason, everyone in the neighbourhood has been stirred up lately. One neighbour yelled at her earlier over trivial things.

The family laughs it off, claiming that the woman who yelled earlier has always been a bit of a nut. The mother quickly goes to the kitchen and asks the son to help her with something. As they leave, the father notices something out the window. Upon entering the kitchen, the son finds a birthday cake for the father, and the mother asks for his help in bringing it out.

As the son goes to get the plates, he notices a black, oily substance dripping onto his hand, and as they look to the ceiling, they find a small stain of the substance dripping down.
2. Twenty-four years after his family was killed, what did Kevin Reddle become?

Answer: A sheriff

While the mother and son look at this, the father comes into the door behind them. The mother is disappointed and tells the father that the cake was supposed to be a birthday surprise. After she says this, he pulls a shotgun out from behind him. He mutters that 'the damned thing found him' before pointing the gun at his wife and pulling the trigger. She falls back against the wall as he shoots her again, and the son runs out the front door.
His father follows behind with the gun though, and he has to make his way through the dark to escape. After his father follows him into a nearby field, the boy, Kevin, hides in a tree while his father races around. Soon though, his father makes his way to his truck, and looking into the window, he sees Kevin in the reflection. As he turns around and aims his gun at the boy, an invisible force pushes him against the truck and rips open his torso, pulling out his intestines and spinning him upside-down. Kevin watches as the damned thing kills his father.
Twenty-four years later, Kevin has become the local sheriff in the town of Cloverdale, Texas, and he never knew what the thing had done.
3. For how long were Kevin and Dina seperated?

Answer: Three months

Kevin and his partner, Strauss, make their way down to the local diner for lunch, and along the way, Strauss asks Kevin to sell the house he lives in because of all the memories he had of his parents. Kevin disagrees however, saying that it's the last piece of his parents that he has.

When they arrive at the diner, they find Kevin's wife, Dina, behind the counter serving the patrons. Kevin's son, Mikey, is also present, and he gives the boy a shiny compass as a gift. When the two sit down, they are quickly served and Dina sits down with them at the counter. Soon after, lightning strikes outside and Dina notes that the storms are coming extremely early this year, and that the townspeople haven't been feeling well for an odd reason. Most of them are edgy and tired. Kevin marks this down as a flu bug going around, and brushes the idea side. Shortly after, the local priest, Father Tulli, exits the washroom and walks up to Kevin for a chat.

He says that Kevin is close to the age his father and grandfather were before they did what they did, and if he ever needed assistance, God would be a good listener for him. Dina pulls her husband away from the conversation before it continues.

As they go to the back of the restaurant, they talk about their situation. Kevin says that their split was unnatural to him and that he wants her to come back to him. Dina, although she would like to be with him, says that she can't stand being watched by cameras all over his house.
4. What was the name of Kevin's father?

Answer: John

Across town, a man is hammering a ladder together out of some scrap wood and nails. As he tells a joke out loud, he ends up missing the nail he needs to strike and hits his hand. He screams in pain and continues to pound for the nail, but in his frustration, he turns his aim around and begins hitting himself in the head with both ends of the hammer.

As he tears at his scalp he falls to the ground. Kevin makes his way back home and goes inside for a drink. He says that he believes that the people you love never really die- they just go to a place and wait for you.

He sits down with his drink in an office and stares at the only thing of his father's that he kept- a box with his name engraved into it. He mentions that he never opened it before, because he never had a key, so he always wonders what's inside it.

As he takes another drink, a black, oily substance drips onto his hand from the ceiling, and he recalls the night his father went mad. When he looks back down, the black liquid is gone.
5. When Kevin finds the overturned car in the lightning storm, what does the driver tell him?

Answer: "The road was alive."

The phone rings moments after and Kevin rushes over to pick it up. On the other line, Kevin hears a weird noise and the phone hangs itself up. After this, his watch goes off, and Kevin watches as his camera video screens begin to malfunction and turn off one by one. All the while, A loud crashing and booming noise is traversing the roof of the house. Kevin takes a flashlight and makes his way outside into a lightning storm. From his front lawn, he sees that his video camera has been broken and he quickly jumps into his car and begins driving.

He finds that both his cell phone and radio don't work and tosses them aside. As he continues down the road he finds an overturned car and a woman on the road. He jumps out and lets her know who he is before telling her that he'll need to take her to the hospital himself.

She quietly mentions that 'the road was alive' before he lifts her up, revealing that her bottom half was severed in the crash.
6. When Kevin arrives at the hospital, the doctor tells him about her colleague. What did her colleague do?

Answer: Slit his throat with a pair of scissors

Kevin arrives at the hospital and is met by Strauss in a hallway. Kevin speaks with the doctor on duty about the occurrence before Strauss says that he called Kevin about another incident no more than an hour earlier- a man had beat himself to death with a hammer outside his house, and he was found by his son that night.

When Strauss called, Kevin's phone died out. The doctor takes Kevin into the next room to show him the body and she leads him to a third table occupied by her colleague, Doctor Morris.

While they were talking earlier that night, he took a pair of scissors and slit his own throat. He couldn't be saved. The doctor says that she doesn't want word of the incidents to get out though she knows something big has happened. She still wants the hospital to be viewed as a safe place. Kevin tells her not to worry and that he'll notify the car crash victim's family.

As Kevin leaves, he comes across a mirror in the hallway. As he watches his skewed reflection, a sinister mouth opens in his forehead and grins an evil smile.

It slowly seals itself back up before Kevin walks away.
7. What did Kevin find in the cover of his father's box?

Answer: Newspaper clippings

The next day, Kevin finds himself in a furniture store where he's approached by a man named Mr. Litton who writes the nearby paper. Mr. Litton goes on to tell him about a little research he's done about the recent incidents and how the only other time the town erupted in violence, it was when his father went mad. Now, it seems, the town is on the brink of another disaster, and it could culminate with Kevin's point of insanity. Kevin says that nothing is going to happen and that insanity will only occur when everyone is too scared.

As he talks about this with Litton, a clerk brings Kevin three boxes of new video cameras for his surveillance and Litton makes a comment about these too. Kevin tells him to stay away while Litton notes that the final stage of denial is self-destruction. Kevin finds himself back at home in front of his father's box.

As he drinks away, he takes a pocketknife and jimmies at the lock, but he accidentally cuts his finger in the process. He tries again and breaks the lock to find an empty box.

Although he is initially disappointed, he notices a compartment in the lid of the box and pries it open to find newspaper clippings about the oil rush forty miles south of Cloverdale. He recalls that after the oil was found, the weather got bad and many people turned against each other in a nervous rage. He recalls people saying that when the oil fields dried, the town went against itself. 208 people were killed. The Damned Thing came for his father.
8. From which town did the Damned Thing come from?

Answer: Sturgess

Kevin calls Dina and Mikey at the trailer and Dina suggests that they get together the next day for Kevin's birthday since Mikey has a gift for him. Kevin tells the two of them to get into the car and meet him at the gas station so that they can get out of town because something is coming to get him.

The Damned Thing that caused the massacre of 1959 got out and followed his father to Cloverdale where it found him and drove him mad. Now, on the same birthday as his father's it's coming back to finish him. Dina says that it's nonsense, and this is the type of thing that makes her not want to get back together with him.

As he continues to try and convince her, Dina and Mikey hear something crash onto the roof of the trailer and it shakes the vehicle violently, causing the electricity to fail. Dina yells at Kevin over the phone and at Mikey for no reason before the phone cuts out. Kevin rushes over through another lightning storm and finds Mikey still in front of the TV.

As he asks him where Dina is, she comes from behind him and hits him with a frying pan.

He is able to get up and stop her from another attack before convincing her to leave with him and Mikey in the car.
9. Kevin, Dina, and Mikey arrive home to find a group of townspeople inside. Where does he send them?

Answer: Into the basement

While Kevin drives back to the house, he speaks with Strauss on the phone. He tells Strauss that he'll be in town shortly, and he just needs to drop Dina and Mikey off at home. Strauss is scared though; the town is going mad and no one will listen to him. Strauss goes to the confessional of the local church and speaks with Father Tulli about everything, but halfway through the confession, the phone rings. It's Kevin on the other line and he says that he's staying at the house. He tells Strauss to take people out of the town to be safe, but Strauss continues to say the people won't listen. The phone cuts out and Strauss finishes his confession. Father Tulli, on the other side, clearly gets angry and breaks through the confessional window to grab Strauss' gun. He quickly does and puts it into Strauss' mouth, shooting and killing him before leaving.
When Kevin, Mikey, and Dina arrive at the house, they go inside to find a group of people with weapons. They claim that they fought their way to the house for safety and they're looking for help from their sheriff. Before they begin fighting amongst each other, Kevin breaks them up and puts them into the cellar, telling them that they'd be safe down their with their weapons. He places Mikey in his bedroom before Dina tells Kevin that she felt the Damned Thing go into her in the trailer like a poison. She is concerned that it's still in her, but Kevin reassures her that she's okay before sending her up with Mikey.
In the bedroom, Mikey and Dina wait next to the bed, but they notice that the clock on the bedside table is no longer working. As Mikey puts his hand out to touch it, the black oil drips down onto his hand from the ceiling. Dina pulls him away as the lights flicker and the Damned Thing makes its way back onto the roof. Downstairs, Kevin gets his shotgun.
10. The Damned Thing finally gets Kevin in the end.

Answer: True

Kevin listens near the cellar door as the people in the basement murder each other in their fear. One woman makes her way to the top of the stairs while Kevin is laughing and she screams to be let out as the rest of them are dead. Instead of helping her, Kevin turns the shotgun to the door and kills her. Dina watched the whole thing from behind him and he discovers this when he turns around.

She yells for Mikey to lock the door to the bedroom, and although Kevin claims he would never hurt her, she runs up. Kevin nearly begins to pursue her, but Mr. Litton knocks at the door, screaming that his wife tried to kill him and that the Damned Thing only came for Kevin in the first place. Kevin opens the front door and shoots him as well. As he makes his way back upstairs, Dina and Mikey escape out the window and down a trellis to the front yard.

By the time Kevin reaches the bedroom, he looks inside to find that they've gotten out. He looks outside and finds Father Tulli yelling for him to come out. Tulli catches Mikey and takes him from Dina as they try to escape and he holds him at gunpoint, stating that the evil has come for both Kevin and Mikey. Before Tulli can fire the gun at Dina, Kevin shoots him from the side, killing him. Dina and Mikey run for the car, and Kevin tries to follow them.

However, as he chases behind, he steps into a puddle of oil which brings him down like quicksand. Although Dina and Mikey try to pull him out, he yells at them saying that it only wants him. Behind them, the Damned Thing forms out of the oil and into a large creature. Mikey and Dina race to Kevin's car and drive away as Kevin is eaten by the oil creature. It slowly seeps back into the ground. As Dina and Mikey continue down the road, they run out of gas. Dina tries to get the car started again, but to no avail. Mikey opens the compass that Kevin gave to him to find that it is spinning in circles. As the red arrow points directly to him, the car begins to shake an the windshield breaks. The two of them are left at the mercy of the Damned Thing.
