Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the Doctor at the very start of "Listen"?

Answer: Sitting on top of the TARDIS

The Doctor was sitting atop the TARDIS, which was hovering in space. He was apparently deep in meditation, then climbed down and posed several questions. Self-answered questions appear to be one of the quirks of the Twelfth Doctor.
The Doctor does show up in Clara's apartment, and on the last planet in the universe, but later on in the episode. The preview for "Time Heist" shows the Doctor and Clara in a bank vault.
"Listen" explores the issue of whether the Doctor, who has fought the scariest monsters in the universe, has a boogeyman himself.
2. During his date with Clara, what did Danny Pink mention that he did as a soldier?

Answer: Dug wells

Danny noted that he had dug 23 wells while he was serving in the military, providing clean water for villages (presumably in Iraq). Clara had made a somewhat insensitive comment regarding Danny's military background, and it led to the discussion of wells.
Both Danny and Clara made assumptions about each other that led to a nasty argument, and Clara leaving the restaurant.
Danny is played by Samuel Anderson, who is probably best known for his work in "The History Boys" both in the theater and on film. He worked with James Corden, Russell Tovey and even Matt Smith on the play. He was also in the long-running UK soap opera "Emmerdale" as Ross Kirk. Anderson pulls double duty in "Listen", playing both Danny and Danny's great-grandson Orson.
The date scenes were shot at the Mimosa Restaurant on Mermaid Quay, which is right on the waterfront in Cardiff, Wales.
3. Where did the Doctor say the orphanage they visited was located?

Answer: Gloucester

The TARDIS, which was psychically connected to Clara, took them to an orphanage in Gloucester -- the orphanage where a young Danny Pink is located. Clara was distracted and thought of Danny, which led the TARDIS to Gloucester.
Gloucester is located in southwestern England, not too far from the Welsh border. Its population was around 122,000 (2011 census). The town origins date back to the Romans and 97AD (roughly the time of "The Pandorica Opens").
Worcester and Hereford are north of Gloucester. Salisbury is South of Gloucester
4. What was the name of the little boy that Clara and the Doctor met at the orphanage in "Listen"?

Answer: Rupert

The little boy was Rupert, a name he was not fond of. The Doctor and Clara save him from some sort of monster, at least it seemed like a monster. The boy had been having dreams about someone hiding underneath his bed.
At her second meeting with Danny, Clara brings up the name Rupert, and it makes him extremely defensive. It leads to their second argument, but this time Danny was the one who left the restaurant in a huff.
Remi Gooding is the young actor who played Rupert. He has appeared in London's West End in the play "Matilda".
5. What rank did Orson Pink have in "Listen"?

Answer: Colonel

Orson Park was a colonel. He was involved in the first time travel experiments conducted on Earth, and wound up traveling all the way to the end of time. It was Pink's good fortune to have Clara and the Doctor around to rescue him.
Colonel Pink appears to be a descendant of Danny and Clara, at least it is heavily implied in the episode.
6. What was the "family heirloom" that Orson Pink had carried with him for luck?

Answer: A toy soldier

Orson carried a toy soldier called "Dan the soldier man" which had belonged to Danny (Rupert) Pink. Orson gave the toy soldier to Clara.
The Doctor used his "dad skills" to put Rupert to sleep, and give him dreams about "Dan the soldier man." Clara appeared almost stricken when she realized how large an impact she and the Doctor had made on Danny's future.
7. Finish the line said by both the Doctor and Clara: "Fear is a ___________."

Answer: superpower

The Doctor was the first to tell Danny Pink that fear is a superpower that fills your brain with adrenaline and makes you fun faster, fight harder and more alert. Clara repeated the line near the end of the episode, also stating that fear made you "faster, cleverer and stronger".
8. Where did the TARDIS wind up right after Orson rescued the Doctor?

Answer: Gallifrey

The TARDIS is being threatened by whatever was released when the door opened at the end of the universe, and the cloister bells begin to chime. Clara relinks with the TARDIS to get to safety, and winds up interfering with the Doctor's past. "Listen" manages to merge the events of "The Name of the Doctor" and "The Day of the Doctor" by taking Clara to the Doctor's childhood on Gallifrey.

She finds a scared little boy, and gives him advice about fear as a companion. Because Clara stepped into the Doctor's time energy during "Name of the Doctor" presumably her timeline is inextricably linked with every moment of the Doctor's timeline, so theoretically she could travel to any moment in the Doctor's life. Clara hints that the barn where the young Doctor is staying will be important centuries later during the events of "The Day of the Doctor."
9. Who ended up being the "monster under the bed" that the Doctor was so afraid of during "Listen"?

Answer: Clara

In a strange twist, Clara ends up being the one who grabs the Doctor's ankle when he was a young boy, giving him nightmares for centuries to come. Clara does give the young Doctor a reassuring pep talk, but given the Doctor's obsession with discovering what was hiding under the bed, it seems to have only partially worked.
10. Who wrote the screenplay for "Listen"?

Answer: Steven Moffat

"Listen" is Moffat's third script of season eight. Moffat has been the show-runner for "Doctor Who" since the start of 2010, and has written most of the important episodes of the show since. Moffat also wrote some of the best scripts of the Russell T. Davies era, including "Blink" (2007) and "The Girl in the Fireplace" (2007).
McKinnon was the director for "Listen". He is a veteran "Doctor Who" director, with episodes including "The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky" (2008), "The Power of Three" (2012) and "Cold War" (2013).
Kiran Shah was the monster under the blanket in Rupert's bedroom.
Murray Gold is the musical director for "Doctor Who" and has written almost all of the music for the program since the reboot in 2005.
