Answer: Spaghetti sauce

At the beginning of this episode viewers saw Sophia singing in the kitchen, over a pot of spaghetti sauce she claimed she just "threw together". However when Dorothy entered the kitchen and rushed over to sample her mother's cooking, she commented that "this is your special 14-hour sauce. What's the occasion?" Though Sophia still insisted that nothing had inspired her cooking, Dorothy reminded her that she had not made the sauce "since Uncle Dominic married off his daughter."

Answer: A bowling ball

When Blanche entered the house exclaiming, "Oh, girls! I cannot believe how extravagant I've been," she was carrying an expensive handbag. Laying the bag down on the kitchen table, Blanche continued her speech, revealing that what she had bought "cost too much money, but when I saw it in the window," she "had to have it." However it was not an item of clothing, or a handbag, (as one may have assumed), that Blanche pulled out of the bag on the table, but a dark red bowling ball. Looking down at it, Blanche asked the rest of the girls what they thought of it, prompting Dorothy to come out with above quotation.

While discussing a bowling tournament, Sophia revealed that she would be unable to team up with Dorothy as she was meeting an old flame of hers from Sicily". The man's name was Augustine Bagatelli, and it transpired that he and Sophia had once been engaged.

It was in fact Rose, not Dorothy, who was revealed to have a competitive side in this episode. Having previously competed with Blanche in the bowling tournament, Rose went behind her friend's back and signed up with Dorothy instead. When confronted about it by Blanche, Rose told her that "Dorothy's a better bowler than you are and I want to win this year!"

When Dorothy and Blanche went to the bowling alley to get in a little practice, Blanche was delighted when she found out they were going to be playing in aisle number seven. Announcing "that's my favourite", and "I'm so glad we got number seven", her enthusiasm caused a curious Dorothy to ask, "You're not superstitious?" However the reason for Blanche's excitement was soon revealed, when she responded with "No, it's adjacent to the men's locker room."

While Dorothy and Blanche were practicing in the bowling alley, Rose and Sophia turned up. An outraged Blanche demanded to know why they were there, as she and Dorothy were "supposed to be sharing" the aisle "with the Nielsen twins". However as Rose explained, the Nielsen twins "had to drop out to go to Lars' funeral", so she and Sophia agreed to step in. Following this, Rose and Sophia took off their coats, revealing black and pink bowling outfits, which were identical to the one worn by Blanche. An incensed Blanche then turned to Dorothy, who attempted to calm her down by saying the above quotation.

During the scene at the bowling alley, it became clear that Sophia and Rose were aiming to do everything they could to rile Dorothy and Blanche. This was particularly evident when Rose called Sophia "Ma". Stopping in her tracks, Dorothy turned on her heels and faced the pair, only to be told by Sophia that she and Rose had "grown very close these last few days". Advancing menacingly on Rose, Dorothy said "Now, listen, no one calls her 'Ma' except me. You got that?" As Blanche pulled an angry Dorothy away from Rose, Sophia was heard giggling and saying "What did I tell you? I knew it would get under her skin."

Earlier on in this episode, Dorothy and her mother made a bet on the bowling match. If Rose and Sophia won, then Dorothy had to lend her mother "the money" needed "to fly to Sicily with Augie". However if Dorothy and Blanche were to win, Sophia had to give her daughter the "antique silver earrings" she had never previously been allowed to wear.

The match in question was a close one, and although it did look as if Blanche and Dorothy were going to win, Dorothy eventually lost the match on purpose. For as she prepared to throw the ball, she caught sight of her mother and Augie reminiscing and threw a "gutter ball" on purpose.

As she and her mother shook hands, Dorothy told Sophia "You go honey, and with my blessing".

Near the end of this episode, Dorothy was sitting in the living room listening to Sophia tell her about her trip to Sicily with Augie. When asked whether she had enjoyed the trip, Sophia's eyes lit up as she responded with "the best. Going home brought back a lot of nice memories." She also emphasised the importance of having Augie with her, explaining that at her age, "it's nice to have someone to share it with".

At the end of this episode Sophia gave Dorothy her prized antique silver earrings, saying that she had "won 'em fair and square". A puzzled Dorothy responded with "Oh, come on. What are you talking about? You and Rose won that tournament." Proving she knew her daughter well, Sophia retorted with "Please. You blew it on purpose. The nine pin for the spare is your best shot."
