Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many contestants were featured in this inaugural season of "The Great British Bake Off"?

Answer: Ten

While this season featured ten home bakers vying for the title of winner, later seasons would feature a dozen contestants, usually with up to ten episodes of competition during which baking challenges of all sorts would be brought forward to examine their masterworks. Eight contestants this season were from England while one was from Scotland and another was from Wales.
2. Who judged the bakers during the competition?

Answer: Specific professionals

The very first season, in addition to introducing hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, also welcomed the show's two judges for the first time. Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef and prolific cookbook author Mary Berry and celebrity chef Paul Hollywood provided their expertise and support to the contestants in this first season and many to follow, also acting as the panel to decide which bakers would stay in the competition from round to round or be sent home.
3. How many different locations were visited over the course of the season?

Answer: Six

Over the six episodes, the bakers were taken to the baking tent as it popped up in six different locations around the UK, each stopping in a notable place for a thematic challenge testing their skills and prowess in the kitchen. In later seasons, this decision to tour around the UK was not continued, likely due to cost, and the show would be filmed in a specially-designed environment to accommodate a dozen cooks.
4. In the first episode of the show, the bakers were asked to make a series of dishes, all focused on what specific food?

Answer: Cake

In the very first episode, the ten bakers brought in for the competition were sent to the Cotswolds for a series of challenges designed around baking cakes. This commenced with the construction of their 'signature cakes', was followed by the technical creation of a traditional Victorian sponge cake (based on Mary Berry's own recipe), and ended with a final show-stopping entry on the second day which forced the bakers to utilize chocolate. Mark, whose first cake sunk, and Lea, whose Victoria sponge was regarded as the worst, were eliminated after this last challenge.
5. The second round of the competition sent the competitors to Scotland. What is something they created there for their technical challenge?

Answer: Scones

Heading to Scone Palace in Perthshire, the top eight bakers moved onto the biscuit round, heading to their stations to create tea-time bakes. The two hour signature round had the contestants create-- go figure-- scones, though using the ingredients from Paul Hollywood's own recipe.

After these batches were done, only the show-stopper round (a trio of petit fours consisting of macarons, meringues, and choux pastries) remained. Jonathan excelled this week in the scone department while Louise and Annetha were sent packing in the final double elimination of the series.
6. The third round of the competition saw the bakers creating which of these?

Answer: Breads

Continuing to Kent for a stop near Sandwich, the final six contestants were told to theme their dishes this week around bread, using their know-how to complete very technical bakes to pass muster. This commenced with the typical free bake, showcasing the bakers' creativity (or technical ability) and then led into a technical challenge using ingredients from Paul Hollywood's typical cob recipe. Jonathan was sent home after lackluster early loaves and for burning his Chelsea buns in the final challenge, which required a dozen sweet and a dozen savoury rolls.
7. Which baker was eliminated during the fourth round involving puddings?

Answer: David

Bakewell seemed like a suitable place for the tent to go next, so the final five bakers were sent there and asked to work at puddings. The first challenge asked for a well-molded pudding of the contestants' own choice, but the technical challenge involved a highly complex hot lemon soufflé. David didn't rise to the occasion; his crumble, bread, and suet puddings in the final challenge weren't able to bring him up to the caliber of the other bakers, especially after unrisen soufflés in the second task.

He was the only baker in the competition to be in the bottom of the judges' critiques for all four of his episodes.
8. How many different dishes did the bakers need to make in the penultimate show-stopper challenge involving tarts and canapés?

Answer: Six

It was off to Cornwall for the final four bakers in the penultimate stage of the game, and this week it was pastry on the mind. The signature dish for this week asked the bakers to create savoury pies while the technical challenge required four local, savoury Cornish pasties.

The final challenge in Cornwall was the most difficult thus far as the contestants needed to make two different types of tarts and three different canapés for the judges. Jasminder struggled this week, especially in the technical challenge (in which she overused her Cornish pasty contents), and was sent home before the finals.
9. The finals of the competition brought the playing field from three to two after a challenge involving the baking of how many croissants?

Answer: None

On the final day, in Fulham Palace in London, the final three were forced to face their final signature showcase, creating not croissants, but cupcakes. What the bakers discovered was that one of them would be eliminated on the back of this penultimate task and that there would be no technical round, affording them no opportunity to rebound.

This cupcake round saw the departure of competition front-runner Miranda, whose lemon cupcake did not top Edd and Miranda's offerings. It took the judges five hours of deliberations to make this decision.
10. Who won "The Great British Bake Off" Season 1?

Answer: Edd

For the final challenge, Edd and Ruth needed to cater for the ultimate garden tea party, each creating twenty-four tarts, twenty-four scones, twenty-four choux buns, and twenty-four brown and white bread finger sandwiches using freshly-baked bread. They also needed to do so in five hours for forty guests. In the end, Edd's series-long consistency was a strong factory in deciding Edd's victory.

Since the show, Edd took a career in baking and has since written several cookbooks on the subject.
