Answer: An RV

Dale's RV figures prominently in the first two seasons of "The Walking Dead." It's where he lives, and he also stands on top of it in order to provide security for the camp and keep a look out. In season 2, Beth's boyfriend Jimmy uses Dale's RV to save Carl and Rick from a barn surrounded by walkers.

Answer: Amy and Andrea

At the onset of the apocalypse, Andrea and Amy were stranded in Atlanta while heading back to Amy's college after taking a trip. As they were surrounded by walkers, Dale rescued them in his RV. Eventually, all three settled at the camp in the quarry near Atlanta. Dale develops fatherly feelings for the two women.

After Amy dies, he tells Andrea they were the first two people he had been able to care for since his wife's death.

In season 1, episode 3, a walker makes it up to camp because, Jim says, "They're running out of food in the city." Jim, Dale, and Shane all attack it, and Dale eventually decapitates it, but it doesn't die. The jaws on the decapitated head are still snapping when Daryl shows up on the scene.

He shoots an arrow into the gnawing head and says, "It's gotta be the brain. Don't y'all know nothing?"

Answer: A fishing hat

One of the features of Dale's "costume" is his fishing hat, which resembles Henry Fonda's hat in the movie "On Golden Pond." When Daryl tracks a deer only to find it gnawed on by a walker, he flies into a rage and kicks the decapitated walker. Dale tells him to "Calm down, son. That's not helping," to which Daryl replies, "What do you know about it, old man? You take that stupid hat and go back to 'On Golden Pond!"

Dale tells Andrea in season 1, episode 5, "Wildfire" that his wife had cancer. Despite Dale taking her to several doctors, she was resigned to her disease, and her resignation angered him. He bought the RV to take her cross country in his retirement, but she died of cancer before he could begin the trip. This left him depressed, but he eventually decided to take the trip by himself. While on his travels, the outbreak occurred, and he ran into and rescued Amy and Andrea.

In season 2, episode 6, "Secrets," Dale tells Lori how he and his wife Irma attempted to have a child early in their marriage, and she couldn't stand the smell of meat, so he had to clear it out of their house. She ended up miscarrying, and they never tried again.

Answer: A pair of bolt cutters

Rick asks for the bolt cutters in order to cut Merle's handcuffs to free him, because T-Dog lost the key down a drain. Dale is initially hesitant to give up his tool but agrees to hand the bolt cutters over if Rick will give him parts of the van he brought to camp in exchange. Dale's RV needs to have its radiator hose repaired.

Answer: A watch

In "Vatos," when Dale is sitting by the campfire, Morales asks him why he's always winding his watch "like a village priest saying mass." Dale gives a little speech that draws from William Faulkner's novel "The Sound and the Fury." He says, "I like what a father said to his son when he gave him a watch that had been handed down through generations. He said, 'I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire, which will fit your individual needs no better than it did mine or my father's before me, I give it to you not that you may remember time, but that you may forget it for a moment now and then and not spend all of your breath trying to conquer it.'" Amy replies, "You are so weird."

Words from this speech - "Remember," "Forget," "Spend," "Try," and "Conquer" - are later used as episode titles in season 5.

In season 1, episode 6, "TS-19," When Andrea, upset over her sister's death, decides to stay behind at the CDC so she will die when it explodes, Dale refuses to let her. Dale tells her that she doesn't get to make him care about her and then just leave him, and that he'll stay by her side until she dies if she insists on remaining in the CDC. Unwilling to let him die, Andrea leaves in the nick of time.

Answer: "We've all wanted to shoot Daryl."

The group had taken away Andrea's gun, feeling she wasn't properly trained to use it. But Rick gave lessons on the farm, where she'd been practicing with a rifle. However, in season 2, episode 5, Andrea mistakes Daryl for a walker. After she shoots Daryl, Dale tells Andrea, "Don't be too hard on yourself. We've all wanted to shoot Daryl."

"You were protecting the group" is what Daryl tells Andrea when he forgives her.

Answer: Shane

In season 2, episode 6, "Secrets," Dale confronts Shane about his suspicions. He saw Shane looking down the barrel of a gun at Rick in the woods. He also has suspicions about the inconsistencies in Shane's story regarding the night Otis died. He tells Shane, "I know what kind of man you are." If Dale thinks he might kill his own best friend, Shane says, then "what do you think I might do to some guy I don't even like when he starts throwing accusations around?"

Answer: The bag of guns

In "Pretty Much Dead Already," Dale tries to hide the guns because he distrusts Shane and doesn't want him to use them to hurt anyone. Shane catches him in the act, however, and says he's taking the guns unless Dale shoots him. Dale doesn't stop him because, he says, he doesn't want to become a monster in this new world they're living in.

Dale makes a passionate plea in "Judge, Jury, Executioner" when the group meets in the farmhouse to discuss Randall's fate. "This new world is ugly, it's harsh, it's survival of the fittest," Dale says, "and that's a world that I don't want to live in. I don't believe that any of you do. I can't. Please, let's just do what's right."

Only Andrea, however, takes his side. Disgusted, he leaves the farmhouse after telling Daryl the group is "broken."

Answer: Shane

While on patrol in the night, Dale sees a dead deer. As he's looking at it, a walker attacks him from behind - the very same walker Carl failed to kill earlier when it was trapped in the swamp. Carl didn't tell anybody about the walker he left alive nearby, and thus he blames himself for Dale's death. If he'd killed the walker, it wouldn't have lived to kill Dale.

Daryl hears Dale's cries when he is attacked, rushes to his aid, and stabs the walker, but by then it is far too late. Dale has been disemboweled, is in great pain, and is bound to die. Rick tries to shoot him to put him out of his misery, but he can't bring himself to. Daryl is the one to deliver the mercy, killing shot to Dale's head, saying, "Sorry, brother."

At Dale's funeral, Rick promises that they'll try to hold onto their humanity to honor him. Dale's death occurs in season 2, episode 11.

In the season 9 episode "What Comes After," while Rick is near death's door and hallucinating, he sees himself walking over a pile of corpses of his old friends. Dale is among them. Dale was played by actor Jeffrey DeMunn.

Although Dale has killed numerous walkers, he is unique among most of the characters in that he never kills a living, human person. That's fitting, given that he told the group if they killed Randall, "we're saying there is no hope. Rule of law is dead.

There is no civilization." It's interesting to speculate whether Dale might have changed his tune had he lived to see the Governor, the Wolves, the Saviors, or the Whisperers.
