Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Grandpappy's first name?

Answer: Amos

Portrayed by Academy award-winning actor, Walter Brennan, Grandpappy was presented an an irascible, stubborn and opinionated man. However, he could sometimes be persuaded into thinking the way the majority of the family did with logic or reasonable demonstration. Many of the plots revolved around Amos's conflicts with other family members, neighbors, or community regulations.
2. Two of the main characters were Grandpappy's grandson Luke McCoy and also "Little" Luke. What was the relationship between the two Lukes?

Answer: brothers

Unbelievable as it seems, Luke (Richard Crenna) and Little Luke (Michael Winkleman) were brothers. This is explained in the pilot episode when the elder Luke relates that their parents were so excited about having another baby, they forgot about the elder one. That's a stretch!
3. Aunt Hassie was another character. What was her real first name?

Answer: Tallahassie

Tallahassie "Hassie" McCoy was the younger sister of Luke and older sister of Little Luke. She was played by Lydia Reed. Hassie was a high school student and dated on and off with a boy named Tommy (Malcolm Cassell) who was into hot rods much to Grandpappy's consternation.
4. From what state did the McCoy family originate?

Answer: West Virginia

The opening theme says it all: "From West Virginee they came to stay in sunny Californ-i-ay" mirroring "Beverly Hillbillies" a decade later. The McCoys were Appalachian dirt farmers hailing from Smokey Corners, West Virginia who relocated to California when they inherited a farmstead there.
5. Who was the relative from which the McCoys inherited the farm in California?

Answer: Uncle Ben

Only mentioned once in the pilot, when Uncle Ben passes, his farm is left to the McCoys. They decide to pack up, relocate there and try to make a go of the farm out west.
6. What was the name of the Mexican farmhand included with the estate?

Answer: Pepino

Tony Martinez, who was actually Puerto Rican, played the friendly but sometimes less than ambitious worker. In one episode, Luke and Grandpappy notice Pepino works much harder when he has a girlfriend. They try to marry him off thinking they can get more work out of him. Martinez started out as a bandleader and was an accomplished musician.

He worked on Broadway and also had may guest appearances on TV shows in the 1960s. BTW - "Pepino" in Spanish means "cucumber".
7. What character actor played Grandpappy's neighbor and friend, George MacMichael?

Answer: Andy Clyde

George lived on a nearby farm with his sister, Flora (Madge Blake). The two men sometimes squabbled over minor issues, but it was implied that Flora might be a developing love interest for Grandpappy. However, that never seemed to pan out. Clyde was born in Scotland and was perhaps best known for playing Hopalong Cassidy's sidekick, California Carlson.
8. At one time, Grandpappy took on the U.S. Air Force. What was the issue?

Answer: sonic booms

Grandpappy became very riled because he thought the military jet's sonic booms were disturbing the livestock, not to mention his own peace and quiet. It was resolved when the reason for them was explained along with an appeal to Grandpappy's patriotic nature.
9. How did the McCoys usually get around when they had to leave the farm?

Answer: an old jalopy

Ford Motor Company supplied all the vehicles used on the show. The McCoys owned an old Model A that always seemed to break down at critical moments. A far cry form the Galaxie that neighbor George MacMichael drove.
10. What was Luke's pet name for his wife, Kate?

Answer: Sugar Babe

Luke usually used it when placed in an awkward situation with Kate (Kathleen Nolan) along with much stammering. Nolan left the series in its last season, usually attributed to a contract dispute, and was written out. Her disappearance was never explained on the show, only referring to Luke as a widower. Nolan was the first female president of the Screen Actors Guild, serving from 1975 to 1979.
