Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Sally takes John up to the Ten Commandment Killer's room, what does Liz hand to him?

Answer: A gun

Outside the West Los Angeles Health Center, Wren is hit by a truck and pronounced dead at the scene. That's when John remembers where he first saw her. It was in one of the coffins in the pool of the Hotel Cortez. He returns to the hotel to speak to Liz at the front desk and demands that he be led to the killer who must be harbored by the staff.

Unfortunately, Liz doesn't allow him to take his anger out any further, and Sally comes by to stop John from making any bad decisions. Sally offers to tell him the truth; Liz offers him a gun.
2. What does John find in Mr. March's safe?

Answer: Body parts

Sally brings John upstairs to Room 64 and tells him that there are answers on the other side of the door. When he walks in, however, the room is empty. It used to be James March's office. Sally gives John the details; March died in the room at 2:25 in the morning, the same time at which people are typically killed in the same spot, or else subject to horrible visions.

She advises John to look behind the armoire as she closes the door, and it's there they find his safe. Inside are pieces of each of the Ten Commandment victims-- hands, eyes, brains...-- with two empty jars. John wonders how the killer got in, but Sally says that the killer had a key the whole time. That's when John realizes...he's taken up the mantle, and he's always been the killed.
3. When did John first visit the Hotel Cortez?

Answer: 2010

At the morgue, Detective Hahn watches over Wren's body while John enters. That's when John decides to confess as he believes he's lost his mind. The truth is, John walked into the Hotel Cortez five years earlier, the night he dealt with the carbon monoxide suicide and needed to drink his way out. Back in 2010, he had a few too many drinks, but not before stopping at the hotel bar and getting propositioned by Donovan to join a party upstairs. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately for John, it wasn't the party he expected.
4. During their first meeting, Mr. March serves John which of these?

Answer: Absinthe

Donovan brought John up to the suite of James March where The Countess happened to be engrossed in one of her monthly dinners with her husband. At the tenants' bequest, John spills the beans on his horrible day, surprising and delighting March with the notion that 'death is the only thing in life that has any meaning'. March insists that both Donovan and The Countess depart despite it being an important dinner; he wants one-on-one time with the detective, and he pours them both a glass of absinthe.
5. The Countess kidnapped Holden on the recommendation of Mr. March.

Answer: True

March informed John that as soon as he walked into the room, he sensed that the detective's aura would be jet black, making him an interesting individual. He wanted John to let loose his rage since it was clearly so pent up, but it was obvious that he couldn't hurt anyone, being a man of the law.

They talked and drank for two straight days before he passed out in the bed in Room 64. After he slept, March told The Countess that he wanted John to be his disciple...he would just need a little push.

This is how he got the idea for his wife to kidnap Holden and make the boy her own. He would need to hate the world and everything in it before he could be of use. He woke up in his car, outside his house, having lost all that time. Trying to make amends for his time away, he promised a beach trip. Holden would go missing that day.
6. Mr. March kept the head of which of these victims as a trophy?

Answer: His accountant

After Holden went missing, he kept returning to the Hotel Cortez, splitting himself between life with his wife and life with James March. March continued to urge John that he would need to shed his pain in some way since crime would never pay. One night March took him into his trophy room for the first time...to show off the heads on his wall (including his accountant). John never told anyone, and in 2015, when he returned to the Hotel on what would've been Holden's birthday, he admitted that justice would, perhaps, never be served.
7. John's first victim was which of these?

Answer: A film critic

Mr. March revealed to John a man named Mr. Gamboa who, heading to the Hotel Cortez, took photos of a pornographic nature with a young boy. Almost instantly, John knew he had to take justice into his own hands, heading to the man's apartment under the guise of a movie memorabilia collector and beating him to death with an Academy Award. Mr. Gamboa was his first victim.
That night, returning to the Cortez, James tried hanging himself in his bathroom, but Sally cut him down.
8. When James tried to commit suicide, who cut down his noose?

Answer: Mr. March

It was Sally who James kept coming back to the Hotel Cortez to see; he was having an affair with her the whole time. The night he tried to hang himself, James listened as Mr. March cut down the noose and berated Sally for not acting to stop him. There was always a deal between March and Sally to keep the demons at bay, but this was lost on James.
Hahn informs John that Sally died at the Cortez twenty years ago.
9. How many Commandments did Mr. March kill for before his work was resumed by John?

Answer: Two

As Sally and Mr. March tended to John on that first night of murder, he revealed to them that the killing was the most amazing thing he'd ever accomplish, and made him feel like he never had before. March, of course, nurtured this and encouraged the chaos. John realized that it never brought Holden back, by any means, but March insisted that it was a good first step on making the world a better place. That was when March showed him the safe for the first time, encouraging him to complete the killings he'd already started, fulfilling the Ten Commandments. John would become the lead detective on the case and avoid getting caught.

It would be irresistible.
10. Detective Hahn becomes a victim of the Ten Commandments Killer. What commandment did he break?

Answer: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife.

When Detective Hahn met John at the Gamboa crime scene, it was actually the third time he'd been there (but the first time as the lead detective). It was then that he heard Hahn and his wife went out for coffee to discuss his well-being, and this alone sent him over the edge. He'd initially planned to kill them both but instead Sally directed him to the two who'd committed adultery. At the twins' house, John didn't see another figure-- he saw himself.
Hahn doesn't believe John anyways; it sounds too crazy. He insists that John couldn't be a murderer, but that's where he's wrong. John claims his next victim, Hahn, because 'thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife'. Hahn had been seeing Alex.
That night, John returns to the Cortez with all of his memories. Heading to the front desk, Iris is thrilled that he finally knows since she was tired of keeping up the front and refusing to add to his pain. He admits he wasn't ready, but he has no regrets...except Wren. Iris says that Sally was responsible for sending Wren out; they were protecting him.
John places the eighth body part into the safe, and two remain. March admits his pride for his disciple; John admits he has clarity, finally.
