Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Enterprise crew finds themselves in a strange area of space. Why are they here?

Answer: They are looking for a starship that has gone missing.

The Enterprise travels to an uncharted area of space, which is the last known location of the USS Defiant. There has been no communication with the Defiant in the past three weeks. Sensors are not able to detect the Defiant but they are able to see it drifting. Space is breaking up all around the Enterprise and the warp engines are losing power. Captain Kirk decides to beam over to the Defiant to investigate and he brings Spock, McCoy and Chekov along for the ride.

This was probably not a good idea.
2. What happened to the crew of the Defiant?

Answer: They killed each other.

The boarding party beams onto the Defiant's bridge to find a horrifying scene. The Defiant's crew is dead and it appears they killed each other in the midst of a mutiny. The boarding party splits up to investigate other areas of the ship and look for any survivors. McCoy heads to sickbay.
3. How does Dr. McCoy determine that the Defiant is dissolving?

Answer: He passes his hand through a man's body and a table.

While investigating sickbay, McCoy reaches out to examine a crew member's body and his hand passes right through it. He also notices a table seems to be transparent and his hand passes through it as well. Over on the Enterprise, Scotty doesn't like what he is seeing.

The Defiant is starting to disappear. But there's a bigger problem. The same thing is happening to the Enterprise. The transporter is on the fritz and only three people make it back. Kirk remains behind on the Defiant.
4. Who is the first Enterprise crew member to be affected by the unstable area of space?

Answer: Chekov

The Defiant vanishes, taking Captain Kirk with it. Spock theorizes this area of space is where two separate universes overlap and the Defiant has slipped into the other universe. Since Kirk was caught in the Enterprise's transporter beam when the Defiant vanished, he should still be in the area.

He calculates the next spatial interphase between the universes will occur in two hours and they should be able to get Kirk back at that time. Spock does not want to move the Enterprise away from the area as this could disrupt the fragile space around them. Any disruptions would throw off his spatial interphase calculation.

After feeling dizzy while aboard the Defiant, Chekov has a full blown melt down on the bridge of the Enterprise and has to be subdued.
5. Who shows up and orders the Enterprise to leave this area of space?

Answer: Tholians

If you got this one wrong, you should be ashamed of yourself. It's called "The Tholian Web" after all. If things were not bad enough, a vessel approaches. It is from the Tholian Assembly. The Tholian captain claims ownership to this area of space and orders the Enterprise to vacate the premises post-haste. "Don't let the door hit you on the way out" kind of haste. Spock explains the situation and the Tholians agree to give them the allotted time they need to retrieve Captain Kirk.
6. Why was Captain Kirk not at the expected coordinates during the first spatial interphase?

Answer: The Tholian ship disturbed the already weak area of space.

The spatial interphase period arrives but Kirk is nowhere to be found. Spock believes the Tholian ship disrupted space when they so rudely interrupted and now he will have to calculate a new interphase period. The Tholian ship comes back and attacks the Enterprise. Spock fights back, hitting the Tholian ship with phaser fire.

The Enterprise's warp engines go out and the ship begins to drift. As a second Tholian ship arrives, it hooks up with the first ship and they begin to spin an energy web around the Enterprise. How is this possible in the vacuum of space?
7. Captain Kirk left a video message for Spock and McCoy to view upon his death. What message has the Captain left for them?

Answer: They should work together and support one another.

McCoy is just nagging the heck out of Spock for seemingly dooming the Enterprise. Instead of accepting the loss of Captain Kirk and getting the heck out of there, Spock chose to stay and now the ship is crippled and will be destroyed when the Tholian's complete their web. Spock reluctantly holds a memorial service for Kirk in front of the senior staff and some apparently random other crew members. McCoy drags Spock over to Kirk's quarters so they can view his final orders. On the tape, Kirk encourages the two to work together for the good of the Enterprise and McCoy feels bad for ragging on Spock.
8. After Kirk is declared dead, who is the first crew member to see the Captain alive?

Answer: Uhura

More and more crew members are going nuts and attacking one another. While in her quarters, Uhura sees an apparition of Captain Kirk in a mirror. She freaks out and everyone thinks she's gone crazy as well. No one believes she really saw the Captain. Scotty then sees Kirk appear in engineering and Spock is now hopeful the Captain can still be retrieved at the next interphase. Meanwhile, McCoy has come up with an antidote for all the craziness the crew has been experiencing.
9. Dr. McCoy develops an antidote to the effects of the unstable area of space which is a Theragen derivative. What is Theragen?

Answer: A Klingon nerve gas compound

McCoy has determined the space around them is having an effect on the brain and nervous system, causing the crew to have outbursts of rage. His solution was to create a Thergan derivative, a diluted version of a Klingon nerve gas that can be swallowed orally.

It will dull the area of the brain that is experiencing rage. Scotty wants to mix it with scotch and Spock is skeptical. McCoy convinces Spock to drink it as "the human thing to do".
10. When Kirk asks Spock and McCoy how they handled his final orders, what is their reply?

Answer: They never had a chance to view his final orders.

With the Tholian's web nearly complete, Kirk appears on the view screen at the next interphase period. Scotty musters up as much power as he can and they lock onto Kirk with the transporter. The ship is thrown clear of the web and they get Kirk back safely.

When Kirk presses Spock and McCoy for details about how they dealt with his final orders, they both pretend to know nothing about it. With all that was going on, they were too busy to view the orders.
