Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'SE4, EP3: £100 Car Challenge.' Clarkson won due to his car costing how much?

Answer: £1

Each presenter was given £100 to purchase a road legal (as in taxed / MOT passed) vehicle which was then driven from London and Manchester and back for less than it takes for a train journey. Clarkson bought a Volvo 760 GLE, Hammond bought a Rover 416GTi and May bought an Audi 80 1.8E. When the scores were broken down, Clarkson was chosen as the winner as he bought his Volvo for only £1!
2. 'SE5, EP5: Cheap Porsche Challenge.' The first part of the challenge, apart from purchasing a Porsche, was driving from London to which seaside town?

Answer: Brighton

Each presenter was given £1500 to buy a cheap Porsche. Clarkson bought a 1983 928, Hammond bought a 1980 924 and May bought a 1984 944. The first part of the challenge was for each presenter to drive their car from London to Brighton where fuel economy was also judged for the journey. Clarkson was eventually considered the winner when he sold his car for more money by selling it for parts.
3. 'SE7, EP4: Italian mid-engined super-cars for less than a second-hand Mondeo Challenge.' Did any of the presenters complete all challenges set?

Answer: No

Each presenter was given £10,000 to buy a 1970s mid-engined, Italian supercar. Clarkson bought a Maserati Merak, Hammond bought a Ferrari 308 GT4 (which Clarkson continuously called a Fiat) and May bought a Lamborghini Urraco, which was always running out of electricity among various other problems.

The presenters were given a number of challenges, including driving from Chippenham to a gentleman's club in Slough on limited fuel. In the end, no-one made it as Clarkson's engine disintegrated, Hammond's electrics failed and May ran out of petrol on arrival in Slough.
4. 'SE8, EP8: White Van Man Challenge.' Which of the following was NOT one of the tests the presenters faced?

Answer: Lap time of the test track

Each of the presenters was given £1000 to buy a van and face challenges after their original van review, where they were roadies for the Who, was deemed not good enough by the producers. Knowing little about vans, Clarkson bought a Ford Transit, Hammond bought a Suzuki Super Carry and May bought an LDV Convoy box van. Tests included a drag race, tailgating a passenger car and outrunning a police car on the test track. Hammond was the eventual winner despite crashing his van during the police chase.
5. 'SE9, EP3: US Special - Used American car for $1000 Challenge.' Between which two cities did the presenters journey occur?

Answer: Miami to New Orleans

Each presenter was given £1000 to purchase an American car to drive between Miami, Florida and New Orleans, Louisiana where they would then sell their cars. Clarkson bought a Chevrelot Camaro, Hammond bought a Dodge Ram pick-up and May bought a Cadillac Brougham.

There were a series of challenges, including the introduction of The Stig's 'American Cousin'. On arrival in New Orleans, the presenters chose to give their cars away instead of selling them after witnessing the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
6. 'SE10, EP4: Botswana Special.' Which car was chosen by Clarkson as the winner?

Answer: Volkswagen Beetle

Each presenter was given £1500 to purchase a two-wheel drive, non off-road vehicle to drive from the eastern border of Zimbabwe to the western border of Namibia. The challenge included driving across the Makgadikgadi Pan and also the Okavango Delta. In a new twist, any presenter whose car had failed would have to take over a new vehicle, for this challenge a Volkswagen Beetle. Clarkson had bought the Lancia, May the Mercedes and Hammond an Opel, which he later christened 'Oliver'.

At the end of the challenge, Clarkson chose the Volkswagen as the Beetle as the winner as it was the only car which had travelled the entire 1000 miles with no problems.
7. 'SE10, EP7: British Leyland did make some good cars after all'. How much were each presenter given to purchase a British Leyland?

Answer: £1200

Hammond was very upset when each presenter was given £1200 of their own money to purchase a car produced by British Leyland. Clarkson bought a Rover SD1, Hammond bought a Dolomite Sprint and May an Austin Princess. Challenges included numerous tests at the MIRA testing grounds, in which the cars pretty much failed everything, including being beaten around the track by The Stig driving a Datsun 180B. May eventually won the challenge with his Princess with Clarkson saying the rest of them were rubbish.
8. 'SE11, EP1: Make a police car for a lot less money than the real police spend on their cars.' In what livery did Clarkson paint his Fiat Coupe?

Answer: Italian Police

Each presenter was given £1000 to purchase a car and turn them into police cars that would match the standard of current police-issue Vauxhall Astra diesels. Clarkson bought a 1998 Fiat Coupe Turbo and painted it in the colours of the Italian Polizia di Stato. May bought a 1994 Lexus LS400, with 'Rozzers' painted on the front, while Hammond bought a 1994 Suzuki Vitara. Eventually there was no real winner of this challenge as the presenters failed most of the challenges dismally.
9. 'SE11, EP3: Can you buy an Alfa Romeo for £1000 or less without it completely ruining your life all the time?' Who bought an Alfa Romeo convertible?

Answer: Hammond

Each presenter was given £1000 to purchase a second hand Alfa. According to Top Gear, 'no-one is a true petrol head until they have owned an Alfa Romeo.' Clarkson bought an Alfa Romeo 75 (for £450), Hammond a convertible Alfa Romeo Spider (for £1000) and May an Alfa Romeo GTV (for £995).

The cars were put through a series of tests, through which Hammond's car almost completely failed as a water pump failure required him to manually pump water into the engine. Meanwhile Clarkson suffered gearbox problems and eventually required a tow from May.

The final challenge was a Concourse event, where May scored a respectable 74 out of 150, Jeremy 23.5 while Hammond scored 9.
10. 'SE12, EP1: How much lorry do you get for £5000 challenge'. Which presenter drove their truck through a brick wall?

Answer: Clarkson

For under £5000 and knowing little about trucks, May bought a Scania P49D, Hammond bought an ERF and Clarkson a Renault Magnum. The first challenge was to attempt a powerslide, where the producers were introduced to the Stig's lorry-driving cousin (with tanned arm on his racesuit of course!) After a variety of challenges, the three presenters then had to drive through an obstacle at 56mph. Hammond drove through a mobile home while May drove through a bunch of water coolers. Clarkson agreed to drive through a brick wall which left him with some minor injuries.
11. 'SE14, EP6: Bolivia Special.' Driving from Bolivia to Chile, where did the presenters 1000 mile journey NOT take them?

Answer: Santiago

The presenters started their route in the Amazon jungle in Bolivia. Here they had their three cars ferried in - a Range Rover, Suzuki SJ413 and a Toyota Land Cruiser. After getting their cars off a raft, the trio had to cut their way through the rainforest. Eventually they made their way out of the forest and onto the Yungas Road, also known as the 'Death Road', as it's regarded as one of the most dangerous passages in the world.

A stop in La Paz followed, where two of the cars were heavily modified, before the three tried crossing the Altiplano.

After reaching 17,200 feet, the trio had to turn back due to altitude sickness. In the end, only May and Clarkson ended their journey on the Pacific coast as Hammond's Land Cruiser crashed heavily on a sand dune.
12. 'SE15, EP2: A track day car which is as good in the real world.' In which country were all challenges set?

Answer: Germany

The three presenters were given £5000 to buy a 4-door saloon car that could be considered good enough to race on a track. Clarkson bought a Ford Sierra Cosworth, Hammond bought a BMW M3 and May bought a Mercedes-Benz 190E Cosworth, which May claimed Martin Brundle once said was the best chassis in the world.

The presenters met in Berlin, Germany with their cars where they were set a series of challenges, including a top speed test on the autobahn, an ADAC test (similar to UK MOT) during which Hammond's car fails miserably and a lap of the Lausitzring circuit. Once all challenges were completed, May's car was chosen as the winner as his was the cheapest when bought (only £2990).
13. 'SE15, EP6: British Sports Car challenge.' Who bought a TVR S2?

Answer: May

The trio were out to prove that Britain did build good sports cars and that hot hatches are no better. Clarkson bought a Jensen-Healey, May bought a TVR S2 and Hammond bought a Lotus Elan. The trio would then drive from their meeting point, the Lotus factory in Norfolk, across the middle of Britain to the old TVR factory in Blackpool.

The producers set a bunch of challenges along the way. In the end, there was no winner as the trio decided they were all winners. Clarkson noted that they view the cars with 'rose-tinted glasses' and that the three cars were 'diamond dogs'.
14. 'Middle East special.' From which country did the trio start their journey to Bethlehem?

Answer: Iraq

The trio were given £3500 to purchase used two-seater convertibles and trays from Iraqi Kurdistan to Bethlehem, re-enacting the journey of the Three Wise Men. Clarkson bought a Mazda MX-5, Richard a Fiat Barchetta and May bought a BMW Z3. On a somewhat perilous journey, the trio were not allowed to enter Iran, so had to detour through southern Turkey which at the time was considered a war zone.

The trio then try to sneak through Syria, as Israel may deny entry because of their visit to Syria. They find out Top Gear is incredibly popular in Syria so find sneaking through impossible! May is briefly hospitalised after a nasty fall while trying to haul a car. Eventually the trio make it into Jordan and the Sea of Galilee where Clarkson is convinced he is a miracle worker. Finally they make it to Bethlehem, where the trio have presents for the baby which is revealed to be a baby Stig.
15. 'India Special.' As usual, there was a back-up car in the event of a car breaking down. What was the back-up car for this challenge?

Answer: Austin Allegro

The three presenters were given £7000 to buy a classic British car to use in India. Clarkson bought a 1995 Jaguar XJS, Hammond bought a Mini Cooper and May bought a 1975 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. Challenges included being a dabbawala in Mumbai, a hill-climb challenge on the outskirts of Jaipur and finally a trade fair in Delhi, all of which fail miserably.

However, the three cars bought proved to be incredibly reliable and the back-up Austin Allegro was barely mentioned. In the end, there is no winner, and instead the cars are left on three plinths high in the Himalayas.
