Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hitomi Kanzaki seemed to be just a regular high school student in the first episode, "Fateful Confession". Which of the following was NOT true about Hitomi?

Answer: She had a crush on foreign exchange student, Allen.

Hitomi had the crush on Amano, an upper classman and track star. Yukari was not only her best friend but also the track manager. She gave Hitomi the troubling news that Amano was going abroad. Hitomi was popular as a fortune reader and was considered pretty good.

She also had an unusual pendant, a gift from her grandmother. When swung, it would perfectly keep time, swaying with full seconds. Later, she asked Amano to time her running, using the pendant as a stop watch. She asked Amano to be her first kiss if she could go one hundred meters in thirteen seconds.
2. As Hitomi was sprinting down the track, she and her friends saw Van enter her world. Who was chasing Van to do battle with him?

Answer: A dragon

Hitomi initially ran into Van, as this was identical to a vision she had earlier. She assumed this too was only a vision. Amano, Yukari, and Hitomi raced to escape the dragon, but Hitomi was instrumental in warning Van with a vision of the dragon striking with its tail. Van was victorious, taking the dragon's heart, but he took all the credit.

Intriguingly Hitomi was the only one who could understand Van. A sudden pillar of light took Van and Hitomi into space with Amano only able to give back her pendant.
3. After Van and Hitomi arrived in the strange new world called Gaea in the second episode, "The Girl from the Mystic Moon", what country did Van accompany Hitomi to?

Answer: Fanelia

Van's full name was Van Slanzar de Fanel as he is the prince and heir to the throne of Fanelia. His trial with the dragon was the last rite he needed to accomplish before completely ascending to take his rightful place. He presented the dragon's heart which had hardened into a jewel, called an energist. Hitomi had arrived in time to see Van's coronation.

She also witnessed him being trained by Balgus in his swordsmanship.
4. Hitomi was warmly welcomed by most everyone around her, but one. Which catty character took an instant dislike to her and rummaged through her belongings?

Answer: Merle

Merle, the cat person, was obviously devoted to Van, who she called Van-sama in the original Japanese. 'Sama' is a suffix title given to those one honors such as a member of royalty. Merle's dislike seemed to be rooted in jealousy of Hitomi who got some attention as the girl from the Mystic Moon, as they called Earth.

She stole Hitomi's pendant but gave it back to her when they ran into Van.
5. Van's coronation as king was interrupted by an attack conducted by mysterious soldiers from Zaibach. Who was the leader of this attack?

Answer: Dilandau

This group would come to be known as the dragon slayers (Ryuugekitai in Japanese). With invisibility cloaks, the attack was completely unexpected and the people completely caught off guard. Their only visible appendage was a retractable metal claw which caused horrific damage. The women and children evacuated the city, having to pull Merle along.
6. To defend the attackers, which guymelef did Van call upon to use?

Answer: Escaflowne

Escaflowne was the guymelef, a huge mechanical warrior suit, of the kings of Fanelia. Only a member of that house could pilot Escaflowne. Utilizing the dragon energist, which powered the suit, Van entered into a blood pact with Escaflowne. This suit was later called an Ispano guymelef which was created by the mysterious Ispano clan. Even with Escaflowne, Van was unable to save Fanelia and his tutor, Balgus. Hitomi's ability to view the future did rescue Van from the invisible enemies.
7. Another beam of light removed Van and Hitomi from the battle but were separated for the beginning of episode three, "The Gallant Swordsman". Hitomi was then nearly assaulted in the forest (or so it seemed) by the mole man. Who rescued Hitomi?

Answer: Allen

Allen, the stunningly handsome knight of Asturia, rushed to Hitomi's aid accompanied by his owl. His resemblance to Amano threw Hitomi into confusion. However, Van arrived, believing Allen to be her attacker as he had heard Hitomi scream. The two fought with Allen being the more accomplished of the pair. He derided Van for the same mistakes that Balgus had pointed out in Fanelia.
8. Van and Hitomi were taken to an Asturian outpost which was then visited by Zaibach soldiers. Who did Allen say Hitomi was?

Answer: His lover

Allen challenged that Zaibach might have been involved in Fanelia's attack, but Dilandau suggested that dragons might be responsible. Van's anger at the response drew attention to Hitomi and her odd clothes. Allen was forced to spring into action and give her a cover story and a kiss. Hitomi had seen visions of an angel and wondered if Allen was the angel.
9. The mole man helped Van and Hitomi to escape and get to Van's guymelef. What did he bring Hitomi to apologize for his earlier actions?

Answer: Her bag

The mole man had already dug a tunnel below the castle from an earlier run in with Allen and the gang. He admitted to being a poor thief and only wanted to steal Hitomi's pendant. He claimed his actions were misconstrued and he was not a pervert.
10. Who challenged Van to a fight in their guymelefs?

Answer: Allen

Allen humbled Van by showing that he lacked aggression in a fight. He also revealed that Balgus had been his master as well. Despite his win, Allen was shocked to learn that he had received a blow from Van. Unfortunately the relatively friendly duel ended with a vision from Hitomi of another attack by the invisible enemies of Zaibach.
