Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The American television fantasy drama "Warrior Nun" was created by Simon Barry. On what was it based (or by what was it inspired)?

Answer: a series of comic books

Television's "Warrior Nun" was based on artist Ben Dunn's 1994 comic book series "Warrior Nun Areala". The comic books focused on Sister Shannon (the halo bearer who dies in the first episode of "Warrior Nun"). The television series focuses on Ava Silva, the young woman into whom the halo is implanted. Dunn was born in Taiwan but moved to Texas and Kentucky.

His attendance at a Catholic high school perhaps contributed to his fantasies about nuns.
2. What is unusual about the name of each episode in the first season of this television series?

Answer: citations to biblical verses

Where most TV series use a short title for each episode, "Warrior Nun" simply cites to chapter and verse of a book of the Bible. For example, Episode 1 is entitled "Psalms 46:5." The referenced biblical verse says, "God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early." This verse was apparently selected with reference to the principal theme of the episode.

While it is not necessary to find and read the verse to understand an episode, the viewing is enhanced by knowing what it says.

This is comparable to the Netflix 2021 mini-series "Midnight Mass" in which each episode was named for a book of the Bible.
3. Ava Silva, the Warrior Nun, is played by Alba Baptista. What is her nationality and native language?

Answer: Portuguese

Alba Baptista is a Portuguese actor with considerable experience in Portuguese television. "Warrior Nun" is the first production in which she speaks English. Her ancestry is Portuguese and Brazilian. In addition to Portuguese and English, Baptista speaks German, Spanish and French.
4. What is the name of the religious organisation to which the combat nuns belong?

Answer: The Order of the Cruciform Sword

Nineteen-year-old Ava Silva, a tetraplegic, awakens in a morgue, able to move because of a sacred artifact implanted in her back. The item is the halo of the Angel Adriel, given by him to the first Warrior Nun, Areala of Cordoba, during the First Crusade.

The halo confers supernatural powers on the succession of nuns who have received it. Sister Areala founded the Order of the Cruciform Sword to combat demons on Earth. In Episode 3, Father Vincent instructs Ava on the history of this order. The sisters of the OCS, without supernatural powers, study hand-to-hand combat and the use of weapons.

Their symbol is a silver cross made from the hilt of a sword.
5. Much of "Warrior Nun," especially Episodes 9 and 10, is set in and around Rome, Italy. Where was the series, including the Roman scenes, filmed?

Answer: in Andalusia, Spain

The culminating episodes of the first season are set in the Vatican but not filmed there. All of the scenes in "Warrior Nun" were shot in Spain: in Málaga, Sevilla, Marbella, Antequera, and several other Andalusian locations. The scenes of St. Michael's Orphanage were taken at La Térmica Cultural Center in Malaga.

The orphanage's exteriors were shot at Baroque Encarnación, a church. The headquarters of the Order of the Cruciform Sword were taken at The Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María La Mayor in Antequera.
6. What is the mysterious metal, from which Adriel's armour was supposedly made, used to make the weapons used by the Warrior Nun?

Answer: divinium

The OCS perpetuates the legend that the Angel Adriel descended from Heaven wearing armour made of divinium to rescue Areala of Cordoba. This metal is rare on Earth. The Warrior Nun can "phase" through many materials but not through divinium. Weapons made of divinium can kill demons; divinium can also kill the Warrior Nun.

For example, the bomb that killed Sister Shannon was filled with fragments of divinium. The OCS uses it to tip arrows and bullets. Dr Jillian Salvius' son Michael is kept alive by particulates of divinium.

She needs more to complete a portal through which she believes she can cure his rare blood disease. In Episode 9, a ring made of divinium alerts Francisco Cardinal Duretti to the Warrior Nun's presence in the Vatican.
7. Especially before they go into a battle in which their lives may be lost, the sisters of the order say something to each other which encourages and emboldens them. What is it that they say?

Answer: "In this life or the next"

The phrase used by the sisters -- "In this life or the next" -- sounds biblical but it is not. In the motion picture "Gladiator" (2000), the protagonist Maximus Decimus Meridius declares himself to be "father of a murdered son [and] husband of a murdered wife" and vows "I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next." The members of the nun's order believe so firmly in the righteousness of their cause that they expect either to prevail on earth or to be reunited by God in the afterlife.
8. Shotgun Mary is an important character in this series. What is her relationship to the monastic order in this programme?

Answer: a member but not a nun

Shotgun Mary's mother went to prison for killing her abusive husband. Mary was placed in Catholic orphanages and found her way to the Order of the Cruciform Sword (OCS). Mary is neither religious nor a nun but is a member of the OCS and intensely loyal to it.

Her reliance is often based less on hope and more on her shotguns. She is played brilliantly by Toya Turner, a Jamaican-American actress, trained in Shakespearean theatre.
9. Who or what are the Tarasks who/which show up periodically in "Warrior Nun"?

Answer: armoured demonic monsters

In addition to the wraiths which have the power to possess people and make them do bad things, Tarasks are a higher order of monsters. They have armour and can escape hell for short periods to work woe among the living. They are attracted to the energy of the Halo which is why one appears in Episode 1 looking for it. Ava is attacked one in Episode 2; Lilith is attacked by one in Episode 5. "Tarasques" existed in French legends from the Middle Ages.

They were dragons with a hard shell, lion's head, claws and a serpent's tail. According to one source, they exhaled poisonous breath.

The nexus, if any, between "tarasques" and "tarasks" is unknown.
10. In Episodes 9 and 10, what happens to Francisco Cardinal Duretti?

Answer: he is elected Pope

Cardinal Duretti is played by Portuguese actor Joaquim De Almeida. He is introduced as the Vatican official supervising the Warrior Sisters. The cardinal is very political and maneuvers himself into a position to be elected the next Pope by the College of Cardinals. The cardinal is brusque, devious and appears not to be motivated by human kindness.
