Answer: His father's death from falling down stairs

At the end of season 3 we were led to believe Ryan's father, Henry, has died from tripping over a tennis ball down the stairs in Ryan's house. But we then find out it was Ryan who tripped and dreamed it. In another crazy twist, Ryan's father does die in this episode, but from a car crash.

Answer: Both Wilfred and Drew

Wilfred manages to convince Ryan that he needs to come along, and Drew also gets invited at the last minute. It goes horribly wrong, with Drew falling into a ditch and overhearing Ryan tell Wilfred that Jenna and Ryan kissed. Back in town, Jenna and Drew break up, but Ryan realises Jenna no longer likes him either.

Not quite: Ryan offers Arturo $500,000, which is half of his inheritance. Ryan is also given a conditional inheritance from his father, while there are no conditions on Kristen's.

Answer: The experiment is actually on Ryan

Ryan experiences a strange series of events, reminiscent of the "Truman Show", it appears that everyone is dressing up to fool Ryan into thinking he's leading a particular fictional life. But he eventually wakes up, having been drugged by the doctor with an interrogation drug that is supposed to show the person their worst fears.

Answer: A jar of pennies

The jar of pennies seems to trouble Wilfred greatly! This episode also sees the brief return of Amanda, who is a janitor in the preschool that Kristen is trying to get her son into (and fails due to Wilfred and Ryan's accidental sabotage).

Continuing to follow their bizarre set of rules, Wilfred and Ryan lose the endgame because of where Ryan parks his car at the beach! In an amusing nod to the change of actor, Wilfred tells Bruce he looks different (and he does, given he's now played by William Baldwin; Dwight Yoakam played Bruce in seasons 1-3).

Wilfred has always wanted to be a 3-legged dog, and spends much of the episode "Responsibility" being frustrated by how another 3-legged dog is being coddled. The car accident horrifies Jenna but pleases Wilfred immensely.

Ryan has kept the news of a lump on Wilfred's lung from Jenna as the vet seems sure it's not worrying. But it turns out Wilfred has lung cancer (or as Wilfred puts it, "breast cancer on his lung"). In a bitter-sweet moment, Jenna is very upset at the news and Ryan and her kiss, and then sleep together.

In what was an unexpected twist for many viewers, Wilfred does indeed die. We see the (much smaller) dog lying on a mattress in the vet's room as he passes away. A very touching and somewhat surprising scene in what was a much sillier show for the vast majority of episodes.

Answer: Ryan and Jenna officially start dating

In the opening scene, there is an interesting parallel to the very first episode, when Ryan starts preparing a suicide smoothie and saying goodbye to the 'girl next door'. He is saved by his mother at the door this time. Jenna ends up chasing Drew to Wisconsin to save their marriage, while Ryan is fine as he decides she isn't who he thought she was.

After deciding to let the hallucination of Wilfred disappear, Ryan gets lonely and brings him back. It is made clear to the viewer through flashbacks showing Wilfred as a real dog that the human in a dog suit was in Ryan's imagination all along.

The series, and the entire show, wraps up with Wilfred and Ryan sitting on a beach on a couch, with Wilfred digging up repressed memories from Ryan's brain.
