He got to his truck and realized he'd lost his beeper, so went back to the lakeshore. When the beeper started going off, he located it in the brush. Just as he picked it up, he was attacked and dragged into the lake.

Billboards leading up to the lake advertised Big Blue as "The Southern Serpent". It seemed that the lake's tourist business depended heavily on the perpetuation of the myth, and Mulder believed Big Blue was responsible for the multiple missing persons case.

The agents asked for directions to some cabins, and the shop owner offered to sell them a map for "2.50 plus Uncle Sam."

Answer: pants zipper

The man's body was pulled up by a fisherman, but his entire torso was missing. The man's fly was undone, and Scully told Mulder that "most drowning victims are found with high levels of alcohol in their blood and their flies unzipped. While urinating over the sides of boats, docks, or whatever, they lose their balance, fall in, and drown." Mulder pointed out that it didn't "explain why half of him is still missing." Scully suggested that fish could have eaten the body, noting that fish are known for eating decomposing matter. Mulder countered, "Are fish also known for eating half and saving half for later?" Scully had no good response to that!

Answer: making fake tracks

The next morning, Ted's hat was found on the ground by the giant tracks, and Mulder figured Ted had been attacked by Big Blue. Scully pointed out that a creature with feet big enough to create the prints would have been so big that the prints would have been deeper. Then Scully's dog, Queequeg, ran off and found the boot Ted had been using, revealing that the tracks had been a hoax.

Answer: a tooth

The picture was basically a big blurry white triangle against a black background, and Mulder proposed that it was a tooth. Though Scully agreed that the photos had been taken while Ansel was being attacked, she was skeptical that the picture was a tooth, pointing out the implausibility that a man who'd spent years trying to photograph the monster had managed to produce only a single blurry image of a tooth.

Answer: Here be monsters

Mulder quipped that he had a map of New York City with the same designations.

Answer: Ahab

Scully told Mulder that she'd named her dog Queequeg after the harpoonist in "Moby Dick" and recounted how her father had read the novel to her when she was growing up, and the two had had nicknames for each other from the book. Then she told Mulder that he was like Ahab, and the two launched into one of the many sublime exchanges of "X-Files" history:
Scully: "You're so consumed by your personal vengeance against life, whether it be its inherent cruelties or its mysteries, that everything takes on a warped significance to fit your megalomaniacal cosmology."
Mulder: "Scully, are you coming on to me?"
Scully: "It's just... the truth or a white whale: what difference does it make? I mean, both obsessions are impossible to capture and trying to do so will only leave you dead, along with everyone else you bring with you. You know, Mulder, you *are* Ahab."
Mulder: "You know, it's interesting you should say that, because I've always wanted a peg leg. It's a boyhood thing I never grew out of. I'm not being flippant; I've given this a lot of thought. I mean, if you have a peg leg or hooks for hands then maybe it's enough to simply keep on living. You know, bravely facing life with your disability. But without these things you're actually meant to make something of your life, achieve something, earn a raise, wear a necktie. So if anything I'm actually the antithesis of Ahab, because if I did have a peg leg I'd quite possibly be more happy and more content not to be chasing after these creatures of the unknown."
Scully: "And that's not flippant?"
Mulder: "No, flippant is my favorite line from "Moby Dick". 'Hell is an idea first born on an undigested apple dumpling.'"

Answer: alligator

After Dr. Farraday was attacked, Mulder went into the woods alone to look for the monster. He saw something coming up behind him and tried to run, but tripped on a log. Lying on the ground, he fired all his rounds in the direction of the approaching menace, successfully preventing any attack on himself.

When he calmed down a bit, he realized that it was simply an alligator, not a prehistoric lake creature.
